Pearl Jam was MY shit for a long time. Their best album is Yield. Hands down.
Agreed with whoever said In Utero is one of the best albums ever.

Oh, all this time pimping northerners I've never met, I forgot to pimp my friends' band, twothirtytwo. I don't usually call these things, but I have a sneaky suspicion these guys will blow the fuck up soon (and hopefully bring their ol pals Parachute for Gordo with them, since we play together all the time). Their live shows are utterly insane and I love them for it.

I used to go to school with the singer and he was always a bit mental. Once when we were about 18 we were at a relatively subdued party and somebody put One Armed Scissor on the stereo, prompting him to go absolutely bananas moshing around the room. He got so worked up that my friend's mum had to give him a hug to calm him down.

I tell this story only because now he does it on stage and people fucking love him for it. Funny how life goes. Check it -

Twothirtytwo - Patriot

I genuinely love this song.

Any body here a fan of this band?

Yeah man, totes (although I don't have that record, I've got Do Dallas and The Difference...), fantastic band, very much in the vein of the shouty brit-rock we've been talking about recently in here too. They are a rare band with a sense of hunour to match their obtuse musicality. Love the new stuff with Future of the Left as well. Falco is the fucking man.

Twas me!

Steve Albini recorded that album. He's a musical legend in his own right. His current band, Shellac, are incredible and offer a fine example of hard minimalist rock. Big Black, the band that made him famous, is arguably a gnarlier proposition.

How have we got through a Rock/Indie/Alt thread without mentioning the first couple of the genre: PJ "My Future Second Wife" Harvey and Nick "I wanna be you when I'm older" Cave?

Some other bits I'm listening to today which may be worth sharing:

Tom Waits - The Earth Died Screaming
Iggy Pop & The Stooges - Search & Destroy
Drive Like Jehu - Luau
Jeromes Dream - It's More Like a Message to You
Radiohead - Hunting Bears

I feel like I should give my music card back in when I say that I've never been able to get into PJ Harvey or Nick Cave beyond their more poppy stuff. Stories from the City... is a good record, but I think PJ harvey relies too much on two chord back and forth rhythms in her songs which gets a bit dull for me. And Nick Cave, I like some stuff but his catalogue is all over the place and some of the stuff I've heard is just really boring, but then some of his songs are utterly fantastic. Both of these artists, you could play me a great song and I'll be like "that's a great song" but fuck me if I can't get through a whole record by them.

Nah, you get a free pass because of the sheer awesome you exude :) I can understand that though. I feel the same about The Cure. Great pop songs, everything else is terrible (to me).

Nick Cave is willfully ecclectic musically. Where he shines though, is in his lyrics. You may like Grinderman, his latest 4 piece rock combo. They have two awesomely punchy albums out. With PJ Harvey, I'd suggest To Bring You My Love (no other album quite like it) or Rid of Me (so brutal). Both artists really REALLY shine live.

On a side not (if you have an hour to spare):

Acid Mothers Temple & The Cosmic Inferno - Pink Lady Lemonade ~ You're From Outer Space.

All you really need is a Cure greatest hits, that's just fine for me too :)

And yeah, Grinderman, I like about half of it which is par for the course with Cave and me it seems. Some of the tunes are flat out brilliant, and I like his sweeping romantic songs too. I think a lot of his stuff could do with being a couple of minutes shorter, he has a lot of 6 minute songs it seems. But I do respect the guy, his recent interview on Marc Maron's podcast was fascinating listening.

Same as PJ, I like some of her stuff (especially her work on the Desert Sessions record and her duets with Mark Lanegan, mind blowing) but just can't do her albums. I have Rid of Me for instance and it is literally the worst mastered record I've ever heard, so quiet and tinny! Albini is a mastermind but sometimes he's a right cock, turn it up you arty twat :p

Will check out that link later on when I get home. It better be good!

Hahaha! That's why I love him!

Weeeell... I like it. I've seen them a few times; one time I saw them, the main guy was playing both a guitar and a violin at the same time. That track is pretty repetative and very 60s psychedelic, so gird your aural loins. It helps if you have a few suspicious smelling cigarettes and a nice cup of mushroom tea.

Just sayin'.

So thanks to MusicFestNW happening, in the next five days I'm (hopefully) going to go see:

Lonnie Holley
Deerhunter
Minden
Royal Canoe
!!!
Animal Collective
Surfer Blood
Earth
Godspeed You! Black Emperor
The Moondoggies
Pickwick
Neko Case

I normally don't see a dozen bands live in a month, much less a weekend. I'm gonna feel old and exhausted. x_x

You should check out McLusky Do Dallas if you own their last album. I still think it's their best.

Describing and writing about Crystal Stilts is the most challenging thing ever, because they are the weirdest band ever to combine so many obscure shit in their music.

What a fantastic band.

I've been on an absolute Okkervil River kick all summer. Then to top off the summer I find out they are releasing a new album. I haven't heard much of it yet, but it seems much cleaner and refined than what they are normally are. I highly recommend them as a band if you are looking for a new one, they are one of the most consistently good bands out there in my mind. They have a dark-folksy rock thing going on, something that isn't too common (and if it is, please point me to similar bands!).

As far as albums go, I'd check out Black Sheep Boy, The Stage Names, and The Stand-Ins first. Then maybe move up to Don't Fall in Love With Everyone You See.

220px-Jag80hires.jpg

Black Sheep Boy is a dark concept album (like most of their albums but more so) based off the song of the same name by Tim Harden. It has a lot of slower songs (unlike the ones below).

Check out:
For Real
Black

220px-Thestagenames.jpg

The Stage Names is another concept album on the decay of hollywood and the corruption that surrounds showbiz. Was the first album of theirs I listened too and definitely made me fall in love on first listen.

Check out:
Our Life Is Not A Movie Or Maybe
John Allyn Smith Sails

220px-Okkervil_River_-_The_Stand_Ins_cover.jpg

The Stand-Ins is a continuation of The Stage Names.

Check out:

Bonus Songs:
Westfall

What's everybody's favorite Modest Mouse album?

I've thought about it, and while I'm loving This is a Long Drive and The Moon, this one is definitely still my favorite.

The Moon and Antarctica will always be my favorite because it was my introduction to them back in 2000. I'm not sure what took me so long to listen to them.

Does IndieGaf look down on Vampire Weekend?

Cause their fucking awesome and I'm seeing them tonight alongside Colin Meloy.

Thank you Folk Fest
I love them. One of my all time favorite bands and they are great live. Their new album was amazing, I really did not expect them to be able to surpass their first 2 but they definitely did.

If I can be indulged to write a little bit about my live show experiences this weekend....

Lonnie Holley/Deerhunter: wristband fuck-up, couldn't go.

Minden

Even in that blurry pic, there's no question which way their frontman dresses.
Poorly. Also to the left.
That was probably to their benefit, though, because they didn't leave all that much else to be interested in. The group played well and played cohesively, but they didn't appear to behave cohesively. They were all just kinda there, on stage, each of them exuding a different personality. Without strong music behind it, it just didn't click.

Royal Canoe

I managed to take a picture the one time they weren't using their half-dozen different keyboards. (Let alone electronic drums; don't usually see two bands with two drummers in one night.) And I actually managed to cut off members 5 and 6. Anyway- musically, they were actually pretty enjoyable; you could tell what was going on, people were enjoying it, and they were all nicely in sync. Nothing extraordinary, but still solid.

!!!

That is the best picture of Nic Offer you're going to get. Fuck Adam Levine, Offer has actual, vintage, Jagger moves. Not merely akin to, but actually of Mick. Once he started strutting his balls off, they had the audience. Definitely at a different level, definitely deserved the headline slot. My only complaint is that !!! has a pretty consistent energy to all of their songs, which means no chances to really change it up or give the audience a break. I don't know how it doesn't wear them down (I can see the band doing this well into their 50s) but I found it kinda tiring.

Tonight's plan is Dan Deacon/Animal Collective/Surfer Blood, with a bit of AgesandAges in all likelihood.

anyone here a fan of the Old 97's? they're an alternative country band from Texas. my personal favorite from them stems from their "Too Far To Care" album.

Old 97's - Salome

220px-Old_97s-Too_Far_To_Care.jpg

YES FUCKING SIR. RIGHT FUCKING HERE.

The Old 97's are my favorite band. I've been to see them more times than I can count since 2000. Ive met them on several occassions at various instores and at bars, and Murray Hammond leaned on my car once.

TFTC is my favorite album. And this is the best song on it!

This album has awesome guitar work and catchy choruses.

While not my favorite, it's definitely an amazing record. I actually prefer it to Good News. I'm a staunch fan/defender.

If we're posting pics, here's a pic off Off With Their Heads from the Friday of WTFest.

I'm all for posting pics. There's definitely something about rocking out in a little dive theater with a bunch of other fans, it's a bit above just listening to the album.

And on the subject of live music- anyone ever see/experience a technical breakdown at a show? Any good recoveries? I ask because I saw Surfer Blood last night and, after about a half hour, they lost power on half the stage. Drummer and one guitar were left to try and handle the crowd, it didn't seem to go that great. Not, like, a big rowdy fuss, but still.

I haven't heard much of their earlier stuff, but I absolutely love their latest album.

same for me, it's one of those groups I wasn't supposed to like but modern vampires of the city is really good, they just write great pop songs and the album is so varied, I think that ten years ago they would have huge sales. I still don't know what to make of their earlier albums, they are a bit too sunny for my tastes.

I've been listening to Speedy Ortiz quite a bit lately. Pavement-fans should definitely check out Major Arcana. I asked on FB if they weren't doing a Euro tour, and they're coming to Belgium in february, so yay.

This is a really good song

Ha, finally we got a thread like this. I have been toying with the idea of creating one but never got to it.

Well lately I've mostly been listening to some new releases from Cloud Control, CHVRCHES, Arctic Monkeys, Fuck Buttons and Factory Floor.

Got a gig to look forward to this month, Built To Spill is gracing Amsterdam with a visit.

Let me just drop my last.fm in here too. New music is always appreciated.

I know it's sort of a vague umbrella term, but I'm using it any way. Does any body here know of any good Post-Rock albums? Godspeed, Sigur Ros, Explosions in the Sky, etc.

Well think I have one for you. I remember a few years ago I started doing this thing where I would just go on the Sordo Music Database (R.I.P. Anyone remember Sordo?) and download a random album and try to listen to it all the way through even if it was terrible. One of the first ones I got though was this Do Make Say Think album called You, You're A History In Rust. I remember it blowing my mind upon first listen but I never really went back to it again after that. I should give it another listen. You should too.
