NeoGAF Drawing-a-Day Thread

The more I doodle the worse it seems to get :( or am I just being to harsh on myself? have not finished a single thing I like /didn't discard lately. Some real nice work in this thread.

Day 9:

DOKKAN DOKKAN TSUITERU
DOKKAN DOKKAN ASHITAMO
KOTAE WO MOU
TAMASHII WA
SHITTE RUNOSA

DRAAAAAGON SOOOOOUL!

Over two hours sunk in to this thus far. Photoshop CS5 on a Wacam intuos something or other. I want to finish the animation, at least, even if I never add any of the details.

Day 11:

Time: 45 minutes
Medium: Artrage 4 +wacom
Notes: Title: Chasm
There is a chance of escape...But what's the use? The guardians are around it, and the gates will close on you if you get to close...It's so beautiful though. Loved ones will be there...But we have to find another way...Some other way...

Try taking some time and learn basic stuff or taking smaller steps. You don't really need to make perfect masterpieces, I think any progress is good enough, you can always improve what you have the next day if you were not satisfied.

I think it's more important to try your best and make progress than making awesome artwork and posting them, best not to compare yourself to others.

Day 1: Playing around with my watercolors. I usually do landscapes so I tried my Guild Wars character.

Time: 30 mins

Came out ok-ish, I tried doing it without a sketch so some proportions are a bit off.

Worked on it for another hour or so earlier.

Day 10:

I've also been adding the "final" line art and throwing in some color, but I'll post that when it's done. I decided they should both be Super Saiyan and in their Android saga gear.

Finally got up the courage to sketch something.

I spent a really disproportionate amount of time on this.

Time: I dunno like 2 hours ughhh
Tools: GIMP + VisTablet PenPad (which is why it took 2 hours

Worked on it for another hour or so earlier.

This is fucking badass. Keep it up

Time: 59 mins
Medium: GIMP + Wacom
Notes: Our team at work uses Scrum to manage our tasks. This week I am assigned the position of "Scrum master" (basically the person who makes sure everyone is doing things). Growing up with a Welsh father, "scrum" means something completely different to me...

day 22, will continue figure drawing tomorrow (or when I have more time), I've still been doing the gesture stuff but when I have to come up with something of my own, I just can't visualize anything, so took a break.

Wow nicely done! It really does like a real painting from a canvas, what was your canvas settings out of curiosity?

Sorry about the late reply. Basically I just start my paintings with a default non-textured surface, I feel it makes it easier for me to get things down the way I like. When I am done I choose a canvas texture to use. For this one I used - Essential Canvas with around 50% grain size. I mess around with alot of different Canvas types though.

Have you tried Artrage? If so, what do you think of it?

Also another dog painting. My brother's German Shepard as a Mall cop:

Another Livechamber doodle focusing on a Campaign element: pets!

Think Mordecai's Bloodwing out of Borderlands mixed with Castle Crasher's Animal Orbs mixed with the Engineers from Halo 3: ODST. Pets are "superbabies" you can find in dungeons guarded by platoons. To clarify on how these things would work in combat, there's a quintessential substance called Aether that's a bit of a mix of the fountain of youth + phazon that exists in the dyson sphere that's rapidly accelerated the local races, cultures, and technology. Cats, being the highest possible state of reincarnation in some religions, become a Soul pet, functioning as Metal Slimes (rare and high HP but very rewarding). Horus (top-left) has some sort of Mind Eagle. Vita's using a Sceraphid larva, whose hardy exoskeletons mean they can be used as melee weapons. The little bottom-middle dude is an attempt at an Aether elemental pet.

There are two things you can do upon encountering a pet: kill the pet itself to stop it from juicing up the platoon guarding it, or go in for the long haul and kill the amped-up platoon, at which point the lone pet will befriend you. You can go up to a pet and pick it up using the Action button, at which point you can select one of four bonuses available with the DPad. Once you've chosen one of the four bonuses, the pet cannot perform any other bonuses, and will disappear/leave after being killed by enemies or if you die.

For example, a cat's bonuses are Soul Bomb (all of your grenades will begin to orbit around the floating cat and you can chuck it like a grenade for massive damage but at the expense of causing the cat to teleport away before detonation), Rapid Regen (rapidly restores shielding for you and your nearby teammates), Power Fist (Fisticuff attacks come out at twice normal speed), and Zero G (self-explanatory). You can also burp a Sceraphid larva to make it spit up some oily goo that'll leave a flammable trail on the floor, which can be good for traps.

Considering Bloods are purebred humans (and tend to be archers), I might make the Blood pet a cherub. No idea, though. Took about 45 minutes for both doodles combined, Wacom Bamboo, Photoshop CS5.

3/4 view and male face: two of my weakest points.

Some progress. I suppose...

Nice progress on the ear. They can be hard to nail, especially when drawing from memory.

Love the rendering, I wish I knew how to use PS, its brushes have something that I can't replicate with ArtRage

Thanks.

The best part about Photoshops' brushes is how predictable they are. There are also tons of brushes floating around on the internet, so finding something you like is easy. Unfortunately, Adobe hasn't nailed brush feel. It's hard to quantify, but versus a program like openCanvas, Photoshop brushes lack a certain element. Naturalism, maybe? When I put down a line in openCanvas, yeah, that's what I wanted. In Photoshop I find myself constantly erasing and redrawing lines. Adobe tried adding more advanced brush tools, but the lag is so bad I find them useless.

Might do more than one today to make up for lost time. This is Maestrom, the archer/swordsman class in Livechamber. He's the Bloodmind, meaning he uses synesthetic weaponry - notably his cello crossbow, currently called the Adagio. Maestrom's Natal Bonus (if you're holding a weapon that corresponds to your primary element, 2 weapons per element, you get a bonus for said weapon) allows him to ignore shielding, turning his normally precision weapon-esqe Adagio into a full-blown sniper weapon with proper aiming.

Heavy inspired by samurai and oni, of course. Doubles as Deejay's father. Has a Van Helsing-Dracula relationship with Soulbloods. Took like 45 minutes, usual material.

It's been a while guys. I was busy for much of the week so here are my latest subway drawing dumps including a self-portrait that I did that made me look much older than I actually look. I need to play catch up on these last two days:

About 25 minutes last Monday morning; black and blue pen. I wish I had more colors on hand because her bag was a rich mahogany red-brown:

About 10 minutes last Monday evening. Again, all these drawinngs are done with with a ball point pen. I've been taking advantage of using up two pages after seeing GAF member cb (?) use up two pages to make a sketch. It's been good:

There's a story behind why I drew this attractive woman in the "Most Clueless You've Ever Been To Sexual/Romantic Advances" thread. I'll be cross posting it there and provide a link to my post here even though it's slightly off-topic. About 40 minutes in total since I added the textures to her shirt and hair as well as blue ink to her shorts much later; also defined her boots. It looks exactly like her so I'm proud of this one (sans pink top):

Self-portrait of myself. It's supposed to be a reflection of myself on the subway door glass hence why certain things are backwards. It was my 25th birthday hence why the 19 is emphasized. I don't actually look that old but maybe I was simply tired. I was frowning because I was sad to depart from newly acquainted friends. I don't normally like drawing self-portraits but as a birthday present to myself, I thought why not? About 35-40 minutes in total:

Did this one quickly last Friday night in about 10 minutes plus 10-15 extra minutes to add in a few details and color in stuff. His pants and sneakers were actually white since he was dressed in a orderly/nurse's uniform:

I gotta order myself two more Moleskine sketch books soon since I'm running out of pages. Will post a few other stuff soon as well get some more digital drawings done when I stop procrastinating.

Nice progress on the ear. They can be hard to nail, especially when drawing from memory.

Thanks.

If you're looking for something that mimics traditional media you should look into ArtRage or Corel painter.

First drawing done following construction as much as possible. Beforehand, I used to follow angles, lines thickness, etc...

Took me way too much time (around 90 minutes). Eventually hunger snapped me out of it.
