NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

Hehe yeah those Sunsoft games almost require a good pair of speakers to fully be able to appreciate the music. Nice setup. And don't worry about the consoles being on the floor. These old consoles almost look better when on the floor lol.

Well, after seven weeks and having to get a replacement sent after the first didn't arrive, I now own a Famicom Disk System.

Now to get some more games for this thing. So far I have these:
Nazo no Murasame-jo
Super Mario Bros. 2
Super Mario Bros.
Metroid
Moero Twinbee (3 player goodness)
Volleyball
Pro Wrestling

Games I'm looking into acquiring:
Kiki Kaikai (Pocky & Rocky series)
Ai Senshi Nicol
Meikyuu Jiin Dababa
Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa
Vs. Excite Bike
Kaettekita Mario Bros.
Esper Dream
Falsion (an excuse to sink money into the almost unused 3D System?)

I really wish this thing had more going for it, but there really isn't very much interesting stuff--especially when you consider all the games that got NES ports. Am I missing any absolute must haves for the system?

The most interesting thing about the FDS version of games is comparing the region differences, so definitely check out the two Zeldas, Castlevania and Kid Icarus. There's also Doki Doki Panic, the ultimate example of modifying a game for the West.
Also check out Miracle of Almana, a Konami game that plays a lot like Castlevania but with an Indiana Jones aesthetic.
There's also the Famicom Grand Prix games which are pretty fun racers. The first one plays like RC Pro Am, the second, 3D Hot Rally, is like Nintendo's version of Rad Racer with Mario and Luigi as the drivers.

Arumana no Kiseki!
That plus Ai Senshi Nicol, Meikyuu Jiin Dababa - killer audio, the extra audio channel sounds amazing.

Castlevanias with saving...

Every single Konami game basically. The 'Konamic' sports games are great too, the soccer one is my favourite 8-bit sports game, plays like a soccer blades of steel.

Esper Dream's a bit clunky really.

FDS is fun as hell.

Went to the fleamarket yesterday as I haven't been game hunting in awhile and was craving an old game or two. The guy says he's closing shop at the end of the month and was making deals with me.

100 bucks for all the games below. What do you think?
I didn't realize till later he threw in the nascar, rad racer, and world games carts. Guess he didn't want them, or he thought I wanted them. Ick. I guess Rad Racer isn't bad.

WHAT. I lived in Japan for 3 years and never knew this game was out there. I thought these games were only on SNES.. Now I see there's even one on PC engine.

I must acquire these!

Interesting to see others picking up/fixing Famicom Disk Systems - I got mine up and running for the first time yesterday thanks to a new belt I just installed. :)

I haven't had a chance to try them all yet, but here's my small collection:
-All Night Nippon Super Mario Bros (a copy, but works perfectly)
-Castlevania
-Doki Doki Panic
-Kaette Kita Mario Bros
-Kid Icarus
-Metroid
-Otocky
-Super Mario Bros. 2
-Volleyball

Seems pretty good for that price. Some good games in there. And Rad Racer is rad! It's a pretty good Outrun clone.

Also I don't think you can hotlink using that image host, or something else weird is going on, because your picture isn't visible. I had to dig it up in the source code. For others, here's a link to the picture: http://postimg.org/image/sxqiiow3j/

Thanks, buddy.

I'll probably go back there and see what else I can find this weekend.
I've been famicom focused for so long, I'm a little befuddled when looking at NES games. Don't know what's rare, what's good.. So I ended up just trying to grab games I never saw in Japan, like the awful Gilligan's Island and Three Stooges.

It's one of the flickeriest NES games of all time. It's still really fun to play, but if you're all about the best version of a game released then there are better ones out there.

The DS game is great.

Gargoyles Quest II is coming to VC, for those of you out there not too keen on that aftermarket price but happen to own a WiiU. Great game, highly recommended.

Are there any Famiclones that output in RGB, with good compatibility?

I'm not baller enough right now to be able to afford a NESRGB.

$60+ on eBay? Huh. I'm glad I bought it randomly at a local shop a few years ago for a few bucks. I only played it once or twice, though. I should play it again.

lol you got that right. I remember the first time I played it was on a PAL system... it's even worse there. And more sloooowdown. It's almost unplayable on PAL systems because of all the flickering.

IIRC, the best part of GQII is how, during the intro, instead of one monster crawling in to give you a message and then die, like three of them do it in a row.

Hey guys, I picked up an official NES cleaning cart factory sealed, in mint condition recently for free as part of a deal at a car boot sale. I'm told they're still the best way to keep a NES clean, but I'm in two minds on whether to open it or not because I have no idea of what it's actually worth.

They seem to go for a wide range of prices used on eBay, but so far I haven't seen an example of a 'new' one. Does anyone have any idea of the value?

I got a homebrew cart of Zooming Secretary today, woo.

My first NES purchase in a VERY long time, actually (with a few exceptions, all I can buy is homebrew/repros at this point).

It's very classic arcade designed ala Donkey Kong and similar ilk.

That's one sexy RCA TV it's playing on.
That was a recent Craigslist find, $10.

It's nice and probably the flattest CRT I've ever seen, but it's composite and component only, which is strange (and I only have an s-video cable for the SNES, cry).

But like the rest of my game room at the moment, it's all probably temporary as I build it up nice.

if you can spare the expense, an RGB cable + RGB->Component transcoder will give you a much better picture for your SNES.

Speaking of RGB transcoders for CRTs I keep meaning to really search for something more assuring of quality than the random chinese YUV box that I and many others have. It looks good, don't get me wrong, but I'm almost certain it could be better.

Does yours have a make or model number?

Love reading through this thread. Just recently picked up this lot of NES/SNES/GB games at a yard sale. Had a lot of quality items in it, obviously the top loader but I also was also able to get TMNT: Tournament Fighters in this lot, had no idea it was valuable at the time. Best part about it, the lot only cost me $30.
Here's a look at my current NES shelve although I do have a few more games coming in. (Sorry about the large ass picture, imgur was down when I tried to upload these and minus's editor wasn't working so whatever.)

Sold off the doubles after that lot and turned it into a few uncommon games (Dragon Warrior III, Power Blade, and Metal Storm) figured it was money I didn't need so I splurged on a few. I will say I have a lot more fun finding NES games in the wild then I do other systems though.

Great pickup for that price. That's the sort of pickups that we are all dreaming about doing, but which are getting more and more uncommon these days. And don't worry about the picture size. It's good that they're large so that we can see the end labels etc better. :)

Collection is looking really nice so far. A few sorta bad games there (Black Bass? Platoon? lol) but otherwise mostly only the great classics. It also reminded me that I need to pick up Legendary Wings and Bionic Commando myself.

... I envy you so hard. But congratulations sir. I hope I can achieve such a glorious recovery someday as well. Fantastic! Thanks for posting.

Hey, part of the charm of the NES are the crappy ass games.
Some of them I'm quite fond of... Still never beat Total Recall yet.. but I will... oh yes, someday.

lol! Never thought I'd be greatfull to have a mile long backlog and lots of general retro setup stuff to do.

This. Of course, if I see something...i'm gonna grab it. Thats the only thing about still being interested in retro today. There is no "well it'll probably be on sale next week".

Lovely collection. Needs more Ninja Gaiden though. ;)

this game drought is killing my wallet its making me go buy more rare stuff then i normally would :P just bought mighty final fight

How do you like MFF? I have the Game Boy Advance port but as you can imagine the resolution is all fucked up. Might pick it up on VC when I get a WiiU for Bayo2.

Doh. You had me looking up to see if I might have had it in my famicom collection.

Brand new game from 2011 for NES hardware. Nice. I like these arcade classic style games too. Might have to get it!
