NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

Batman Returns costs too much. I know because I'm after a complete copy!

December is summer in half the planet, so hey you can do any beach or summer themed games too.

Are you thinking of Return of the Joker? Batman Returns doesn't seem too bad even complete.

No.

I don't do cart only and a decent boxed Batman Returns will cost me AUD$100. I collect Konami games and have been looking for a while.

Actually here's a request for future games choices: US only releases (like Monster Party) are the most expensive for anyone from any other country. Worldwide releases are obviously obtainable everywhere, Japanese sellers have cheap worldwide postage, But when it comes to the US, even non GSP listings often have ridiculously inflated postage costs, and GSP sends prices through the stratosphere.

Edit: not to mention GSP is a nightmare to Australia. I've had things take over a month, they circle the US for two weeks and the package gets more beat up at each stop. It finally leaves the country, then it's delivered by 'FedEx Budget' locally, who hold onto the parcel for up to a whole week because eBay didn't spring for regular delivery price. On top of that they only deliver in business hours when you're not home, so you get a card to pick it up at their depot. $30 postage for an NES game that takes 4 weeks to arrive and then I have to drive 20 minutes to get it. And the parcel is worn out from a month of handling (often with damaged items because it was packed by morons - padded bags for cardboard box games wtf). Never again.

Okay, so maybe we should bring in a new rule, the game should be available in at least two regions? So US and EU, or US and JP etc.

I'm not against requiring the game to be available in multiple regions but the more restrictions we place on this, the fewer games we're going have as available selections. Just food for thought.

Expecting to be able to buy and own a complete copy of every game we decide on sounds unrealistic without an unlimited budget.

I'm interested in playing good games or important games worth playing. I'm not going to restrict my nominations.

Yeah, I guess, for now we should just leave it as it is. It still has to go through a voting phase after nominations, so let people decided then. I'm a people pleaser, which is my major flaw :P

Started playing Monster Party today on my Analogue Nt.

Goddam NES games are hard. Spent a lot of time getting through the first stage. This is some kind of Dark Souls predecessor, with a lot of different enemies you need to observe and learn the attack patterns for. Generally surprisingly enjoyable. iPhone is great for passwords, I remember how my hand scribbled passwords never worked as a kid.

Waaaaaaaay too expensive. You can get an official stock AV Famicom for cheaper than that.

With that one, if the mod is done well it will be literally the same circuit as the AV Famicom, so it will be good however.

Bear in mind, I have that mod and it was done super poorly resulting in very bad jailers. Don't be like me. Go with the official AV Famicom instead.

AV Famicoms are nearly identical to the originals other than the missing microphone functionality. You also won't be tethered to your system with such short controller cables.

I actually don't like how the Top load NES/ AV Famicom looks though so I'm not really considering them at all. The initial Famicom plan was to get it and have it RGB modded right away, but that's not too viable for me atm so was trying to compromise for a composite modded one I can use with my XRGB-mini while I build up funds for it to be modded but since that seems to be hit or miss I guess I can just look for a cheap non-yellow RF only one for now and just have it sit aside.

Well as I said, if done correctly it is exactly the same circuit as the AV Fami.

Yeah I can't really tell from the ebay listings but I suppose I can take a chance since having an imperfect composite modded one would be preferable to something I can't use at all until I pony up for the RGB mod.
I've been eyeing a Sweet Home cart and I've been wanting to replay it for a while so I might just crack on getting one + Sweet Home when my check gets in next week.

Well my work is done, I finally have gotten Akumajou Densetsu for all of my friends and not spent over $30 each time. I'm pretty proud of myself on that one.

This discussion about choosing a console is relevant to me, too. I have a toaster NES I've used for years as a I built my collection. Since I got an HDTV in 2009 it's been pushed to a closet. I am definitely getting a FM soon so I can play in my living on my big plasma TV. But getting the FM and the RGB mod at the same time is REALLY expensive. I have decided that I'll just live with composite via FM for now and save for the mod.

BUT! My collecting roadmap includes a FC and FDS. So I am thinking that an RGB AV FC would be preferable to spending the money to mod my toaster. I know D.Lo has described an RGB modded AV Fami as the "best NES" you can own and I agree, based on what I've read and seen. But I have a hard time giving up that classic form factor I grew up with.

I'm guessing I'll keep the NES but retire it to a closet when I get my FC and FDS. Good thing I already have a fair number of games because I won't have any money left to buy them after getting all this damn hardware!

Ebay is awesome! Have been using it for years. I hate it when people spread lies on the internet! Smh

lol wat

I totally get where you're coming from. I lucked into a great deal on an FDS and AV Fami after modding my newer toaster NES. I considered selling the toaster to fund the AV Fami mod, but I've heard people have trouble with random games. I'm not sure it has 100% compatibility with all US games. Gonna look more into it before I make a decision.

If you're only going for one system to rule them all, it's gotta be the AV Famicom. Best design and function all around.

I'd love to have both and I think I can pay for both mods over time. But a FM, an AV Fami, two RGB mods and an FDS .... that's a shit ton of money. Welcome to retro gaming in 2015....

Even without an RGB mod AV Famicom has great picture quality. Hell, even on my Samsung big-screen TV it looks great, although I'm gonna get a Framemeister in the future as well (and my friend did a small mod that improved the graphical quality of the AVF).

The point is, after suffering with PAL games for so long, I bought the AV Famicom, and it was the right choice. I still have my PAL NES for those text-heavy games or ones with no japanese/US release or when the best option for a game is simply the european version. But most of my purchases since have been Famicom games, and I did talk about converting some of my PAL releases into a big wad of cash, buying the japanese equivalents and still having most of the money left over.

What games would fit this category?

Famicom/NES composite is pretty good in general, but it really depends on the game. It looks really bad in Dragon Quest games, the trees in the overworld have horrible artifacting while the screen scrolls.

Believe it or not there are a couple. Some good games only got an EU release, and there are quite a few EU/JP releases, so EU is the only way to play in english.

Lol yeah was about to say.

I've been on eBay for 15 years and it has gotten worse every year, the horrors of the global shipping program are the worst part so far too. They've completely reconfigured to try and be Amazon, selling new stuff to morons not old stuff to collectors, which is bad for buyers and sellers of vintage stuff.

You mean dot crawl (on a fixed pixel display)? Yes that's why I had to get into scalers.

Wish I liked the way the AV Famicom looked more but maybe I should just go for it anyways since the games will look nice which is more important.

My ultimate plan is a pimped up OG Famicom too. But the AV Fami isn't particularly ugly? Maybe a bit boring?

yeah, Mzo showing off his lovely FDS at my place a little while back really reinforced how great the fami looks over AV vs our NES on composhit, world of difference there

When I get an AV Fami, I'm considering a custom paint job for the original red and white flavor, or maybe a red and black job to match the FDS... Just more $$$$, so what the hell.

I don't think so. I don't really know the right word to describe it. I'm running it through composite to my FM and it's just... annoyingly bad when I play DQ and that's about it. Which sucks since most of my Famicom games are DQ.

yeah that would be dot crawl. Try Contra level 1 and look at the trees.

Very much trying. That's how I got my Wii U a few years ago. Ebay of all places had a really good deal with 3 games, probably the best priced bundle at the time. I blame the ever expanding Black Friday (week, month, etc) for ebay's transformation.

Picked up Power Blade and Chip 'n Dale today.

Rescue Rangers I can tell is a quality title but the way enemies move keep catching me off guard as well as it being hard sometimes to tell what you're able to stand on. Not sure if it's better in co-op, but so far I'd rather be playing my copies of Ducktales/2.

Power Blade is definitely going to be a fun time, but like Gargoyles Quest 2, Nova himself feels like he moves a tad slow for an action game IMO.

Bought Jackie Chan's Action Kung Fu a couple of weeks ago after wanting it for quite a while. After the James and Mike video I figured I shouldn't wait any longer in case the prices start going up like the last time they covered a game I really wanted (Demon's Crest). Really fun from what I've played so far, and the music is great.

Earlier tonight I bought a copy of Shadow Warriors (Ninja Gaiden). Happy to finally add that.

Power Blade is a really fun game. I haven't played it for a while though, need to do that soon. I want to get Chip n Dale some time too, looks just like my kind of game.

When people ask for good NES games that are still in affordable price range, I tend to suggest Power Blade. It's fun, it's relatively short for a quick run-through, and it's got one of the kick-assest soundtracks in the NES library.

And it's one of the few cases where the western version changes actually made the game better IMO.

Funny to see the talk about Chip & Dale here just now, I picked it up together with Monster Party because I remembered I loved it when I was a kid. It's still a fantastic game, super responsive, fun, more challenging than Duck Tales. Definitely should consider it for a monthly. Power Blade sounds awesome too.

Rescue Rangers is decent, but the Co-Op mode is where the game really shines.
