NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

Still actively bummed out that Deja Vu 2 never made it past the prototype stage. Yes it eventually made it to GBC, just not the same though.

Graph paper it is. But I think I should take a picture of my ghetto map for the hell of it lol. Its not finished of course, but I like to do alot of small details...

Heh, it was doing the Metroid appreciation thread. Started with Metroid 1...but never made it to the rest.

Connecting to the Genesis side, apparently im gonna have to do the same for Phantasy Star 2 and Shining in the Darkness.

Finally my wife took some photos of the NES games that arrived so I feel like I can post in this thread now.

Not really 'must haves' just games that I had and played as a kid so hold a lot of sentimental value to me.

Edit - I thought that the Faxanadu was CIB from the picture on eBay. Turns out it was just a case with a cover. :(

Also - That map is badass.

Seriously is a bummer. The GBC version is definitely still fun though.

I love those MacVenture NES ports. Shadowgate is one of my favorite NES games ever and definitely my favorite point-and click. Can't wait for the reboot coming to PC/appstores soon.

Still need to track down an Uninvited cart for the collection.

First time posting in this thread. Started collecting in December, and I'm up to 29 CIB games at this point. Here are my most recent acquisitions (I've also got 4 more on the way):

The Zelda is a mint non-Rev A (including the cart, 5-screw flathead style). I have pretty high standards for the boxes, so my rate of accumulation is a bit on the slow side as I wait for the right ones to come along. There should be a dead mint circle seal Super Mario Bros. 2 in my mailbox sometime today.

I have to say, I've really enjoyed replaying these old games more than most of the modern stuff I've played in the last 6 years. They have certain qualities that you just can't get from games anymore.

Anyone mind telling me what the difference between these two games are:
1 & 2

Is it just that the first one is only Donkey Kong and the second also has Donkey Kong jr?

At first I thought they were just PAL A & B versions of the same game but they're both apparently PAL A.

This is all that is left of my NES collection which at one time included over 35 NES games, 2 working NES systems, 4 controllers, 2 RF adapters, 2 zappers as well as the pictured Game Genie, unknown NES Joystick (it doesn't list a brand name/maker), and broken Vaus Arkanoid controller.

Well my NES came and... bleh, it doesn't work properly.

Worked fine when it came, played a bit of SMB3 then went and completed SMB1. Came back to it later to play through SMB3 and I get a flashing yellow screen and a blinking power light.

Did some googling and I either need to clean the pin connector or replace it but man, those screws are in tight, incredibly hard to open when you only have shitty tiny screwdrivers with barely any grip, going to just have to wait till I have some good screwdrivers before I can play it I guess, that sucks.

Could try cleaning the game itself with some qtips and alcohol. But, yeah I'd just change the pin connector. I did mine about five years ago now and it's still going strong. If a game doesn't start the first try, I know it's cause it needs cleaned, not the system (I clean all my new games any way).

The blinking light problem sounds like a faulty 10-NES chip. There are lots of tutorials on youtube and all you need is a screwdriver and a hobby knife or scissors to disable it. Might as well do that while you're cleaning the pin connector.

Same thing happened with my old NES after digging it out of the attic....

You can fix yours...don't replace the pin connector just yet, waste of money. Just go to a hardware store and get yourself a screwdriver or one of those cheap sets. Use a small flat head to tighten up the pins in the connector already in your NES.

Next step is to clean the carts.

Seriously, I've been trying to stay away from these threads for a bit to not spend so much time (and money) on ebay, but its totally worth it all when THIS is what greets me, so awesome! I guess this made the original Metroid actually somewhat playable, I could never get over the fact that everything looked the same and that you always started with 30 life and had to spend an evening grinding just to get enough health to do anything worthwhile. Ah well, at least it laid an awesome foundation :)

Yeah I need to sit down one lazy weekend and finish it. Its crazy how fast you can get back to where you were (fresh start) with a map. Then again passwords are always great.

I need to get a cheap notebook from the dollar store, and turn it into a password log.

Definitely make sure you've cleaned the cartridges as thoroughly as you can. Flickering means the game's not reading fully and as such the 10NES chip inside is not recognising it as a genuine NES cart, then making the system power on and off.

Disabling the 10NES chip will stop the flickering, but won't make games read if they didn't read beforehand.

Replacing the 72-pin connector is really quite easy, heaps of picture tutorials around the place. Definitely use decent screwdrivers though, last thing you want to do is strip the screws.

With passwords, lately I just take a photo with my mobile phone.

Yeah, that's my usual practise too. Instant, and no misreading of characters on screen.

That said, there's something about going back to an old game and finding a page of passwords in the box that you took down however many years ago.

Finished Rockman 6 last night and it's probably my favorite out of the second half of the Famicom games. Not as good as 9, though. Now to figure out if I want to try 7 just yet or if I want to wait a bit on that.

So I've been playing some Rygar, and gotten to the last boss, but I cant beat him :( Is there something I need to know here? What tone-level should I be on?

Oh, and why the hell doesnt this game have saving/passwords!

You don't get passwords when proving how much of a man you really are.

Of course not. Just have to do it in one sitting. ;-)

It doesnt actually bother me that I have to do it one sitting. But it does bother me that one fall of a cliff and BOOM GAME OVER and restart lol. Or one second of not concentrating in that Tower near the end and BOOM GAME OVER. Anyways, the game is pretty good, but probably not among the best of its type for the Nes (and nowhere near awesomness like Zelda 2 or Faxanadu).

Dunno if it is *worth* $50 but it is the best version of Tetris on the NES.

I'd pay $50 for it, considering it was only on the market for about 4 weeks due to Nintendo acquiring the rights to the console version and then sued Atari over it.

Of course, which is why it is $50 and higher. It also just happens to be a damn good version of Tetris though too. But is it actually worth *spending* $50 on it? Hehe

I guess for the novelty at the least but everyone has their budget limits. :)

Tengen Tetris is only superior if you need multiplayer. Otherwise, the piece random number generator is wacky and it doesn't feel the same. The Nintendo version is the gold standard.

Is Tengen Tetris worth $50?

I can't remember the name of the store that advertised used games on the back pages of EGM or Gamepro in the early 90's, bu Tengen Tetris was advertised at that time for hundreds of dollars, right? Does anybody else remember if this is correct? As a kid, I always wanted this game just because of these ads but never knew the entire story behind the game.

Just yesterday, I was looking through random eBay listings and someone was selling that for $180. If that's what it goes for on average, $50 is probably a steal.

$180 is a good CIB price, while most cart-only sales run $50-60 I think. It's prices like that that make me wish I were a cart-only collector.
