NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

Okay, so any recommendations on a place to get my AV fami RGB modded? Of buy one pre-done?
I'm of course on the waiting list for a board. I have the skills to do it myself (I'm an old console modder from way back), but not the time or patience or recent practice.

I guess I'll end up doing it myself anyway, always feels shady to send stuff off to a random on a forum somewhere.

Heh, if anything, I think that's backwards.

I'd very much like to know where I could find a 15khz RGB -> 1080p HDMI converter for $50 with the supposed quality to satisfy their target market. It doesn't make sense to charge such a premium for the main unit and then skimp on the video connector.

That's actually the one thing in their whole package that I'm most curious to learn more about.

THIS.

Where is he getting this hardware that will take RGB to 1080p cleanly and still only charge this amount? Because We need to box that up and sell it individually to under cut the crap out of XRGB3 (ugh i want one so bad.. but it's TOO MUCH!)

Makes me wonder if the hardware is already inside the system, and the connector just enables it or does some weak shit. In any case, charging an extra $50 seems questionable.

Yeh I'm curious about the upscaler too. Though it does say it's "designed exclusively" for the Analogue, so maybe it'll only work with that? Maybe there's some guts in the Analogue that mean this is more of an upscaler extension than a standalone upscaler? It could also mean it's just been designed with the Analogue in mind and could still work with other systems. I hope it's the latter. Looks like you can't preorder it separately though?

I've done 10 or so for folks on here, not including other places. There's plenty of people who will vouch for me if you decide to have it done by someone else.

Sweet I'll pm you when I get my part most likely!

Maybe I'll grab a new AV Fami to mod, keep my classic one I've had for 15 years as-is.

Got some Konami Famicom exclusives in the mail today. Carts only so no pics.

Gradius II and Yume Penguin Monogatari. After I recommended those FC games in here I realized that I didn't have those two yet. So I bought them!

I already beat Yume Penguin Monogatari haha. It's really damn short and easy. Although considering the ending I got I suspect there's a better ending. I noticed on the map there was a question mark that I never got to.

Gradius II is kicking my ass though, as expected. Quite the contrast from Yume lol.

BTW, is there a reason why Yume Penguin is in a standard FC cartridge and not a Konami cart? It was released in 1991, so I thought maybe they didn't manufacture their own carts anymore by that point. But then I remembered that Wai Wai World 2 came out in '92 and that one does have a Konami cartridge. I first thought it might be a pirate but searching around for pics of the cartridge it seems to be legit.

Edit: Oh wait. Wai Wai World 2 was not released in '92 but actually in the same month as Yume Penguin Monogatari. Huh. That just makes it more confusing.

Edit²: Hmm Yume also has a different kind of product code, KDS-U8, rather than the standard Konami FC product codes that were like RCxxx.

So, I don't even have an NES collection. Should I just buy Famicom cartridges? From my understanding, if there are any differences, the Japanese version of a game is usually better, either because they fucked up the difficulty balance for the US (read: Ninja Gaiden III) or because the Famicom version has better sound. There's the odd exception, like Zelda II, but it seems like nearly everything is better in JP-land. Not sure if there's any reason to want the NES version of games...

Generally you'll be safe with FC carts. I prefer the westernized Shatterhand to Solbrain tho, lol

I sent them an email and got one back restating it has been "designed exclusively" for the Analogue, so I guess it won't work with other systems. Shame really...

My nes is acting a little weird. So a couple days ago I got The first Legend of Zelda game. I only got an nes recently and never bought it. So when I put it in I would get a grey screen. I got it cheap and it's old so I didn't think much of it. So today I decided to try it without pushing the game down after you insert it. Well it worked perfectly, when I tried it over and over again it worked every time. I test other games and would get a grey screen to, It would work on like the second or third try though. If I didn't push in down it worked as well. Before I got LoZ this never happened.

So anyway is this just age?

If you haven't already look into how to disable the lockout chip. Its a quick 10 minute mod at worst.

Not reading the lockout chip is usually the trouble with the older nes as long as the games are clean and the pin connector isn't bad.

The NES was fucking up back when it was new. There are a couple of things at play.

Most important is the pin connector that you're plugging your games into. It's just metal touching metal. On an NES you would push the game down to press against the metal contacts and make damn sure they're touching so the system can read the cart's data. If I understood what you're saying, you're not pushing the cart down and powering on the system and it's working anyway? That means someone replaced the original connector (which never did that, even day one) with a new one that is wound super tight and is already making contact before you even push it down to bend the metal further.

The second thing that happens is, if the connectors are dirty, the system won't be able to read the game's data well. If the NES10 lockout chip is active and can't verify that the game is authentic, it resets the system. If you're seeing a flashing gray or flashing garbage screen, the game is dirty and needs to be cleaned. If you're seeing a solid gray screen, the NES10 chip has been disabled to stop the resetting but the game is still dirty and needs to be cleaned.

TL;DR, nothing to do with age but someone has refurbished the system with a new pin connector that is tighter than the original ever was.

One thing I never see anyone do but works for me every time: if the system is clean, and the cart is clean (or clean enough!), and you pop it in and it didn't work right away, turn the system off, put your finger into the indented section of the cart and wiggle it left to right a couple of times, then turn it on again.

Yeah, if keeping it up works better than pushing it down, then keep it up.

Moving the thing up and down will just bend the contacts and eventually that'll cause problems. The whole reason the NES is infamous for not reading carts and (stupidly) blowing into cartridges is that fucking stupid design, which had nothing to do with functionality and had more to do with making it look more like a VCR.

I recently got a refurbished NES with a new connector and it's the same way. Works better up. Harder to pull cartridges out.

So I quit collecting games, but I'm back on board with a new plan.

I'm going to collect every silver box Konami NES game complete in box.

US versions, but PAL versions for those not silver box in the US (eg Turtles, Metal Gear etc released as Ultra in the US, but Konami silver in Europe/Australia).

I've had some for 20 years, I'm up to 12 right now. But I think this will be a mighty fine looking collection, and not even too expensive. Heck I already have most of the valuable ones (Castlevanias and Contras).

I kinda want a boxed Life Force because it has one of the coolest box arts ever, lol. Would totally be redundant since I have the Salamander Deluxe Pack though (arcade version of the game and the same, albeit cropped box art).

This happened yesterday. Got a complete stack-up at a local store. It had some ancient marker on the front, some one drew smily faces on it in the 80's. We got a lot of the marker off so just a light stain remains. It's the only copy I've ever ran into physically.

Nice find man. You probably know the value of it better than I do, but I know it's always great to run into something from the 80s that originally shipped with a bunch of pieces, and to have everything included still

Adventure Island IV is JP only right? As a platformer, it should be pretty easy to play without knowing Japanese? Doing just fine with Dracula Kun and Gun*nac (but i still dont know what the shop choices are lol).

Yes, but in a hilarious twist on par with the two series' convoluted history, it's more of a Wonder Boy game than a straight up platformer.

Not sure. Their prices are abysmal, regardless. You can find lesser known things for fair prices sometimes, but if they're advertising it you probably won't even want to look.

Adventure Island IV is more of an adventure game, like Monster World, amusingly enough (and as noted by Mzo). I can't recall if you need to pay attention to the text much, but it's a great little game if you like Monster World. See Also: Super Adventure Island II.

When you come back home Tina is waiting for you and sleeps in the bed with you when you save your game. Then when you leave she follows you outside and waves as you walk away.

It is kawaii as fuck.

Received my Turbo Twin Famicom last night, just awesome! The seller even threw in a couple of extra games, including the Goonies. I don't have most of the games I ordered yet, but I am already in love. The only downside is the controller cords are still too short, even though they are longer than the normal Famicom, but they are still longer than my Intellivision cords at least.

For those of you that are using AV Famicoms/Twins what are you using for a power supply? I've read that you an use a step down converter or a universal power supply from radio shack or the like.

I don't have either a Famicom or Famicom Twin but there should be adapters available for your country on ebay or something, so you don't have to bother with step-down converters and such. For example, I have an adapter for my Super Famicom that I can plug directly into the local 230V outlets here.

My AV Fami came with a 3rd party AC adapter by Game Mate, but it crapped out recently. For the meantime I've used a Mega Drive 1 adapter, and I have ordered a SFC adapter which should be arriving soon.
