NeoGAF's Official Nintendo DS Collecting, Appreciation, and Nostalgia Thread

depends on the type of seal. some can be forged easily, especially later Capcom releases since they use a regular-looking looking shrink wrap. I think Order of Ecclesia was the same way too.

This is a picture below I took for the monthly haul thread back in January before I opened it. You can clearly see the seal, look kosher?

Edit:

Just took pics of the front and back of the cart:

I think you're good with that DQV.

They did a run of reprints and you can still get them now. So it's not out there to think you got a legit copy.

Looks pretty legit to me, don't think you need to worry about that one been a fake.

Man, nice haul. How is that tank game?

The tank game looks pretty fun from what i have seen when i looked up info, like a platform game but with loads of customization for your tank as you find new part. Lots of low budget fun, love the simple series of games.

Look what I won last night:

Pokemon Center Giratina DS Lite

The guy originally had it listed for $199.99 BIN. I sent him a PM, asking if he would take less, and he offered it to me for $149.99. I almost bought it, but something came up and I decided to just wait.

Fast forward to last week and he sends me a PM to let me know that he's starting it as an auction, so I might be able to get it cheaper. I added it to my watch list, but it had already gotten a few bids. So, last night, I went ahead and put in a max bid of $135. And then it ended for....$52.23. Whaaaaaaat?

Yeah, it sucks about the hinge being broken, but I still feel like I got a pretty great deal. It's not like I had planned on actually playing it anyway.

^nice pickup all things considered. Can it be repaired?

Doesn't look like it, at least from what I've found. I'll look at it more in-depth once I receive it, but it doesn't look good. I was thinking that there might be a small chance that I could somehow use a White DS Lite system as a donor, but I guess it will depend on where the hing is cracked.

Spent the afternoon and most of this evening re shuffling the shelving, all N64 stuff is now in the kitchen lol. Where the N64 stuff used to be is now home to my Wii games & GCCX DVDs. Leaving a whole shelf to place all my DS games on. Keeps them mostly all in one place i don't have enough room on one shelf to hold them all unless i double stack.

Looks so much better now i can also keep tabs on my 3DS stuff as well as i now have a bit of breathing room for (now lol) for expansion as & when new stuff comes out.

SAM_1366.JPG

Looks so tidy but i doubt it will stay like that for long.

SAM_1371a.JPG

All the DS game smaller boxed sets although i have some of the bigger ones on the lower shelves.

SAM_1373.JPG

Small selection hides under here.

SAM_1375.JPG

And finally all my non Japanese games live in this small stack, i don't have that many games in english.

On the off chance the someone else watches eBay auctions on systems like I do:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Nintendo-DS-Lite-Pokemon-Daisuki-Club-Giratina-Special-Edition-Crystal-White-/281780200075?hash=item419b68a28b

I am about 98.5% sure that this is a fake. I got all excited when I first saw it, but the more I looked at it, the more I became sure it was. The characters are too black, instead of grayish, and the Pokeballs in the name don't look right.

I am going to be so sad if I'm wrong. =(

There are 3rd party replacement shells for a lot of the limited edition DS console designs & colours, there's no way in hell that's real.

Yep, that's what tipped me off. I didn't even realize they had those until I started doing some research, but at least they did a semi-crappy job of copying them.

So I picked up Super Princess Peach CIB for $1.00 (always wanted to try this game) at a garage sale today. While the game does work, I noticed the contacts needed to be cleaned. I took the cart apart and cleaned the contacts but now the cart won't snap back together. Has anyone run in to this before, or have a solution to get it to stay together. If not, it still stays together in the DS.

To clean DS games I snap a toothpick in half, wet the tip, and use the blunt, soggy end to scrub the contacts clean. No need to take them apart.

Maybe you could use superglue or something similar?

Got Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box complete in box for $10 today. My local DiscReplay had a few other games I'd been looking for but I didn't buy them. They are surprisingly competent at pricing their games fairly. I might go back next weekend to pick up a couple more things.

The one I worked at closed down earlier this year and I miss it so much. Like you said, DS games are priced very fairly and our store's pricing system still used Gamestop's old prices for PS2, Xbox, and GC games. Those were good times.

so, as a ds collector, i always focused on titles with high priority (dictated by quality) first so i highlighted the ones i'd go for immediately. the rest you can always tackle later on.

Thanks for sharing the images. I really like how your collection is set out.

I just played some space bust a move on my original "phat" DS. Then I played some yoshis island in the gba slot. I played some Tetris DS this morning, which I just bought from a retro store last week. I'm glad this hardware still works even after like 10 years.

Yeah it's really something. I would have expected to at least replace the battery like I needed to do on my 1000 series PSP.

Hey DSGAF, hope you don't mind a question.
I owned (for a little more than one year) a Dark Brown DSi XL, which I recently sold because... Well, as odd as it may sound - since I've heard nothing but praise to the console - I kinda hated how bad and drab DS games looked on those massive screens. Also I wasn't that happy about the 'temporary burn-in' issue I've got pretty much instantly, even though the console was brand new when I purchased it.

That said, I'm now at a crossroads. I still want to buy another DS console, but I'm unsure which model I should go for: DS Lite or regular DSi?
- What I like about the Lite is the compact design and the screens (I know it's not the sturdiest console ever, but I'd use it at home anyway, so no problem), but I'm not sure if there's any color which is more desireable than others, in terms of durability... I've seen used white and silver DS Lite looking pretty nasty tbh.
- What I like about the DSi is the build quality of the system. The XL was great in that regard, and as far as I know, it should be the same with the regular model. Also, I bought a couple of DSi Ware games which I temporarly transferred to my 3DS, so with a DSi I could get them back. I'm still wary of those screens though... I know they are bigger than regular DS', so I wonder if DS games would end up looking just 'less bad', compared to the XL.

Suggestions?
Thanks in advance!

I the the build quality is more robust on the DSi. Lites have hinges that crack far too easily. I also prefer the matte finish on DSi to the glossy Lite, but that's a personal preference. As you mentioned, the screen on the DSi is a little bigger than the Lite, which will be a minus for you since it means the pixel density is slightly lower, but it's still nowhere near the XL situation.

Got my Ni no Kuni DS copy in the mail today. New copy for 1200 yen feels like stealing.

The packaging for this game is seriously incredible. Not my picture but just look at this:

And the book is soooo cool, makes me wish I had gotten that Wizard Edition of the PS3 version.

I'm really looking forward to diving into this game. The PS3 verison's battle system wasn't very good so this having a simpler Dragon Quest style turn based system seems much better to me.

Went home for Christmas, popped Super Robot Taisen into my DSi, and found out that both screens have turned considerably yellow.

A complete copy of Infinite Space is worth a bit now, huh?

I only ever bought 1 new game at retail for my DS, and that was it. It's opened now, though.

Yeah, that's one of those games that I now kick myself for not having gotten sooner. It's going to sting when I finally add it to my collection.

Indeed, it's getting quite an expensive one to find. The only problem is the fact that the save data can't be erased normally so if you get a used copy it's quite a problem.

There is a way to do it though, you need to have a USB save dongle you then you uploade a save from a totally different DS game into it. The process of doing that will corrupt the save and force the cart to do a format of the save file making it totally new again like nobody has used it. I had to do it for a friend that got a used copy and wanted to start totally from the beginning with nothing already unlocked. Doesn't harm the game but it does make it possible to wipe games that have non erasable save files.

I'm not doing all that. I didn't beat it, maybe played it for a few hours but couldn't get a hang of the combat.

Is it? I took a look on Amazon UK and it was going for a little over 20£ for a complete copy. I mean, not super cheap for a used copy of such an old game, but not super expensive either. Though what is this about saves being impossible to delete? Never had to do that myself, so what does it affect?

I think the point is that the game was going for less than half that just 2-3 years ago.

Well it's only something that somoene would do if they were selling it on, as you'd get a lot more for it if it had no save data on it. Nobody really wants a copy of the game that's already been started as those one time encounters are always unlocked from the last person who played it, kind of kills the fun.

The PAL version is much cheaper. NA copies go for ~$100.
