NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

Price charting isn't a problem at conventions. The problem at events like that is that everything has a very healthy mark up because they know shit will sell on the hype of the event alone. Been a long time since you could get good deals on second hand products at conventions.

Makes sense. I was just looking at some old Neo Geo thread posts, and someone came across a Robo Army MVS cart for like 18 bucks or something at the Portland Expo. And that was last year. Dont want to think what it might go for now (unless the MVS crowd is even smaller than the NA/EU PC engine crowd?)

I have to say I'm still disappointed in Retro Gaming cables UK. The ebay listings didn't have any cables I needed so I went with retro gaming cables UK. It's been 14 days and the item isn't in USA yet. I have less patience than most on stuff like this I think...it stinks to have your console/etc and await SCART cables. Is there nobody else that makes quality cables?

Did you do standard or priority shipping?

Also retro_console_accessories on ebay makes quality scart cables.

I think I'm probably gonna pull the trigger on a AV-modded Famicom via eBay by the end of the day. It's been in the back of my mind for the last few weeks and I think I'd like to start up a little Famicom cart collection.

I blame Game Center CX.

I don't know if I'm bad at side scrolling shooters or if they are designed so that it's damn near impossible to beat them until you get good enough to never take hits and lose weapon power ups. Going through Legendary Wings right now. Getting to the 4th of 5 stages before getting hit consistently now, just got to make the final push through. This game is all right, first time I played it I turned it off after about five minutes. I'm glad I gave it another chance.

International shipping is a disaster right now. I've had a few items take a full month to reach me.

Careful with those. I bought two and both had severe jailbar issues.

Go with a Famicom AV or a modder you trust. I wouldn't just buy a Famicom modded for AV from a random seller.

Most on GAF recommend user Baphomet. PM him for prices or details. He may have one for sale outright, though he mainly does modding, I believe.

...

FYI for the thread: I am selling some NES stuff in BST. Nothing major but a chance to get really clean copies of Mario Bros., Volleyball and Slalom if you're looking for some black box games for your collection.

Looks like the eBay seller I'd be buying from has nothing but good ratings/reviews. Hmm.

Beat Natsume's 2nd Shmup on the NES (given the horrible title) SCAT AKA Final Mission AKA Action in New York. What an unfortunate title...

Anyway, the actual gameplay is fantastic. A great Shmup, great music, controls, graphics, etcetera. Not much to say about it other than it has the quality you expect from Natsume. A great addition to anyone's collection. It's also significantly easier than Abadox (another Natsume Shmup) and like that game it also has infinite continues.

I'm terrible at shmups scrolling in any direction but I can't help buying them since they look so great and are fun to play, especially on the Saturn. I think I have... Layer Section, Darius Gaiden, Gunbird, Sengoku Blade, Sexy Parodius, Salamander deluxe plus pack and ... Radiant Silvergun, but I was lucky to get a copy from a friend in exchange for some NES stuff I didn't need anymore.

For Famicom my favourite is Crisis Force with kick-ass soundtrack and great graphics for the system. Try that one out if you haven't.

This arrived this morning :)

I gave it a quick test and it seems pretty awesome.

Rygar still hasn't arrived though :(

Yeah, a lot of them are designed to be that way. Legendary Wings is incredibly tough if you don't keep all your power ups, the bosses take forever to kill with the standard shot. I'm pretty sure once you reach max level and turn into that awesome flaming phoenix or whatever, any additional power ups stack up as extra hits. Last time I played it I made it to level 4 as well, the difficulty ramps up quite a bit with the spikes and the tucked away enemies that you can't really kill.

Pretty cool game though. The on-foot, side scrolling sections are cool, they kind of remind me of Burai Fighter, which is probably one of my favorite shooters on the console.

Retrogamingcables.uk had only one shipping option. I discussed with them this shipping issue, they said they're looking into another option that could get the cables delivered in 2-3 days, but they though the cost was too expensive for a buyer to pay.

At this point it looks like it will be 21 days since I placed the order, I will not recommend them unless one has patience, lol. I bet I could find the cables I need from retro_console_accessories on ebay and get it sooner - stay tuned! xD

When I got my first few RGB consoles, RGB cables and scart switch... I could not play them properly because I was waiting for Retro UK's scart-to-BNC breakout cable. Gotta be patient.

I'll wait, nothing else I can do at this point, lol. The retro_console_accessories on ebay does not have the cables I'm looking for - that's OK.

I picked up an SNES Mini (modded for RGB support):

Got my first Famicom game in. :) Can't wait till later in the month when I can order my actual system.

Whoever sold it to me isn't to clean though the contacts were filthy.

I wish the NES Rygar was more like the arcade version where it was a straight forward but fast paced platformer...though you died in 1 hit in that version, at least you get extra lives in that one.

I thought the same thing, but the NES version has unlimited lives. It says 'Game Over' and takes you to the title screen, which is especially confusing at the beginning when you're not very far. Once you're past the first area this will be apparent when you restart, as it definitely has checkpoints and you don't lose items you find.

Guys, I almost no death Batman NES...it was a no continue run though. I'll probably no death it around the time Batman vs Superman comes out...but that means I have to play a Superman game as well!!!

Managed to beat the game last night. If you can make it through the fourth level it is actually pretty easy. Mostly because the last level has lots of power ups and you can just keep getting continues to play forever. I'll have to get Burai Fighter, also lifeforce.

Yes Fami games are clipped together, no screws in the vast majority of cases.

Some can be a total bitch to open, and some can not be opened at all without damage (eg Konami standard carts).

How impossible is it to get an Analogue NT nowadays? I just started reading about it and felt like it was worth the price to me, but now I see it's sold out and they don't plan to make more?

I guess I'm wondering if selling preorders has been a thing in here or in the BST thread?

That sounds a bit annoying but I don't imagine I'd have to open carts too often to replace anything though.

How do you get those clipped carts apart, anyway? Clipped-together carts with batteries inside, that's cruel design..

Nintendo style carts you can use a clamp/vice and knife to unlock without damage.

Some are basically impossible to open without breaking at least one tab.

So the music in Rygar actually isnt that bad. Especially Gran Mountain's theme. I cant really say its fitting, but it sounds like something that might have been better as an orchestrated theme today. I've got the manual which actually has somewhat of a map inside, which might help a little. Just realized you can jump on enemies to stun them too.

I've done it without using a continue but I always die at least once on the joker

Screw the Joker!!! I'm taking him down again without dying to him a few months from now.

There's this sweet spot where you can stand where his lightning won't hit you and his gun will miss. I boomerang the shit out of him and try and stay in that area. Trouble is he won't stay still! At least when he's been hit he passes through you. He seems to always beat me on my first attempt for some reason. It's like I need a practice fight. Tough fight. Really great game though

Yep, agreed, I even prefer it over it's sequel Batman Return of the Joker...which is cheap in spots(like 3-1 and 5-1).

Fun fact: the version I have (Famicom) has lots of different music. I don't know if these tracks were lifted from the arcade version or why did they bother to rewrite some of them for western release.

Speaking of Argos no Senshi, I finally managed to beat Ligar with some heavy leveling in the last stage. No speedruns, but I was able to clear a game that I first played as a child so I'm happy. Always thought that it's a much better game than people say and definitely one that's still quite affordable.
