NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

Setup looks good time me.

I'm not going to be able to get Rygar in time annoyingly. Hoping for a landslide Shatterhand victory in the voting next month

Thanks folks. I guess I was referring to the location - the basement of my 90 year old house. The equipment is certainly legit! Gotta get a FM if I want to play on my comfy couch on the big plasma set.

My ghetto retro setup. Better than collecting games and never playing them, I guess.

Also, Rygar is weird.
Better than mine. My rinky dink apartment isn't big enough for a TV, couch. A desk, chair, and bed barely fits. So, I'm stuck on classic controller with OpenEMU.

Good news: Rygar arrived today safe and sound (well relatively since the USPS guy just knocked once and left the box on our porch).

Bad news: F1 Challenge for Sega Saturn is marked as delivered in / at mailbox, but is no where to be found... Granted it was only 4 bucks...it was still complete.

I've sometimes had USPS deliveries marked as delivered but nowhere to be found, only for them to magically show up in my mailbox/at my door the following day.

Ordered an ntsc Rygar yesterday, will hopefully get it before the end of the month so I can participate again.

Two quick questions I'm not sure where else to ask.

Is this a decent deal for a AV-modded Famicom and eight games?

Where's the most up-to-date place for resale values? I'm thinking of selling my N64 and putting it into the Famicom I've linked above.

Well, the games are good which is more than you can say normally on eBay bundles, but I would still get the AV Famicom, if only because you can use normal euro controllers on it. I dislike the dogbone not only because of the short wire but the placement of B and A buttons. my2c

Yeah, I have no idea what they were thinking when placing the B and A buttons on that thing. I simply can not use it.

They were thinking 'This is how we do it from now on, see Game Boy, SNES, GBA etc'.

Basically while you hold an NES pad like this, with the tip of the thumb on B, and you bounce the 'ball' on A:

You hold a Game Boy like this, hovering over both buttons, and leaning left and right to hit each or both:

So go Game Boy style:

Right, making games with dash - like freaking Mario - impossible to play properly. Had they at least had the angle go from up left to down right like how you control in Super Mario World, it wouldnt have been a problem. But what they went for is just atrocious imo.

Conker is worth $80+? Goddamn, I might even have the box for that one somewhere.

Loose prices are without box/manual.

CIB are complete in box. New is obviously sealed.

If you're surprised by $80, you will be surprised at the price of other NES/SNES/N64 games. I'm sure I'm not the only one who wished they held onto their own personal collection, but you can't blame a child for wanting to upgrade to the next system!

I just spent $175 for Chrono Trigger and FF3 loose. CT is $110.

Works fine for me.

Never play a Game Boy or Game Boy Pocket or Game Boy Color or Game Boy Advance or Game Boy Advance SP or Game Boy Micro or Game Gear or PC Engine GT or Neo Geo Pocket?

Of course, but always hated the controls. Especially for games that use dash, like I wrote. Its not that its unplayable, it is that the alternative was so much better!

I was wondering whats a good controller to get with a famicom? I was looking at a joycard since I saw it on GCCX and it has a nice Hudson bee.

I've just been through searching and purchasing a FC and FDS on eBay and I would say this bundle is high in price. They ARE good games but they are also all games that have come west so they're not exactly special as FC games.

I'd also suggest looking at an AV model. But perhaps you really want the original FC experience? Either way you can get them cheaper.

I agree that Game Boy Style works totally fine, and I've never had an issue dashing or anything like that...

That being said, I tend to hold my controllers "keyboard style" wherever that's a possibility, using my middle and index fingers to hit A&B. I have no idea where I picked up this habit. A lot of times I'll even shift my grip in the middle of gameplay.

That might alleviate some of the pain from playing NES games for hours on end.

I do that for Hyper Sports/Track and Field and Tekken.

I've always placed my thumb at an angle and rocked it left and right, even with the original square controller. The angles Game Boy and dog bone buttons never bothered me. Love the dog bone.

I usually hold pads like that for some fighting games or some games that have a weird button config but no remapping. It's usually why I prefer sticks for fighting games overall besides not murdering my thumb.

I'm not terribly interested in the AV Famicom because it's so sterile and boring looking. The original Famicom hardware is Nintendo's iconic hardware from the 80s and the one I'd much rather have.

What price should I be paying for an AV-modded Famicom that's gotten a bit of a refurbishment? (With a few games?)

I've sold a few SNES games back in 2014...nothing really of value outside of Secret of Mana.

SOM is like $55 now, hasn't changed much.

I bought Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, FF2, FF3, Super Mario RPG, Super Metroid, Street Fighter 2, and TMNT 4 for $400 just a couple days ago. TMNT4 is worth a lot now, too. Both Chrono Trigger and TMNT 4 doubled value in 3 years.

I think I sold it for $45, so no big deal. I had gotten it from a friend years back along with a bunch of other SNES carts that he didn't want anymore. I wasn't terribly interested in Secret of Mana and at the time it at recently made its way to the Virtual Console, so if I ever really feel the need to play it I can do it that way.

I also sold some lesser games...stuff like a few Mortal Kombats, Wheel of Fortunes, and a Mahjongg game.

I've been developing some Oculus Rift (simple) VR games on the side, and playing NES games with only 2 buttons helps me get into the mindset of coding simpler games with limited input and how they can still be fun. I actually feel like I could code an Adventures of Lolo game in VR and it would be fun. Imagine looking to your side and being frozen by Medusa looking right at you.

I need to be able to put on the goggles, look down and see my round blue body. As opposed to my usual round, fleshy body.

Have you looked at the Sharp Twin Famicom? Just as cool as an original Fami.. I'd say even cooler and has the Floppy disk drive built in. Composite ready so no need for mods and has the same pads as the original famicom. I have an AN-500B, and even though it hardly gets used due to RGB'ing my AV Famicom I can't bring myself to sell it.

Ditto, and that can be done, lol. Just have to place the VR camera on top of his head. Actually that would be a pretty awesome start, considering Lolo is a fairly easy character model to create. I'll just start with a blue sphere for now.

They were thinking 'This is how we do it from now on, see Game Boy, SNES, GBA etc'.

Same, I don't see a problem with either method. No big difference after a while. Y-B instead of B-A threw me off in Super Mario World after a few years of NES Mario (many accidental spin jumps), but only when it was new to me.

Outside the very rare/promo stuff, Nintendo game prices don't surprise me anymore after seeing Neo Geo prices. Now that's insane.

I am certainly glad I held onto my little collection of Nintendo games.

god, i hate that site - mind you, someone else'd do it if they didn't, but it's a ballpark at best, and doesn't factor in certain things.

if im ever at a retro shop and a cashier is looking it up, i tend to leave

yeah, that one shot up years ago - if i had it boxed id sell it for sure!

Check your PM. I have an unmodded one I am looking to sell, if you'd want to send it off to get modded by Baphomet or someone else.

Been playing a bit of Mega Man Minus Infinity again. I want to beat it this time. I got pretty far but then got pre-occupied with other shit and a hard drive crash stopped that venture.

I think Meg Man as a franchise is a little overrated but I really like Minus Infinity because it's so radically different from every other game in the series.

Oh man, it used to bug me when I watched people play Super Mario World, and they only ever spin jumped. Even as a kid, I would (probably rudely) inform people that "B" was for jumping, with "Y" as run playing a big factor.

...Yeah, I was probably an asshole as a kid, haha.

Price charting has it's uses, but yeah it becomes real annoying when people try to use it in RL sales. The fact that it is from only ebay sales where the seller is loosing a cut and there is really good buyer protection are things that sellers never like to take into account.

Of course all the shops around me have their shit priced at a healthy increase from what recent ebay sales are anyway. MAGfest in a month is going to have me just walking around the buyers room being mad as fuck at all the prices between enjoying the arcade cabinets. So just like every year.

Sounds like me at Classic Game Fest in Austin this past year

I'm pretty lucky. My local retro shop is very reasonably priced. He nearly always undercuts Ebay and is open to doing deals on his games. Only bad thing is the selection has got a lot worse recently. Retro gaming has gone mainstream big time.

So protest price charting at every fest? lol I wonder if that would actually work.

Price charting isn't a problem at conventions. The problem at events like that is that everything has a very healthy mark up because they know shit will sell on the hype of the event alone. Been a long time since you could get good deals on second hand products at conventions.

There's a fee for the sellers to have table space at such conventions which can be quite significant, so it's understandable they have to charge a little more. And it's the same with retro stores that have rent and other expenses. But yes even so the prices are often unrealistic at such places. It's often not worth going there to find deals.

Long shot, but why not. Any Michigan GAF NES fans ever stumble upon any NES games with the name SLOCOM (spelling might not be 100%) carved into the back of them? Namely a Mario/Duck Hunt, Zelda 2, or Dragon Warrior?

Are you looking for the exact copies of NES games you owned as a child? @_@
