NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

Oh wow...

Really, the shoddy construction of his Neo systems is the craziest thing. Pretty massive jump from what he's making now to the NT.

You can't really hot glue together an RGB HDMI NES.
Unless you are Drakon.

And then your creations should be destroyed with fire.

Yea I read some bad things about their cmvs systems on the neo-geo forums.

You're really just better off buying a NES/Famicom/Twin, paying someone to RGB mod it, and getting a framemeister for that amount of money.

Stage 5-1 in Batman Return of the Joker is ridiculous, had to use a continue, lol, also this game feels shorter than the previous one.

And plus, you have an HDMI solution for multiple consoles at that point.

Off topic, but is Drakon even still doing stuff? Seems like everyone knows his rep now so how can anyone think of getting him to mod their system?

I saw a post from him a while ago that showed new system work and "how far he had come" etc. I think that was on his personal forums before they went down. For the longest time, he was listed as a good RGB Modder by VileTim... I suspect he got plenty of business by folks who didn't know any better due to that.

I haven't been that exposed to him, but doesn't he actually know a thing or two even though his workmanship is pretty crap?

People aren't entirely sure. Baphomet could probably chime in better. Near as I can tell he is some kind of idiot savant. Like, he could fix a space station by wiring something unrelated through the cigarette lighter of a car. His stuff works, but often makes no sense at all, and is messy as shit.

Yeah, he was one of the first people that Tim sent out his NESRGB boards to, even before they were being sold iirc. I would figure that by this point it might be better for him to use a new name if he starts providing mods again since just googling for his name and "console mods" brings up nothing but bad stuff about him and his work. With GameTechUS's video review being one of the first that shows up with video search/youtube.

Well he's been doing it for years now, hopefully he did get better at it. I don't mind him doing established mods, it's his experimentations I don't trust. His knowledge is spotty and he extrapolates quite a bit to fill the blanks. I wouldn't do a Drakon mod until it has been peer-reviewed. And even then I'd try to review it myself before attempting it.

FYI, my local Barnes & Noble had about 10 copies of Retro Gamer's NES/Master System book. Not hard to find and looks pretty sweet. Some content is recycled from past mags, I think. I'm not a RG subscriber but I just bought the previous issue with the Top 50 NES games of all time and that feature is reprinted exactly in the NES book.

Also, you will have a thing that actually exists.

Minor point but worth consideration.

Ha, minor consideration.

Eh... That's debatable.

Half the stuff he spouted was basically gibberish.

I can't imagine how much time he must have spent getting his mods working, only to literally freeze everything with tons of hot glue hoping it would never come undone.

He also melted phonedork's AV Famicom and told him to deal with it.

I wish those pictures were still up somewhere. Absolutely nuts. And his response was "Well, I felt bad and gave him a discount!"

He charged money to do this.

Here's GamePro's The Cutting Edge article on the Color Dreams "SuperCartridge" for NES Hellraiser, which of course was canned.

It probably would have sucked considering it's Color Dreams but it would have been so awesome for a Hellraiser game to exist on the NES.

it probably would have been released very late, in small amounts and would be incredibly expensive nowadays because it would be impossible to clone.

So much Nostalgia! i can't take it anymore! I'm now on a quest to rebuild my NES Collection.

Not sure i would advice anybody starting this. When I started as a serious retrogamer, one of the reasons was the old games was cheaper than new ones, while often of the same quality. That argument is completely invalid now unfortunately.

I wouldn't say "completely." Depends on what they're going for. It's not exactly dirt cheap anymore, but not everyone is dying to own copies of Metal Storm and Gun-Nac, either.

I didn't have that much games I owned.

I rented and traded with friends mostly.

I had:

Super Mario Brothers/Duck Hunt (pack in with my Action Set-grey Zapper FTW)
Ducktales
Little Nemo - was a big Capcom fan back then
Super Mario Brothers 3
Contra
The Karate Kid - my only stinker.

That's it.

Just beaten Batman Return of the Joker recently...and it's not as good as the 1st game. Graphically, it's amazing on the NES, one of the best, but the changes in gameplay and levels are what I'm not too big of a fan of compared to the 1st game. Sections were too short, has plenty of cheap moments and the Joker wasn't as difficult, in fact I beat him on my 1st try in Stage 6 and 3rd try in Stage 7. How is this game shorter than the 1st even though it has more stages is what I want to know. It's a decent game but I prefer other Sunsoft and various Batman games to it.

But its so hard to resist when you have started.
I own both those games lol.

Only a few days ago did I FINALLY take a snapshot of my NES collection; the system that started my whole gaming madness. Haven't really added to it, but never really sold anything either (looking at you Sesame Street!). About the only thing of recent is kickstarting that "Blinking Light Win" project. If I thought my Genesis collection was paltry, this might take the cake. ^_^;

I have one of their CMVS Systems and I have no complaints. I am getting tired of waiting for my NT though. :/

I also backed BLW and am still waiting for it.

Wily Wars was outsourced and Inafune commented that the debugging process for it was laborious. I wonder if that affected its possible US release.

EDIT: Just noticed I posted in the wrong thread. This was for the Genesis thread lol.

Sorry, chaps.

Nah, it came out in Europe, after all, and it WAS released in the US along with Alien Soldier and Pulseman
on the fucking Sega Channel
.

Put some time into Bokutte no Upa today. I really like it! Got to 6-1 but I'm falling asleep, gonna have to finish it later.

I never knew anyone with Sega Channel. I didn't know it was a thing until way later.
