NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

We could go back and forth about the design of TMNT all day. I simply just don't enjoy how most of the open world is a diversion. Opinions on that may vary. My absolute biggest problem with TMNT was the fact that 2/4 of your characters are practically useless, and that healing items/1ups were insanely difficult to come by. I think the game has some great ideas, but there's enough wrong that it crosses the border into unfun territory for me.
Agreed with this, well said.

I nominate Rygar.
I have yet to play it and would nominate that, lol.

On the bright side it's not SNES...yet.

Not yet!

I'd imagine that as the median price goes up, so too, does our floor.

Yep, probably has to be that way.

Well...going to have to beat the first one some day...

EDIT: Startropics 1 should count for future votes right?

What about Startropics 2 for next month? That game is also cheap, and probably much less played than the original. Would be fun to do.

We can vote on Startropics for January's group, if you can remind me next month. I think starting on the first game and not Zoda's Revenge would make the most sense, but if people want to start with 2, I won't argue it.

Rygar was one of the first games I ever owned. My father actually beat it years before I could. It's a classic and an excellent choice.

Having said that, I still vote for Pinball Quest.

Damn, there are just so many NES and FC hidden gems out there. Been collecting for years and have had a renewed interest in the deeper library all this year and I'm still finding them. I'm just now realizing how rad Super Spy Hunter looks. Seems like an 8-bit shmup on a roadway (and not at all related to Spy Hunter - just a license slapped on top of an original Sunsoft title for Western markets).

I love Super Spy Hunter/Battle Formula.. music is top notch, game is just fun to play.. and some really neat little graphic effects here and there, like dropping off of one road onto another and the pseudo scaling effect it has. I was lucky enough to have bought it as one of the first games when I started collecting NES games again.

That's why it's the best console of all time.

It ruled for longer than any other console and in a very experimental era, so there is a huge breadth of ideas on there, and more breakthoughs than anywhere else.

I had been cleaning carts with alcohol and q-tip and having so-so results. I tried the eraser method. Story checks out. Oddly satisfying as well. You can see the half that was cleaned with eraser.

Looks good. A white (non colored) art supply eraser is best, correct? Alcohol and q-tips always works really well for me but YMMV.

In the TMNT pool.

As a kid, I hated the game. I was in complete disappointment and felt burned after buying it being a turtles fan boy.

Grown up, I find it's the turtles game that holds up the best. Why? Because the others are too repetitive and easy. Require no skill. The original NES TMNT was hard, took patience, good timing, and could easily get you sweating. I remember last time I played practically jumping out of my seat with a sense of a accomplishment on some levels, let alone beating it. Beating the other TMNT games was just a normal every day thing, every kid and all my friends have done it. Saying you beat TMNT on NES is a bragging right, jaws drop.

I have been using the eraser method for years on all my cartridge based games and it has worked great. I use 70+ alcohol to clean and loosen any stuck on dirt first before using the eraser on the contacts.

The first Konami Ninja Turtles is the way it is because it used a modified version of the Getsu Fuma Den engine. It even got a similar name on its original Japanese release: Gekikame Ninja Den.

I managed to get a boxed copy of Gekikame Ninja Den cheap, which is a miracle as it's worth a fortune.

le's go back in time 2 years and play some $10 Shatterhand

I paid $4 for a loose-cart copy of Shatterhand in 2012. Its price spike must have been recent; I don't think that was an incredible deal at the time...

I don't know if it's no relation, though... the concept is very Spy Hunter-like, just made into even more of a shmup than Spy Hunter was. Putting the Spy Hunter name on the game made sense, it is a similar kind of game. And yeah, it's pretty good too... very hard, though.

You need SOME skill to beat TMNT II or III on the NES. IV on SNES or HH on Genesis just about anyone can beat, but the NES beat 'em ups are tougher. Beyond that, though, difficulty and quality are not related; a game is not better just because it is harder...

I say start with the first game since...

well i've never played either.

I have a few hi-def NES and with the help of Peagles in New Zeland; I'm getting some BLW mods for them. I bought about 20 NES games the last couple weeks, one set was TMNT1-3.

I buy them from someone who opens the carts and cleans/polishes them, I assume I will need to also use the eraser trick at some point.

I really want to try TMNT1, I might go back and forth between Zelda 1 and TMNT 1. I'm not sure how long the controllers will last with me throwing them on the floor in frustration, but I did find some new OEM old stock NES controllers on ebay for $30 a pop. Straight from Japan they are $50.

I was surprised the first time I saw Fuma swing a sword. I was like, "That's Leonardo."

Holy crap, this is not correct. Beating them without dying or using a continue definitely takes skill.

Stop throwing your controllers!

And stop signing your posts. :|

Well, I don't remember if I'm the one who threw the controllers or my sister, I know someone was throwing them - but they used to hold up anyway.

I just bitboxed the games I'm giving with their hi-def NES!

They did a good job making the bitboxes; I'll say they're not perfect but given the cost they do the job as expected.

I didn't want to work on the UGC dremel/cutting out just to fit an NES cartridge. I'm happy with the outcome! Now I just need to work on printing/cutting my own collection out.

yeah, i borrowed my brother's dremel and got good with it, but it's not ideal! and if you can afford the bitboxes, they're clearly better looking. i had about 30+ games i wanna say, and more than that for SNES so that was what i went with.

don't go cheap on the inserts! i mean, print on regular stock (if they're anything like UGC's, the plastic sleeve is glossy enough to give it a legit look) but i printed from a work printer and the colors were butt. spent a bit more at kinko's and it was totally worth it!

Good points.

So far I'm user a laser printer with something other than legal copy paper that I'm printing on. I'd say once again it's not perfect but it's better than I expected, so good enough for me.

I haven't gotten into SNES yet, I don't know how to get HDMI out with it yet - sounds like I might need the framemeister/etc. For now I will concentrate on an NES collection for basically all the games I couldn't beat when I was a kid.

I'll try again as an adult and likely fail, although I did get pretty far in Battletoads on Rare Replay - but I was cheating with the 10 second replay setting.

I heard the NES advantage rules for games like Ninja gaiden/etc.

I BOUGHT A FUCKING ADVANTAGE CAUSE I DONT KNOW

JOYSTICKS UP IN THIS

ITS GOOD ENOUGH FOR THE STATUE OF LIBERTY, ITS GOOD ENOUGH FOR YOU
love that stick, got a few of em - wish my SNES advantage still worked!

love my framemeister but it's not cheap - if your set can somehow still do S-video, it's not a bad signal at all! i forget if a component option is out there yet or not as well.

I was playing contra with it earlier hoooly crap.

I guess cause I haven't played on much console joystick controllers but man I love it. It is sturdy and pretty nice.

Can you connect 2 NES advantages to the system? I noticed it has a player 1/player 2 switch on it, so it makes me think it's taking both controller ports up.

Yes, the two ports are optional so you can play 'taking turns' two player games like SMB on one stick without unplugging.

You can use two of them on the console fine.

Here are the modded hi-def NES for Christmas! I didn't replace the cover for the 2nd one yet. After the BLW mods arrive I'll show my sister how to mod hers before modding the other.

Here are the OEM NEW Oldstock NES controllers I found on eBay. If you get them from a USA seller, they're usually about $50 each - Japan's new stock is around $28, if you can find them.

I got a couple of these from Peagles today, straight from New Zealand in just over 1 day shipping (helps that it was going back in time to get to California, lol):
