I have to say I disagree with that, I think the 2017 Las Vegas shooting is by far the most significant since 9/11 and completely dwarfs the Capitol. 60 dead and 411 wounded.

Horrific incident, definitely. Didn’t alter the landscape of the country though. Prompted legislation against a specific type of bump stocks. But binary triggers and other alternatives still exist for faux full-auto.
The Pulse nightclub massacre didn’t reshape the country either. Or the Boston bombing. Or El Paso.
The attack on the Capitol has prompted over 100 arrests for domestic terrorism, a nationwide FBI domestic terror investigation, a major social media platform has been permanently nuked, the POTUS has been impeached and silenced from social media, three Cabinet members resigned, and the shockwave will continue expanding. Glenn Greenwald has expressed concerns that this will prompt a second War on Terror that erodes freedoms, similar to the post-9/11 world.

I was in Vegas a week before that for a work conference. I will tell you, after that event I vowed to never go to public concerts again. The shooter had a room booked for Lolapalooza in Chicago and just never showed up. Very scary.

I was in the middle of my work shift while all this was going down. Mexico always runs American news before their own and my wife told me what was going on. Took one look at the motive, the act, and live coverage and called it domestic terrorism. I figured that many don't like hearing that and they think they were "freedom warriors" but it was it was pretty close on par to any terrorist act the U.S. has experienced. I don't even go into the politics about it. I just take things at face value without bias. Glad the mods can see that it's something the community shouldn't be defending.

The footage I saw was mostly people walking around nonchalantly unchallenged posing for selfies and grabbing "souvenirs". Seems like security was completely inadequate. So when AOC goes on TV to say she feared for her life, it kinda hard not to read it as hyperbole. The shock of the capitol attack was more like "why is nobody stopping these people, it's the capitol for fuck's sake". When you compare it to footage of the "summer of love", that was shocking in a completely different way. Sections of cities taken over, public roads blocked, people dragged out of their cars and beaten to death, people executed at point blank range, chaos, destruction, looting all around with buildings burning everywhere, it was like scenes from a post-apocalyptic movie. Meanwhile both the democrats, woke celebrities and the mainstream media were all cheering it on and encouraging more. Trump is definitely responsible for inciting the capitol attack, but the people I just mentioned are equally responsible for inciting this past summer's attacks which were far more deadly and destructive.

How confident are you that the footage you are consuming isn't influenced by a selection bias, either self generated, or generated by others or an internet algorithm designed for emotional engagement?
Yes, in the capitol there was footage of people mostly milling about, but there's also footage of trespassing on restricted land, theft, and murder.
Yes, in the summer riots there is footage of hostile takeovers, theft, vandalism, and murder, but there is also footage of people speaking their mind without violence and just holding up signs and shouting.
Are you getting complete pictures of both scenarios via the pathways in which you consume information, or can they be flawed too?
The overall point I'm trying to make is that you can see these events through the lens of overall damage numbers or deaths, or implications. There's many ways to analyze this. Yes, the summer riots have a higher body count and more monetary damage, but that's because there was more of them. By contrast, the capitol incident was an attack on the fundamental institutions that are the bedrock of our entire country, both in law and in physical space.
If an attack like that was able to fester as much as a whole summer, what would you make of the comparison then?

I agree with your analysis, but one of my biggest complaints is that what happened in the summer was not tamped down quickly and effectively enough that it actually helped encourage what we saw on Jan 6. It’s like the kid who sees a sibling get away with things and then says well I’m going to start doing that too and amplifies the bad behavior. I think it’s a huge mistake not to see that connection as it’s a very real human condition.

Personal responsibility should always be a thing. The line is crossed though when you start destroying innocent people’s property and killing other human beings. The government would not let the cops effectively protect their cities and themselves. People saw that and learned from it.
Do you have kids? If so, I’m pretty sure you tamp down certain unacceptable behavior before it gets out of hand. Why? Because not doing so leads to more bad behavior and encourages their siblings.
As for the Capitol rioters, I said at the time this was a huge mistake. They endangered lives, killed an innocent man, and are going to lead to huge government overreach. They deserve to rot in prison and have no sympathy from me. My only issue is the hypocrites who are only now outraged. They should have been outraged back in the summer. I hope they continue to be outraged by this behavior should more riots happen regardless of the cause. I hope they also tone down their rhetoric and stop encouraging people to act like animals.

I'm not downplaying it at all and I realized exactly what happened. Proper security (especially since they were warned in advance that some fanatics would probably try to storm the capitol) would have prevented this. Maybe the security forces they had were afraid to open fire on citizens and maybe some of them had doubts since during the whole summer the democrat politicians basically went on record to say that all cops are terrorists and should be defunded/disbanded. Obviously professional police officers should always do their duty though, even if it means protecting people that spit in their faces, so I don't condone law enforcement giving these terrorists a pass if any did. At the end of the day though Trump's presidency was only a thing because a lot of people were completely sick of wokeism and marxism taking over all facets of their lives. I seriously believe that if all these radical ideas weren't being pushed down our throats there's no chance Trump would've ever been elected. His election was like a big "fuck you!" to the establishment, that's all. All these radical politicians popping up in Western democracies only get support because arrogant mainstream politicians don't listen to what citizens want (which is the point of a democracy) and instead do what's best for them and their agenda, so some, in desperation turn to candidates who claim to hear their grievances.
