NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

Bloodlines also had a clamshell variant IIRC, so you don't necessarily have to bother with the cardboard one (unless of course you're specifically collecting each and every variant of games).

It is much more expensive, though. I would have gotten the clamshell otherwise.

I've got a request if someone has the time to take some pictures. I bought a NES lot off of eBay and Contra was included which only produces a black screen and solid red power light. I fear the cart is toast as I have took apart the cart and have cleaned it numerous times. I do have hope that there's something wrong with a certain solder job on the cart. Would somebody be able to take a pic of their contra board front and back. Google images is failing me here. Thanks in advance.

There are photos/scans of most NES/FC PCBs on the NesCartDB. Here's Contra:

I'm going to buy myself a slightly more expensive Famicom game today. I'm either going to buy Gourmet World (Panic Restaurant) or Spartan X-2. They're vastly different, and I want both, but can't decide. They're both like the same amount of money. Any advice? I'll buy the other one at some later date. I think I'm leaning Spartan X-2, though, since I don't have any beat 'em ups.

Having played neither, my gut would say go with Gourmet World. They both look really good, though, and I'd usually probably prefer getting an Irem-developed game over most other companies.

look at the case design for the famiclone lmao

What games are you looking for? I've never ordered from them but I do have some repros on hand.

From him specifically, I was looking at Mr. Gimmick. Doesn't seem like too many folks are offering repros on that one, likely given the cost of the donor cart needed (Batman ROTJ).

I'm also looking for some others. Some of these I was thinking of ordering from OCD.
Recca
Mario 2 Japan
Splatterhouse Wanpaku Graffiti
Ufouria

Check your PMs.

I'm thinking about jumping on the RGB train and having mine modded. Are there any resources I can look up to look into getting mine modded. About how much does it usually run people? AV Famicoms can be modded, right?

I have installed numerous rgb boards for folks on here. In fact one just received his back today.

If you're wanting to do an av Famicom you'd be looking at $96AUS plus shipping for the boards alone, installation varies depending on who does it. It would be about $110 or so depending on exactly what you wanted if I were doing it.

So $250 USD is probably a realistic amount for everything plus shipping back and fourth.

That's a doable price range for me. I might ask for your services soon then, assuming you're taking orders at the moment.

And it's totally awesome! Even though I'm sticking with s-video atm it's still a huge upgrade.

Something I hadn't even realized beforehand is that the NESRGB board also comes with improved audio. The old mono port sounds really muffled by comparison.

Having the palette switch is also pretty nice. The other palettes actually don't look as bad as I was thinking they might. Even the playchoice-10 palette isn't as garish as I was initially led to believe.

I've got my hands full for another 2 weeks probably, but after that I should be free. We also would have to wait until more boards are manufactured and available. Other than that feel free to pm me if you decide to have it done. Its 100% worth it if you're able to take advantage of the svideo or rgb. Its a massive improvement.

I'll definitely make sure to let you know if I do decide to have it done, then. Thanks for the info.

I have been getting back into nes games lately and having a ton of fun with it.

Picked up all of these at Midwest gaming classic last week.

Any other recommendations?

I still want to get metal storm, river city ransom, and some of the Disney capcom games.

I'm still not convinced if rgb for the nes is worth it.. Seems like composite is good enough.

The nes color pallete and detail is so limited though.. It does wonders on genesis and SNES. I've seen the beauty of rgb.

And neither of those really have as much of an improvement as an nes. There's a reason people spend up to $400 for an rgb nes.

Composite isn't good enough for anything as far as I'm concerned.

The dot crawl on NES is fucking bad.

If anything, the limited color palette of the NES is why you should be getting the NESRGB. With older consoles you're going to have a lot of horizontal and vertical hard edges because the small palette, and that's where the dot crawl is the most noticeable.

Recently picked up an NES Zapper and was wondering why it doesn't work on my CRT TV. When I pulled the trigger the screen flashes but it doesn't register a hit. The TV is a flat screen model but not an HD one. I was wondering if the Zapper was faulty.

Probably faulty. A flat screen should work fine.

I thought they did in fact not work well on flat screen CRTs? I haven't tried it though since I don't have a zapper. I have a flat screen trinitron so if it does work I'll be aquiring a zapper in the immidiate future!

They work fine.

Is the brightness on your CRT set up fairly low? Try upping it a bit. If not, the zapper may be defective.

Thank for the tips. I'll give it another go when I get a chance. I did take it apart and nothing looked out of place so I gave it a good cleaning while I was at it.

Having gotten increasingly frustrated at the lack of what I would consider the "perfect" retro game storage shelf, I decided to take it to the streets.

This is a proof of concept (final will be sanded and finished to look classy, etc.), but here's the first shelf of what I am building.

Edit: Linked the pic just in case, maybe I'll take a different shot later.

Worst case scenario, Zappers of both colors are not rare at all and quite cheap. (not the japanese revolver one, though!)

Shadowgate
Gunsmoke
Master Blaster
Bionic Commando
Excitebike
RC Pro Am
Mike Tyson's Punch Out
Legend of Zelda
Mario 3
Contra

Oh yeah. Good stuff

So after installing an nes rgb board for a GAF member on a toploader with one of those 3d printed SNES multiout panels, I'm selling my rgb front loader and buying myself a toploader with that 3d SNES panel for myself.

Its in great condition and comes with everything needed. Looking for $350 shipped in the states if anyone is interested.

Also, if anyone is considering buying one of those 3d printed panels for their toploader I definitely recommend them. They look great and work very good.

Fuck you Mega Man 5 prices!

I managed to snag an auction at $60 last month, but then the seller went MIA and never shipped and I had to dispute with eBay.

Now people are bidding over $75.

Grrrrrrr.

Yeah, Mega Man 5 is a tough one to get for a decent price. I got real lucky with mine and managed to snag an auction for $100 less than the going rate (I buy CIB). In quite excellent condition, too.

MM5 was one of the few carts I have that survived my teenage years... Thank de gods.

Fun game though... if easy. I just love the graphics and music in that one. It's worth the money I'd say.

It looks great but I wish there was a color-matching option.

If you wanted to go through the trouble to paint it im sure it wouldnt be too difficult. For something that's on the back of the console I wouldn't bother personally. Thing looks and works great though. Super easy to wire it for composite, svideo, and rgb.

Yesterday night, I finally managed to repair a couple of very stubborn early generation Famicom Disk Systems, thanks to a series of absolutely fantastic Japanese videos which begin with this one:
www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm5256429

Basically, even after doing the spindle hub adjustments that are widely described in all the guides available around the internet, my systems would keep spitting "error 22"s no matter what.
In the videos above, the guy describes a step about gear alignment that I think is detailed nowhere in English tutorials.
The only mention I could find about it after a quick search was a post on a forum from a guy who said he didn't want to spill the beans because he was making money from disk system repairs.
Not that I want to shit on his business or anything, but I'm guessing not everybody is in a geographical position that allows them to send him their devices, so I'd be willing to make a quick how-to here.

The question is, would anybody be interested?

Simply adding this little step in the repair procedure allowed me to make both of my systems work on the first try, while simply sticking to the "usual" steps would end up failing every time (tinkering with motor speed and magnetic head position wouldn't help).

I've considered hunting down an FDS in the past. Hardware reliability issues aside, I just can't justify it when I can't think of a game I'd really want other than Mario 2.

Yeah, it probably doesn't make a lot of sense outside of Japan.

In Japan, however, FDS is the only cheap way to play classics such as Metroid, Zelda I & II or Castlevania I & II.
Cartridge versions exist for some of those games, but they're rare and expensive.

On the other hand, disks are cheap, and Disk Systems themselves can be bought for a few hundred yens (less than USD10).
Of course, it's almost impossible to find one in working condition at those prices, but luckily, most suffer from the same problem: a broken drive belt. Replacing it gives them a second youth, and replacement belts can be had for about USD 1~ (or it's even possible to make your own with vinyl tape!).

I'm interested in tracking down an FDS, but I might hold out for a Sharp Twin Fami.

Twin Famicom has one big advantage nowadays: it has RCA outputs, so it's usable out of the box, while red-white Famicoms require modding to even work on modern displays.
They do suffer from the same drive failures as regular FDS, though, as the floppy drive inside is the same.

traded a fellow gaffer for one of my high NES wants: Vice Project DOOM - why don't more people talk about this one? it's now on my list next to Wrath of the Black Manta for gems people should talk about more

Vice is right up there with Shatterhand as one of the best gems on the system. Love the hybrid shooter/platformer thing. Nice cutscenes as well!

Oh my, i just went ahead and purchased the holy grail. Wasn't cheap. Pics to be posted once i recieve the item. The sun is shining outside tho, maybe i'll go grab a soft drink, heh.

I actually just ordered a FDS. Hopefully it'll still be working after its trip across the pond. I'm still not entirely sure there are enough reasons to own one--at the moment I'm only looking at SMB2 and Nazo no Murasame-jo. If nothing else, I'll get to listen to the startup jingle.

My favorite game on the system. Congrats.
