NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

Eh, maybe. Game Grumps also played Shatterhand (during the Jon era) and the cart didn't jump in price back then.

Are they really that popular? A friend of mine played some episode for me, with high praise, and I didn't find any of it amusing in the slightest.

Anyway, Metal Storm has been an expensive NES game relative to the rest for like 10-20 years now. Something happened last July/August that bumped it significantly. It may have seriously been Game Grumps, lol.

I'm more curious about what's going on with Bucky O'Hare lately. So glad I got my copy for $30 last year!

All it ever did for me was make me lose respect for Egoraptor.

BTW, is Getsu Fuuma Den really hard to find complete? Cart only seems pretty cheap, but I've yet to buy a cart only Famicom game and I don't want to start now.

Reasonably. The box has a lenticular cover, with two images depending on angle it's viewed at, so is likely in demand because it's pretty cool.

I have a boxed copy in beautiful condition, but I'm on the hunt for a 'super complete' version - I want the Konami collector card that came with it. Which goes for decent cash when it turns up.

If you get one with the card I'll buy the card from you ;)

Looks like the GG video on Metal Strom was posted in July 2014. Kind of amazing that these videos have to much of an effect.

Maybe Racketboy or someone needs to publish an article on the "most overvalued" games or something. Fairly common carts should not cost $100+. It's just idiotic.

EDIT: Or, honestly, we could do it ourselves. We can use the collective brain power of the whole of Retro-GAF to figure out the most over-valued titles and write a great OP on it. It could get picked up by Kotaku or one of the retro video bloggers. Seriously, it might have an effect. Stranger things have happened. If nothing else, we can keep GAFers in the know on which games they will be taking a chance on if they pay current BIN/PC prices.

IIRC Kick Master is pretty awesome too, although it's already (marginally) more expensive than Shatterhand is.

Kick Master is pretty good, once you get used to the weird range for the character's attacks (he does high, almost vertical kicks with a short range). I do like Shatterhand a bit more, overall though.

Both Kickmaster and Shatterhand are great fun. Both also have one particular "weapon" that makes the game easy. A few years ago, I tried to get through these games with no deaths, but just barely failed.

The music in Shatterhand is so good.

Wow just checked my mail history and I got my Metal Storm fami cart for $25 back in 2010.

In other news I recently got into this stuff again so I ordered an everdrive:

My sister picked up a free 21" Sony Trinitron that I should have in a couple of days feelsgood.

Holy shit. I just bought that for my friend like two months ago for like 20 on a lark. That's insane.

That is nuts. I bought the game on ebay a couple years ago for $15. This does seem like the youtube effect. Unfortunately, it happened to SCAT a few weeks after I had decided to buy it. It was a $10-20 game, but I was waiting for another CIB listing ($20-40). Then Mike Matei did a video and suddenly it was $80 loose.

I never did get that game. It is the only one remaining on my want list.

Ugh, I think the worst thing about retro collecting is when there is a game I really want to have for my collection, but I don't particularly like, and it ends up being rather expensive. I have Mega Man 2 and 3, and loved them as a kid. I would love to have Mega Man 1 to have a complete "pre-SNES" Mega Man collection, but I don't really like the game that much, and it is quite expensive.

I know it is dumb, but I always like having a complete "set" of games on my shelf, especially when they are all from the same console, I just think it looks neat and I can re-experience the whole series if I ever chose to. But when a game is quite pricey and I wouldn't even enjoy playing it, I have to draw the line, as sad as it makes me.

Not saying Mega Man 1 is a bad game, but growing up with 2 and 3 which are so much better makes it really hard to go back to 1 and find much other than frustration.

My favorite part about retro gaming is how every new day that goes by means that some game you don't have yet has just shot up in price.

:c

I'm working on this too. Besides the great ones like Ninja Gaiden, Castlevania, Shatterhand (never played it)...what other great ones are there?

Powerblade any good?

Aside from the really great ones released in the US there are a number of great import platformers:

Akumajou Special - Boku Dracula-Kun
Almana no Kiseki
Cocoron
Holy Diver
Wai Wai World 2
Metal Force (good luck finding this one though)
Samurai Pizza Cats
Mitsume ga Tooru (love this god damn game!)

I finally got my Rockman Famicom collection set; minus 6 which I have on NES. It really is frustrating; you want all of them as an essential part of an NES / Famicom and they're getting harder and harder to find. I remember a year ago you could get he full fami set for something like $100.

Rockman 1 is the hardest to find. Especially in good shape. The thing is that it didn't sell great; and it sold worse in the USA because of the stupid box art. And it really is the most unpolished, playing it again now. They just didn't finish that game before it shipped.

Well, finally got one of my "holy grail" games... a mint condition CIB Rescue Rangers 2!! Along with some other stuff too...

I remember scoffing at paying ~$100 for Little Samson many years ago... And then a few years ago thinking that $300 was too much.... At this rate I'm gonna have to pay over a grand for it if I wait too long. :-/

BTW sweet haul djtiesto! A lot of goodies there!
except for the abysmal Iron Sword.

Mega Man 1 is awesome. A little rough around the edges but it's an amazing platformer with a perfect level of difficulty. And that US box art is brilliant!

I've given up on ever getting it at this point in all honesty.

I have memories of Ironsword and Ikari III as a kid, and they're certainly not the worst games I've picked up on the platform (I did waste money on Dino Riki :P).

Um I love Rock 1, especially the music, but there's no defending the U.S. box art. I mean it's hilarious, and an interesting artefact, but it can't be seen as adding to the product.

Get the PAL version for much a better version of the same idea (silly 80s action fantasy visual for an anime looking game).

Man people need to stop hating on MM1. It laid the groundwork for the series and is actually a really fun game. It's not quite as refined but it's entirely playable and not really that difficult. I get it, it's not MM2. But it's still good.

Dino Riki is one of those games I have fond memories of as a kid.

Didn't age that well, admittedly, but it did some cool stuff.

Not dumb at all. I'm the same way. But I'm probably worse than you as I would go ahead and shell out the $ and regret it immediately. But my collection would be complete!

I'm not hating on Rockman 1, don't get me wrong. We simply agree that it is unpolished, and it is published fact that the game wasn't finished. It was originally supposed to have 8 Robot Masters. I do believe that if it hadn't garnered a series of superior sequels, it would be regarded as a hidden gem; the core mechanics are sound.

Plus, I'll never get over how easy it is to figure out the first Robot Master to fight, at least in Japan... Rock beats scissors.

Haha oddly I just sold my Pal copy and bought the NTSC one because I prefer the box art. You're right, it's hilariously shit. I love it

I didn't mean to accuse you specifically. It's just something I see frequently and picked this moment to fight it lol. I just love MM1. Were the two masters that didn't make it in the two that were in Powered Up?

I've hunted around, and I'm not actually sure. Hardcore Gaming 101 mentions the cutting of two; but I can't find anything that ties the Powered Up guys to it. I spent a while a week or two ago hacking around and trying to figure it out. It is said that a lot of things cut out did make it into Rockman 2... so it's entirely possible that the Robot Master bosses that were pulled ended up there.

For me though, it's the Rockman 1 Famicom cart all the way. I love the Inafune art on the sticker.

Yeah that wouldn't surprise me at this point.

Grew up on Top gun, felix the cat,TMNT and this tank game that i forgot but i have great memories of i.

Iron Tank? I've always felt that game was fairly underrated.

When you look back on it, oldskool SNK loved the vietnam/jungle military theme.

Nope, one of the bosses that was slated for the original Rockman was named "Bondman". He'd attack with a glue based weapon but was cut due to memory constraints I believe. Inafune thought of using him in Powered Up, but decided against it and instead created two new Robot Masters and left Bondman as a Megaman urban legend. Its detailed in the awesome Megaman Complete Works book.

Dammit now I have to get all the rockmans don't I?
I'll wait until I've finished some Konami subsets I think. Or maybe go digging in Japan at the end of the year.

Heya, I'm trying to rebuild an NES collection that I had to sell off when I was unemployed. In doing so, I've collected a lot of common doubles. Anyone here who might be up for some 1:1 - style trading for those? There's tons of commons I don't have yet. My collection is at about 175 unique titles.

Also ended up with a couple of uncommon doubles such as Tecmo Cup Soccer and Monster in My Pocket. I currently have them on eBay as buy it nows but I'm only selling them to try to get more NES stuff, so if anyone needs 'em and has a similar-valued game(s) to offer as a trade, just PM me or something. I'm really only interested in NES for now, maybe SNES if it's something I played in my childhood.

UGC should fit most Famicom carts, right? Aren't they more or less be the same dimensions as Genesis carts?

I use UGC cases. Fami carts are a little smaller than Genesis ones in them though, and rattle around a little. I'm planning on getting some rubber feet to hold them in place more securely.

Rescue Rangers 2 and Duck Tales 2 are my personal NES holy grails. Hope to get them both someday.

Speaking of the Disney/Capcom NES stuff, Darkwing Duck has seriously jumped up in the last few years. I remember it going for around $20-25 at the most back in 2012 or so. Auctions are ending at $50 for loose copies these days.

Rescue Rangers 2 and Ducktales 2 are pretty meh in comparison to the originals. The only thing Ducktales 2 improved on is the controls for doing the Pogocain.

Do you know of Famicom custom cases, like the Bit Box or Universal Game Case?

BitBox will be doing Genesis/Famicom eventually. I think they're just trying to figure out how to do the nonstandard Genesis carts like the EA ones in the same box.
