Elden Ring and second place Astro Bot.

For me, it's BG3 or KCD2.

They are (imo) both the best RPGs of all-time for their respective sub-genres (cRPG and WRPG).

BG3 is unbelievably good with its story, characters, and wonderfully creative combat system that has now introduced millions of new people to the world of D&D.

KCD2 has insane attention to detail and complexity with its mechanics and systems. It's the most life-like, realistic world I've ever played in that "feels alive". Unlike BG3, KCD2's overarching story and combat aren't really the highlights here, but the quests, side jobs and interactions with the people of the world are all interesting and engaging.

Both games are gorgeous with great VA work to boot.

Now that we're at the mid-gen point, it's tough to pick just one, but for me, Elden Ring stands out as the Game of the Generation so far.

I am not into soulslike and platformers....so easy choice for me. BG3. Not only because of the game itself, but also how Larian delivered it. 10/10 everywhere.

I got a lot more enjoyment out of Elden Ring than Astro Bot, BG3, and Halo Infinite, so that's where my vote goes.

I think the only other game released until this point this gen that I've enjoyed more than Elden Ring was Returnal.

I voted Elden Ring but that is a tough showdown. ER vs BG3 is like Vegeto vs Gogeta. TotK, Astro, Expedition 33, Metaphor all solid runners up.
Of these, Baldur's Gate 3. Probably going to be the last game with that amount of player choice before AI replaces the hard, manual human work that went into creating it.
One word. Owlcat. Also make sure to pick up that DOS2 DE when it drops if you haven't played it yet.

Everyone complaining about the list being trash - this is literally just every game GAF has selected as the winner in their GOTY voting process for the last four years.

I agree with BG3...but kcd2 did not do it for me. I bounced off KCD2 so hard. What was I missing? This game was closer to What Remains of Edith Finch than Skyrim. Calling it an WRPG does not really define this game well. It is its own genre. Medieval sim.

Also to everyone who thinks the list is trash, imagine if BG3 and Elden Ring came out the same year. That said....of course a list that didn't consider goty would be a better overall game list.

Elden Ring and it's not even close. It's my all-time #1. 700 hours played and I could start another playthrough today and enjoy it and probably find something new I haven't seen before.

It's one of those rare ones where the score has increased the more I play it. I didn't rate it 10/10 at the time, iirc I went with 9/10. Because I hated the final boss(es). Today it's the perfect 10.

People are at the contrarian phase because we got so many "souls-likes", but Elden Ring gets my vote. It's really a masterpiece of design, art, and gameplay options.

I'd argue the Switch is part of this generation of consoles. If we factor that in, my vote would go to Breath of The Wild. If not, Elden Ring would probably get my vote. Neither game is the wrong choice. Halo Infinite on the other hand has no business in this conversation.

I chose Halo Infinite. While it never reached the same level as Halo CE, 3, and Reach, it still kept me hooked for at least 1,000 hours. Astro Bot comes close. It's like choosing GoldenEye over Super Mario 64, but in a different generation.

Elden Ring gave me an adventure like no other game ever has. Sure it has some faults but no game is perfect, and imo the strong points sure compensate for it's weakest aspects.

Certainly there are better made games, but in between playing them all I still fire up Halo matchmaking as an instant fun palate cleanser especially firefight mode. Even though I never bothered to play past the first section of the campaign, even when I had Gamepass.

On an objective basis I'd pick something else, but subjectively for the stress relief/fun offered over the whole gen, I picked Halo.
