NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

So...do those box protectors actually work nicely for NES and SNES / SFC boxes?

Depends on where you get them I guess since they can vary a bit, but the ones I have are great. What usually varies is the thickness of the plastic, but sometimes also the sizes. I bought some Game Boy box protectors that were slightly larger than they should be which made me a bit disappointed, but it was only a few millimeters of wiggle room so I didn't care. Usually they fit like a glove. They also have the added effect of making the box look better. So I'd definitely recommend them.

I just wish I could find ones for the other Famicom sizes, like the small box games.

Guess I should look into things a little more.

On another note: Journey to Silius makes me want to suplex a refrigerator. I really cant move on to another NES game until I beat it lol.

I got ones from http://videogameboxprotectors.com and they're excellent, if a bit expensive.

That's the same one that goes under the name Keep_em_minty on ebay right? At least the pictures are the same. Those are the ones I bought and they are indeed excellent. Very high quality and fairly thick and sturdy plastic. Just their Game Boy box protectors are slightly too large. You can see it in the pictures actually but I didn't think of it when I bought them. It's not like they're way too big or that it's a problem or anything, but compared to their Famicom protectors they don't fit as snuggly. I thought that maybe it's so they can house Virtual Boy boxes as well as is stated, but one of my friends has some CIB VB games and they're the exact same size as GB boxes.

Yay, the twin has arrived! It's beautiful and is in almost perfect shape, disk games also have the stickers like they are brand new.

The seller also included new AC and AV cables, the AC-Adapter is universal too, lucky I have a japanese-euro plug converter:

So, are there any cases for NES carts that are similar to the Universal ones? I'd like to get some cases that can hold the cartridge and (maybe) booklets, along with some custom cover artwork.

I realize that the UGCs have to be modified, but I'd rather not go through that trouble if a solution exists for this issue.

Well I can say I finally have some incentive to play some of my NES games again. I finally got a properly working NES toploader for a good price. This would be the third one I own but the only working one at the moment. First one looked like someone drowned it in water for several years and the other one I messed up when trying to composite mod it, turns out my interpretation of a circuit wasn't very good and I also soldered to the wrong pin as I was getting frustrated so that one is currently sitting fried. Although if I ever get bored I think I can hobble one together out of the two as I did have the first one working at one time.

But anyways found this one on ebay poorly listed and ended up winning it for $40 shipped. Worked great and I ended up swapping the shell with one of my others as this one was cracked in a few places. Bought a premade composite circuit and soldered it in properly and now have a working composite modded NES. I was considering NESRGB but don't really wanna spend that much for a console that isn't my top priority.

Here's some pics and yes I know it's got some jailbars, I went for the lazy approach.

I need some advice, GAF. I recently purchased a large lot of NES games and I'm debating whether to sell or hold onto the following. All are CIB in very nice shape.

Abadox
The Last Starfighter
Pin Bot
Time Lord
Top Gun: The Second Mission

I know almost nothing about these. Does anyone have strong opinions one way or the other?

Abadox is a really hard, but really neat shmup in the style of Life Force, with lots of gooey, gross looking organic monsters and aliens to blast. Plays like a cross between that and Section Z or Side Arms by Capcom. I'd say it's worth keeping, and worth trying out.

Pin Bot is one of my personal favorite pinball games. Rare developed this version of it and the music is godlike, pretty sure Dave Wise adapted it from the original pinball board's music. Easily one of the best pinball games on the NES next to Pinball Quest.

Don't have opinions on the other games, but I've seen Time Lord and it doesn't look that great. Has some neat warping effects, but it's a pretty generic platformer with spotty controls.

You could play them. Then you would know everything about them.

You should definitely sell Abadox, though. To me.

The Last Starfighter is a rebranded port of an old C64 game called Uridium which was somewhat popular in its day but I don't know if it's particularly valuable, especially in NA.

My Famicom came in and it's a rousing success. The AV mod works great, the controllers are in good condition, and the connector looks like it has been really taken care of. All my carts worked on the first try without cleaning except for one. I also took my FDS for a spin and it works perfectly and all my games are the correct ones. I am very pleased. I just need one more famicom game and my physical collection should be complete.

Anyone care to see if this is a good price? I've got like 16 hours to decide. A guy is offering me

NES - 55 Euro
Two controllers - Included with the NES
Super Mario Bros 1 (Just the cart) - 5 euro
Super Mario Bros 3 (Just the cart) - 20 euro
Zelda 2 (Complete with packaging and manual) - 55 euro

Good deal?

I can't get one of my games (MM3) working. I can occasionally get it to start, but it never makes it past the title screen without fucking up and freezing. I took it back to where I bought it and they got it working perfectly. I assume it's my console, but I can get the one other game (Metal Gear) I have to work fine 100% of the time. I'm guessing something's up with my 72-pin since I can get Metal Gear to work even when the cartridge isn't even pushed down. Anybody have any idea what the hell could be going on?

Been stalling on NES games lately.

My best find was from a coworker late last year.

$90 for all that. i didn't pay nothing but i got it cheap. Ninja Gaiden 2 and Mike Tyson are worth more than that together.

On a side note while these aren't Mega Man grabbed them for decent prices from the local game shop. Guardian Legend was $10 and Silius was $20. Beats having to wait for shipping. Figured they've been recommended several times through this thread so I grabbed them.

How odd. I just sat down in front of my computer, put on the stage 3 music from Silius for some reason, then opened this thread and bam there it is.

Three great, great pickups there. Congrats.

+1 for picking up Journey to Silius, most underrated NES game IMO.

Music is kickass, especially for the NES. Easily tops of my list so far. It's amazing how many of these games got overlooked. The NES isn't my first console to collect for but these games are quite charming and I have been getting into it more and more.

Yeah I think JTS has my favorite soundtrack on the NES. All the songs are just awesome. That trademark Sunsoft bass is really put to good use there. And the melodies are really good as well. Just great. In fact, the Stage 2 music is probably my favorite NES song.

Not sure if I asked this earlier (this thread is huge) but anyone know of a reliable place to get a replacement NES AC Adapter? All the third party ones on Amazon appear to be straight garbage.

I'd check out local retro shops, or perhaps Craigslist auctions... ask people who are selling their NES if they would split and sell you just the adaptor.

Also, any Whomp Em fans here? Was playing it, and its not too bad. Very tight and smooth controls. But it's hilarious how they took a game that is so blatantly based off of Journey to the West, added a tip to his pole to turn it into a spear and a cap in the lead character's hair, then pass the game off as an adventure starring a Native American (with a real stereotypical boxart). The levels you go to have bamboo and Chinese-esque music even :P

I played Whomp 'Em a bit ago. Always wanted to since it's a sequel to a Wonder Boy port and therefore related in a way.

I got through the game pretty quickly and up to the final stages in the clouds, but there was something weird going on that gave me trouble so I stopped. Can't remember what right now.

No dice on AC adapters.

Got Zoda's Revenge, Chameleon Twist, and Legacy of the Wizard though.

Also beat Journey to Silius! (finally).

Thanks for the input guys. Had no idea they were this hard to come across I guess I just figured reprods would be readily available but I guess there just isn't that much demand. Guess I might have to start hitting up yard sales and flea markets.

I can grab you one tomorrow probably.

Got a few more titles in. Decided to just pay up and get the Mega Man titles. 3 and 5 are on their way still. This copy of 6 was listed as having stuck pixels, figured it was just his nes and was right and got it for only $34. Also grabbed isolated warrior after reading a speculation thread on NintendoAge. Game sounded interesting enough and didn't cost much so I grabbed it.
