Hori USA posted on facebook yesterday that an announce is coming soon. Edge, hopefully.

I'm letting my Japanese order stand. Plan on getting a US 360 version and making it Seimitsu, if possible.

I thought a Hori rep already confirmed that over a month ago???

It's going to be the Fighting Edge no doubt.

People can forget about getting the Blue Diamond VLX in the US, though. That's an Amazon.jp exclusive and they'll have to import that joystick if they really want it.

P.S. -- I hope we can put a Seimitsu LS-32-01, -40-01, or -58-01 in the Fighting Edge.
The problem is that there have already been comparisons between that case and the old Astrocade Style HRAP 1/2/3 cab Hori's made for almost 10 years and the Fighting Edge case is roughly 2/3 to 3/4 the heighth of the Astrocade HRAP case.

Ouch! Tight squeeze.

Since part of the Fighting Edge's thing is having all new Hori parts, I think it would be better to evaluate those first before we start thinking of how to gut it. ^^;

Hope so! Gotta make one Seimistsu. Definitely keeping one or two stock, though. Respect the work Hori is trying to do. Pics of the buttons look great, though. $200 is a nice price.

Have there been any impressions on the Hori parts in the Fighting Edge as compared to Sanwa parts?

Typically, Hori buttons feel pretty cheap and stiff.

I DEFINETLY plan on getting one of those new Hori Fighting Edge sticks. The Buttons/stick is a concern. Especially the buttons. Since the 360 verison has those horrible green/blue/red buttons that dont mix with the black/blue aesthetic. Hope they are easy to replace.

Everything else ? Im sold. The Levelup video SOlD Me on it. Able to save your button layout? The handles ala the TE Pro?

Want.

Working on a stick art for a custom we're raffling off at an upcoming regional. I feel like it needs something more but I can't tell what...

The plan is to have the case be a blue like Nightmare, with a yellow "racing stripe" where the start/select/home buttons will be.

Hi guys,

I'm looking at the Hori VX SA and it doesn't have the LS/DP/RS stick that the Madcatz models has.. Is this a big deal?
It depends do you play anything that requires an analog stick with an arcade controller? Most fighting games and shoot em ups and arcade games use digital directional controls so it's not really an issue.

I was thinking more about XBLA games and such.. I can't really think of anything that forces an analog input, but I just wanted to check it off.

Just be aware, even on sticks that have analog switches, there wont be any actual analog sensitivity, so games requiring analog sticks still could not be played ideally in that circumstance. For analog games I just use analog controllers.

The US Hori Store is now taking preorders for the Fighting Edge. $200, pay up front, get your stick starting 6/25.

Still torn on which version to get - it makes more sense to get the 360 version if you plan to dual mod, but I think the colored buttons on the 360 version break the stick's aesthetic style.

I think I'm going to sell my TE sticks and grab that fighting edge stick.

That the stick is named the hayabusa pretty much gives me no choice.

Wonder if Hori will be at EVO.

The colors are rather heavily on the left side with the only thing breaking up the yellow on the right side are the logos. Maybe having the racing stripes go down the art itself in an inverted manner can balance it out. The thing to avoid there is the artwork looking too busy however.

My HORI SCV stick is acting strange again. on the 1 player side. Down back, and Up back won't register at times. This happened before and I swap out the sanwa stick with a spare one I had. It was working fine for a few months, and now its doing it again. I got bad luck with HORI sticks. Going to dual mod my Dreamcast stick and get some pink buttons and balltop. Need to get a new VSHG as well. My baby took a beating over the years....

Silent Sanwa parts have a release date, but I'm not sure if it's public info so I won't say anything until I know it's been announced.

Also, I don't remember if I shared this. Recently when I went to Tokyo I dropped off a special gift to Capcom's Ayano-san and Ono-san. We worked with arthong to make some special versions of the Street Fighter X Tekken Arcade FightStick V.S.! Check out the gallery here:

i wish hori made some kind of stick with the casing of the old RAP's.
i still regret no getting a EX-SE when i could :(

I think there's a good chance. BTW I'm so hype for dat VF5S, I'm gonna be playing a lot for EVO!
You not going to the pre-launch party in LA? Going to be there repping the game as always. If not, I'll see you at EVO my dude. I'll be rocking my shades as always. Looking forward to your future projects my dude.

Hey guys, I got some questions!

So I've been playing a lot on my HRAP3 with sucky Hori buttons and I now have the money to order some buttons. I live in the Netherlands and was wondering at which shop I should order. There's this dutch shop, jwlam.nl, but that store has some insane delivery prices. Plus, they're going down the 1st of june. Delivery time isn't an issue, as long as it doesn't take months.

Second question: my friend has a HRAP V3-SA and I find his joystick to be much more.. precise? It seems to feel.. clickier. I don't how to describe this but it just feels better. I was under the impression that it's the same joystick as my HRAP3. I like it better than my joystick and I was wondering why.

Thanks! Arcade sticks are awesome.

Magypsy,

I know of two choices that have decent selection in Europe:
arcadeshop.de in Germany and GremlinSolutions.uk ....

I've dealt with Gremlin and they're good guys. Very friendly and helpful. Either Sanwa or Seimitsu is good. Most people get Sanwa because the buttons are more popular and match the Hori shades closer. Others prefer Seimitsu because Sanwa buttons have the tendency to prematurely fire --- they're that sensitive!

Seriously, either Sanwa OBSF-30 series or Seimitsu PS-14-G are good. I wouldn't recommend the Seimitsu PS-15's because they are very stiff (like pounding bricks to me) unless you change the microswitches out with Sanwa SW-68 microswitches... I've also heard negative stories about the screw-in Skeleton buttons, too. They seem to be a bit sticky/stiff.

I guess who you deal with may depend on the exchange rate... I understand the economy's probably worse in Europe right now and the recent French election has thrown things into more chaos.

Wow... Markman's Capcom friends have got to be happy/super impressed with that joystick! What an outstanding customization job!

That one's a keeper!

Pulled out my VX-SA (first edition) yesterday only to realise being in storage is apparently all it takes for the front to start peeling off. Anyone got a link to art template? And a means of printing something that'll stick and survive usage ... in Australia?

I read somewhere a few days ago that Fuudo won Evo last year with a stock Hori HRAP3. Is that true?

I saw that he was using a HRAP3 during the coverage last year, but I just assumed that he had swapped out the red Hori buttons with Sanwas of the same color.

If that's true, then it just goes to show that the arcade stick components don't make the player. Everyone talks about Hori's stock buttons as if they are complete ass.

I have a HRAP3 stock right now (been using it for 2-3 years), and I am waiting for the Sanwa buttons that I ordered last week to arrive. I want to swap them out because Sanwas do feel noticeably nicer to me, but I just thought that it was interesting to learn that the most recent Evo champion was using stock Hori parts.

Don't a lot of Japanese players just use whatever sticks they can borrow when competing internationally because it's a pain to travel with their own sticks?

There's variation in quality of Hori's generic parts depending on the product - the ones in HRAPs (as opposed to the ones in the HRAP-like licensed sticks in the PS2 era) tend to be a bit higher quality. But most people I know swap them out mostly because they tend to not be as durable as the name brands.

I want to see someone win Evo with a stock Namco PS1 stick. Those are my favorite Hori clone parts ever.

That got me thinking, are there any other stories of somebody winning a major tournament with an old/crappy/weird arcade stick?

Tournaments are typically crowded with custom Hori's and Madcatz TE sticks, but are there any top players out there rocking some cheap-o or outdated stick?

Magypsy,

I've bought stuff from arcadeshop.de before and even referred a friend of mine to it.
great service and they were also fast with their shipping. I'm from the Netherlands so ordering from Germany was a bit easier and cheaper.

I'm going to buy from them again, once I know what parts I want for my stick.

I'm still waiting on my Sanwa buttons to swap in for my Hori ones on my HRAP3, and I wondering whether or not I should consider ordering an octo-gate as well.

Do they really make a big difference? I never play charge characters in pretty much any fighting game, so I'm always doing QCF and QCFx2 motions. The most common execution error that I run into with my current setup (square gate) is that I get Shoryuken motions to come out when I'm hurriedly trying to do QCFx2 motions for Ultras and the like.

I think I've stated my opinion on octo gates before, but some facts:

  • Octagonal restrictors were designed for some type of game other than fighters.
  • No arcade or retail stick meant for fighting game use comes with them.
  • Use of an octagonal restrictor will make some play motions intended by some fighting game designers physically impossible.
I don't know how the use of octagonal restrictors in fighting games came about, but I can only imagine it to be a problem looking for a solution. Honestly, I think if you are constantly riding the gate you're doing it wrong anyway and the restrictor is just a common scapegoat.

Hm... interesting feedback. Would you mind giving me an example of a motion that would be physically impossible with an octo-gate as opposed to a square one? I can't think of any situations in which that would be the case.

Google Image search actually led me straight back to this thread. Funny how that works out.

Personally, I feel that if you're riding the gate, you're doing it wrong. The art of using a stick is to develop enough control to just throw the lever enough to activate the switch, and press the button to pull off the special move. A rounded gate seems like a crutch, especially with fireball type motions. The shoryuken is the move that explains it perfectly, I find:

shoryuken.jpg

That last stop, the diagonal, is hard to achieve with anything but a square gate.

I actually tried an octo gate on my Tatsunoko VS Capcom stick, after using it for weeks with a stock LS-32, and I felt constricted in my motions. "To each his own" definitely applies here though, and you can probably kick my ass at KOF, so don't think I'm trying to be preachy here. The important part here is that you made your arcade stick your own.

I dunno. Most of the American arcade machines that I grew up on definitely octagonal restrictor plates. Because of that, I never pictured the dragon punch motion to be drawing a perfect Z like that in my mind. I just picture F, D, DF, which is basically Forward followed by a QCF.

Sounds like it's just a matter of preference then. The only problem that I've ever had with my square gate is double QCF motions coming out as Shoryukens, which never occurred on American machines for me. I guess the only way that I'll ever know whether or not it's for me would be to try it.

That last stop, the diagonal, is hard to achieve with anything but a square gate.

I usually modify the actuator on my sticks to be thicker, so I wouldn't say it's difficult at all. You can hit both down-forward and down-back while riding the lowest part of the gate (parallel to the player's body). It also guides fireball motions easily.

I would actually recommend beginners starting with octo-gates, and moving to square later.

The fact that gates are very easily switched out should allow everyone to come up with a preference.

So then how do I do it right? I've been struggling to learn stick for over a year now and constantly find myself getting frustrated and just stop playing altogether. I've got two sticks, one with an octo-gate and one without.

I kinda disagree. Beginners should start with square, then maybe change if they feel the need to. I say square because I think it's easier to block-- either back or down-back. An octo-gate would be a little different, but I suppose it's all preference. This is coming from someone who cannot block for shit on a pad using the analog stick. :(

For those of you who have a Hori VLX Pro and modded the artwork, how hard is it to do? I'm thinking about going with a yellow theme for mine.

Yeah, still too busy for me. But it's hella rare to actually see a licensed stick where they took the effort to make things like the secondary buttons, dustcovers, turbo switches, and edging all actually fit into the color scheme with the licensed art. So kudos to Hori for that. Not half bad.

I don't know if it applies to modern Madcatz sticks but as the warranty has long gone on mine and it wasn't working anyway I pulled it apart to see if there was anything that could be done.

Some shitty soldering work in there.

Can replacement PCBs be bought or will I have to look for a control pad to butcher?

No, if you need to replace the PCB, you'll have to either use something like Toodles' Cthulhu (PS3) or harvest a PCB from a pad (MadCatz's fightpads work great for this, and the WWE ones are cheap) if you want a 360 stick.
