NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

Yeah there are some, but just not much Nintendo-stuff. I live in a remote part of Europa where they never sold a lot of games unfortunately.

Hmm well at any rate, i'd still keep an eye out on any old antique stores or anywhere that sells old electronics. You never know right?

Oh definitely :) Im always on the watch, especially since i semi-collect newer stuff as well :)

I just found the most amazing game store I've ever seen. Famicom, super famicom, mega drive, any system you could think of. Imports stacked to the ceiling. It was beautiful :D

I like when I find places like that, my fav so far is this place called Lost Ark Video Games which is about an hours drive from me (Greensboro, NC) that buys & sells games/game systems dating back to the Atari all the way up to present day consoles. On top of that they have a entire arcade & pinball section set up complete w/ working pinball tables (my fav is the Indiana Jones one) and arcade cabinets like Street Fighter II.

Is that a franchise store you're getting those prices at? I was stoked today that I picked up Shatterhand for $4.99 and Little Nemo last week for the same. I'd love to be able to pick up some stuff for $1.99 even if they're just games I don't already have.

ARGHAGHH....That is what I am looking for and at that price!

Nice find!

My AV Famicom should be here tomorrow. I ordered Splatterhouse Wanpaku Graffiti and the Japanese Bionic Commando last night. Those games should both be here by the weekend/early next week, Holy Diver will be here Friday, and who knows when Kid Dracula will show up since it's shipping from Japan. I'm excited.

Dude hasn't checked prices on his games in years. He looked it up all the games I bought today to check their prices online. He said that Shatterhand should have been $14.99, lol. It had that nice $4.99 sticker on there though so he couldn't really do much.

Same thing happened to me last month with Dynamite Headdy lol. Wish that would happen more often.

Anyway, put up a post about buying a converter here and on Nintendoage, so hopefully I get some news soon.

EDIT: Holy Diver impressions too please. Thats another i'm interested in as far as Famicom only.

Small chain called Disc/Mega Replay. Mostly in Illinois and Indiana. Their prices are awesome. I've just recently kind of switched gears from SNES to NES, so most of my great deals have been on the SNES side so far. But, I got Secret of Mana for $25, Mega Man X for $6, Earthbound for $130, and Soul Blazer for $14 (think those are most of my major scores from them).

holy balls, these deals man! congrats...you know i wish there was a separate market for collectors/resellers and those of us who just wanna play these games again sometime, damn

We got a famicom, so I really really want to get lagrange point. the dream is a disk system and otocky.

Figured I'd post a picture of my meager collection. It's mostly just stuff I've picked up over the years, and what I've started buying within the past few months. Hopefully I'm posting the pictures correctly. The second picture is just some doubles I have. If someone is missing any of those and has doubles of something i don't have hit me up and maybe we can work something out.

Went to a local pawn store the other day an found copies of Battletoads and Double Dragon II, score :D

I just wish I had the space for my NES and a CRT TV where I live now, emulation is nice and all, but it just doesn't compare to the real thing.

Man I wish I could go to some place and pick up NES games for $2-$4. I don't think I've paid that little for an NES game... ever. Consider yourselves lucky if you can do that. No wonder you guys have such huge collections. :D

So I took it upon myself to find all the incorrect entries in Pricecharting's database. A week later I'm ~13% done with the NES games having found 263 incorrect entries. I think I might have underestimated how long this would take. :p

Wow great job man! So I take it that most entries are wrong if you have done 13% and 263 were incorrect. That's really shitty, since people actually use that site to see what they should pay on ebay and the like. Were the prices generally too high or too low? I'm guessing mostly too high?

Otocky is one of those games which is a perfect example of why the NES/FC era was so great. Only during that era could such odd, quirky and unique games get the greenlight to be made. There really are no other games like it.

Im jealous of the low prices you guys get games for, congrats!

Anyways, I bought a Toploader a few years ago, but hasnt really used it a ton thanks to the shitty picture quality it gives me with only RF-cables. Is there anything I can do about that?

There is a mod you can do to add AV outputs to it. It requires you to solder though. Google "nes top loader av mod" and you'll see there are a couple of videos showing the process.

I love seeing these pics because it gives me a good visual on games I need to pick up to fill in the gaps. I was trying Double Dragon II on an emulator and was shocked how well done it was. Definitely need to get a copy of that, and of course the already mentioned Shatterhand.

I was pretty much done with NES by 1990 (outside getting Mario 3) because I had moved onto the Genesis at the time, so I am missing some titles I now wish I had gotten back in the day.

This and my AV Fami arrived today! If I have time tonight I'll try to play it for a few minutes so I can check and make sure everything works fine.

Do the AV Famicom controllers have the same short cords as Super Famicom controllers? Can I replace them with cords from US controllers like I did with my Super Famicom ones? Will either the dogbone or the big square work?

Thanks! That does look a bit to complicated for me Im afraid. Have you done something like this? Maybe its easier done than it looks at first?

Yes the cords is the same as super famicom, i use US NES controller it work fine with the AV Famicom.

I've never soldered anything in my life unfortunately. Wish I had learned how to do it. It would come in handy when it's time to replace batteries in carts. The Top loader AV mod though is probably not something one should do without being comfortable with soldering.

Right, thanks. Guess I'm just throwing it back into the closet then, at least for now :)

You don't necessarily need solder to do this.

I wrote up a little blurb over on my G+ a year ago or so showing how I swapped out and replaced the batteries in my Kirby Block Ball and Donkey Kong Gameboy carts. No reason that I can see that the same method couldn't be done on say a Zelda or Zelda II cart.

You VERY carefully pry the connection off the top of the battery, slide the old battery out, slide the new one back under, press the connector back on and then tightly apply a nice piece of electrical tape on top. Works like a charm. Battery costs $3-4.

Here are some pics....

Been cleaning off the carts from the attic, one by one.

So far this SMB/Duck Hunt cart has been the most disgustingly dirty one yet, and it explains why it had trouble booting up so much for that matter. It is also one that I remember getting at Funcoland along with the Zapper about 20 years ago for something like $10 which is probably why it is so filthy (bunch of animals). My cleaning method involves alcohol with Q-tips to give it an initial wipe down, dry, then a good scrub with a hard white eraser...then I repeat the Q-tip step, dry again...place the cart back together. So much crap comes off it is amazing how it all builds up in there. Cotton balls work great too BTW.

Here are some before and after pics...unfortunately it isn't flawless but it is still a heck of a lot better than it was.

^nice haul Rygar, and womp - is it working now? looks vastly improved...still wish i was more proficient/confident in taking apart my old NES just to clean its internal connectors myself

There's not too much too it, they made it rather easy with the front-loader. No special screwdrivers needed or anything.

Find a photo guide and it's fairly straightforward. Would be very hard to break anything unless you were trying.

Worth doing purely to replace the 72-pin connector in most NES consoles.

^i really should man up and do that sometime...mine loads well currently (buddy found it back in '05 fresh out of the box!), i'm just kind've a sissy about opening these things. ive been working on a seemingly dead 32X lately and no matter how hard i try. i reattach everything as i remember it and something doens't fit right...it might be in my head but i get worried and lose confidence, even though these older systems are far sturdier/less complicated. i genuinely envy dudes comfortable with soldering & tinkering like low level engineering students, but i guess i should be prepared to fuck a few things up to get there, might be overthinking it

You're definitely over thinking it. The first thing I ever soldered was a region mod for a model 2 genesis. Since then I've done a bunch of stuff and everything has worked as intended.

I'm trying to think of anything that could actually go wrong in a NES, and there's really very little. The only thing I remember needing to remove/attach is the 72-pin connector it'self, and that essentially slides onto a series of pins itself.

I was maybe a bit adventurous when I disabled the 10NES chip, but that ended up going fine as well, no constant resets anymore, and region free!
It's not that great though, since most non-PAL games run at the wrong speed on my PAL system.

What causes a battery to die anyway? Just playing for really long periods over time? Havent experienced that with any of the games I own...so far, but its nice to know that its not something that costs alot to do.

Time. Batteries run out after a while, you know. Whether you're playing the game or not shouldn't really matter, the whole point of it being there is to provide power to the save chip all the time, because battery-backed save chips only hold files as long as they're getting power.

I have actually never had any batteries stop working yet, even though I've had my Nes since 91 I think. Wonder if it does have something to do with time as well after all.

Boots up instantly now! :D

And dude, there are PLENTY of visual aids online at your disposal. As was already mentioned, there isn't a whole lot inside or to the thing. The long part of it is unscrewing all the screws, just keep them separated by section. It is a 15 min process of taking it apart, cleaning it out, putting it back together.

I used the old toothbrush dipped in alcohol method for scrubbing the pins after first bending them back into place with a small eyeglass sized flathead.

Then again, if yours works fine? I wouldn't bother. Instead, focus on cleaning the carts.

I swear, picking up a NES cart is like picking up a dime store whore - never know what kind of dirt has been accumulated from being in and out of various NES systems over the years. ;)

The ones in my personal collection that I have owned since day one have been MUCH cleaner than the others that I had picked up from Funcoland third hand back in the day.

Today's pick ups. Pretty crappy deal on them but I drove out of the way to check the store out and wasn't leaving empty at that point. Plus they were in awesome shape.

As a bonus...here is my 5 year old playing Castlevania with my brother earlier. He made it to the first boss without dying!

What I love about the NES is the small and simple controllers. Perfect for his little hands.

Excellent taste, sir.

Alright! Won a T89 converter on ebay.

*Not my picture, just the image that was part of the auction*

Skykid came with it, but it looks like a pirate cart? Either way i'm just glad to finally have a converter.

EDIT: lol whew, that 72-60 label kinda made me think i'd jumped on the wrong version of the converter, but apparently its just labeled like that.
