NeoGAF Drawing-a-Day Thread

Done in around 45 minutes as part of a series of icons I'm working on.

Also on that previous post, I really love the guy with the tall head.

More figures done throughout the afternoon.

pencils, an hour

I was wondering where you both got the models from? Is this life drawing or is there some online resource, or something you pay for, or is it just random photos or the deviantart site linked a while back (it appears you need to be a member so I haven't checked it out yet). I'd really like to get back into drawing but I've tried googling and can't find anything decent for free.
I'd really appreciate any suggestions.

Going to try and start posting 2 a day to make up for the ~20 days I missed this past month.

Doodling more boss concepts. Took about 15 minutes on and off in OC. Each element has a special operations unit headed by a notable NPC based on a horror movie antagonist. Also, unrelated Sceraphid doodle.

About 10 minutes in CS5. Debating giving Isulven a more "approachable" helmet compared to the janky head thing he has going on now. I feel like I'm ripping off of a Destiny helmet but I can't figure out which one off the top of my head.

Medium: Photoshop CS6 with Bamboo.
Time: 100 minutes (I feel like that's a long time for a piece like this, is it?)
Notes: Still life, I'm happy with it for the most part but I couldn't get the right colours so I cheated and used the eye dropper on my reference for the base red and the shadow :(((

Nah, not really. Most still life pieces take much, much longer than that, especially if it's color. I myself spend anywhere from 3-9 hours depending on the subject and complexity.

Don't kick yourself for using the eye-dropper tool. Short of taking a photo and then tracing over it, "cheating" is a ridiculously oversimplified and overused term when it comes to art.

A friend is doing some homebrew beer.

He made one with toasted beans or something ... I made the "package" =D

I've been using posemaniacs but I'm going to try moving away from it to pictures of life models.

http://www.posemaniacs.com/?pagename=randompose <skinless 3d models so pretty safe for work

These two can have nude models but there are options for clothed or "decent" as well if you have people around I guess.

Yeah, Posemaniacs is good stuff. A coworker just showed it to me a few weeks ago and I've been doing it on my lunch break.

I feel like I'm too much a noob to be working on (90 second) "quick" figure studies. Maybe I should go back and start from contour drawings...

Thanks for linking the other 2 sites. Will check them out later!

I downloaded them from the net a long time ago, but unfortunately I don't have the urls anymore :(, sorry.

There are some good suggestions on this page though!

Day 36 - NSFW (Nudity)

Spent a few hours, ended up having to use reference for the proportion and lighting, it was becoming a pain in the ass without, I don't know why I keep getting the perspective wrong without using references :( Once I start shading and adding details it just all gets fucked up eventually.

I'm going to have to try making them more blocky at the beginning and keep the lines.

Day 13, took about half an hour, I think. I plan on using this as reference for a low-poly styled model, but I've never done any kind of 3d modelling before, so I see this going horribly.

Not really caring too much about the detail, as I figure I'd hammer those out in the textures. I want the face to be textured on as opposed to modeled, for that legit PSX/N64 feel. Small 128x128 textures on low-poly models give me a nostalgia stiffy.

I'm still debating whether or not to make the head smaller.

Pokemon XY metagame spoilers, if you're going dark. The picture itself doesn't really reveal much.

Fairy has been revealed as a new type, featuring a mix of new Pokemon created specifically for it and previous Pokemon retconned into having said type, such as Gardevoir. It's super-effective against Dragon. While that's great from a gameplay standpoint, it could result in some... weird discrepancies elsewhere.

Just doodling in OpenCanvas for like half an hour.

Double-dipping today to try and break even on days drawing versus days not drawing.

The top depicts the bread-and-butter Sceraphid "toaster pistol." They're dirt cheap to make and every soldier is issued one. Sceraphid have weird diets so they can use the pistol as both a flashlight and to fry up their food and get rid of any on-field bacteria that might have found its way into their rations. If you pull the pin, the weapon retracts and the heater casing ejects and it can double as a personal defense weapon. Picture getting hit by a belt sander as hot as an iron.

The bottom weapon's named Cinderella. The Sceraphid are low on resources, so before puberty, they shed their adolescent carapace and save it. Following puberty, known as The Brood (which mostly consists of them dwelling in a cocoon and occasionally coming out for food and physical examinations), they can take this adolescent carapace to their local arms tailor, where they'll convert it (cleaning up the shell and adding in necessary tech) into a rocket launcher. The heat exhaust has been re-wired to where the "mouth" of the gun is, so every time you shoot your gun breathes fire.

Medium: Pencil and paper.
Time: an hour and something, wasn't keeping track
Notes: Figure, ignore the hands and sorry about the quality, our scanner is just horrendously bad at it's job :(

Feels good to use a traditional medium, sketching is just more enjoyable, I wonder if one of those expensive screen tablets (dunno what they're called) can capture the same feel because my bamboo feels really stiff and unnatural.

If you need any more, check out these on Proko.com, I like them a lot and they're not very expensive considering the quality and the amount of poses you get.

Thanks for this, looks good!

No worries, thanks for replying. And yes, plenty to be getting on with :)

Does anyone know of any decent tutorials on doing concept art similar to the art found in the load screens of Crusader Kings II (by Paradox) and Civilization V (by Firaxis)?

Also I'm working on creating a top-down Rogue-like and would love to do "painterly" dungeon tiles and the like, colorful but painted looking. I'm not sure how to describe it, so frustrating -- I'll see if I find anything out there and hopefully will find a tutorial on how to achieve the effect. Basically not pixel art nor the tiles that look like a photo texture was put in it, if you know what I mean.

Cool thread, been following for a while but haven't felt like I had the time to participate till now. There's just something super appealing about in-progress/quick drawings compared to just looking at polished work.

Day 1 - 45 min

This is rapidly becoming two drawings every two days!

Yesterday I was on a team away day. It was boring as hell. Luckily, I had paper and biros.

Time: No idea
Medium: Biro + paper + terrible Xerox MFD scanner

And for today:

Time: 1 hr, 5 mins
Medium: GIMP + Wacom
Notes: I wanted to do more detail but I ran out of lunch break. Yes my head is a weird place.

I know I haven't exactly been keeping up with posting, but I have been keeping an eye on this thread and some of the progress in here is just awesome to see in general.

I finally finished something in the span of a day that hasn't made me want to cut my hands off/gauge my eyes out.

ibzqAjrWAbqMMx.jpg

It isn't anything special by any means but its the first thing I haven't deleted or torn to shreds for a few days now.

Tools: Moleskine sketchbook, Parker .05mm HB mech pencil
Time: About 3 hours in the span of 5 (I'm pretty sure 2 of those hours were me laying around hating life in general)
Notes: I should be a bit more forgiving to myself from time to time....maybe.

Love this thread idea. I will start with this. I've always been a traditional ink and pencil kind of guy, but since I got a Galaxy Note 2 I'm getting more into digital.

Pretty cool, I often use the same color for my sketches.

You should, the draw it's pretty charming and I really dig the liberty style

man I really should set some kind of direction for myself :( I waste a lot of time on random mindless stuff.

Im guessing arts & farts is dead.

I think arts and farts is kind of like the post your awesome stuff thread, while this is like the "neogaf daily sketchbook" thing, to keep track of everyone's progress :D

It kind of helps people that's trying to start getting into the habit of learning/practising, so I think it's great
