NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

Anyone can recommend where to get Contra from? eBay prices are really high ($50).

I did purchase my Contra from ebay, I paid $40. The loose price on charting is $36. This time last year it was $29. The year before, $23. The year before that, $24.

If you can get a loose good condition copy for $30 or less, I believe that is worth it/valid. I am impatient so I pay a little bit of a premium.

lol, maybe elmalloc is a broke doctor

no patients.

Lol, yeah, I have no patience. I wait about a week looking for good ebay copies. I'm OK with paying $5-10 premium, I know I'm a collector and not as much a gamer these days. I will pay a premium for clean copies, not junk though. Anyway, it's people like me who also raise the value of your existing games...lol

I would like to throw out, i fyou have the means to purchase and use it, a hi-def NES (HDN). It's HDMI out, internally upscaled to 1080p with no lag introduced, and completely digital.

RGB to a framemeister is an analog to digital conversion. There is less noise and no lag introduced with an HDN. The HDN is my favorite retro modded console right now.
This seems perfect, but is there a way to install one in an AV Fami? I don't really want a US NES, just Japanese, mainly because of the FDS.

Our completed list for February 2016 voting is:

1. Startropics (Nintendo)

Nt7NmRs.png

StarTropics is an action-adventure video game released by Nintendo in 1990 for the NES. Unlike most of Nintendo's games, it was never released or intended to be released in Japan. It was released only in North America and Europe, although designed by Japanese designers living in the United States. It was produced, written and directed by Genyo Takeda of Nintendo Integrated Research & Development (who also developed the Punch-Out!! series).

2. Renegade (Technos)

Renegade is an immediate technological predecessor to Double Dragon, and Nekketsu Kōha Kunio-kun, and is the inaugural game in the Kunio-kun series (which includes Super Dodge Ball and River City Ransom). The NES version, developed in-house by Technos and released in 1987 by Taito in North America, is a strong departure from the original arcade game.

3. Trog (Acclaim)

Trog is an arcade game developed by Midway Games and released in 1990. In the game, players control dinosaurs and must collect eggs onscreen while being pursued by cavemen called "trog" (named after the word troglodyte). The NES version, due to its limitations, was scaled down drastically. The arcade version supports up to four players at a time, while the NES version only supports two (only Bloop and Spike are playable, Rex and Gwen were omitted). Much like many NES games at the time, the home versions box art was contracted out to a different company and did not use the arcade game's art.

4. TMNT (Ultra/Konami)

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles[2] is a side-scrolling platform game for the Nintendo Entertainment System released by Konami (under the Ultra Games imprint in the USA and the equivalent PALCOM brand in Europe/Australia) in 1989. Loosely based on the 1987 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series, being released after the show's second season, it is notably one of the first video games based on the property alongside the arcade game (also developed by Konami). which was also released in 1989.

5. Shatterhand (Jaleco)

Shatterhand is a side-scrolling action game for the Nintendo Entertainment System developed by Natsume and published by Jaleco in North America in 1991 and in Europe in 1992. Shatterhand was originally released by Angel (Bandai) in Japan in 1991 as a licensed game for the Family Computer based on the live-action superhero series Super Rescue Solbrain (特救指令ソルブレイン Tokkyū Shirei Soruburein?).

Any Sharp Twin Famicom owners here? I just scored one with a fixed belt drive and am eagerly awaiting it to get here from Japan. Also any good recs for Famicom only games? I do know Crisis Force, Layla and of course some of the RPGs...

Thanks for the advice. I too don't mind paying a premium for convenience (eBay). Probably doesn't help that I live in Canada and shipping adds $12-$15 to the price.

I have an eBay dealer that lives near me in Cleveland, I don't know if that would cost any less to cross the border to Canada. He stocks a ton of NES games, but Contra is harder to come by. I can PM you his ebay store link.

Is this (HDN) available right now? I see videos online but searching around the web I can't find a kit or modding service. I may not be looking in the right place though.

CynicalJedi:
Any estimate on how long until we will be able to purchase a DIY kit?

Game-Tech-US:
Nope, just keep watching this thread, my website, youtube channel, or G+ and Twitter.

Same thread says they're not doing mods right now. Maybe others are and I'm just not seeing it. I have a front loader btw.

I bought 3 through Jason @ http://www.game-tech.us/. I don't know if he has any more available, I bought one through his store on the site - and a couple more through eBay (search for hi-def NES). They were running for $350-$380 a pop based on shell quality.

He sold a TON in December, I think at least 50 auctions if you look at ebay history.

The pixels are very sharp, no noise, no lag. It's really beautiful.

This 12 minute RGBLife Youtube video sold me on it. Compares the HDN (hi-def NES) vs the NES RGB:

Cool, thanks. Yes, I saw that website and the youtube video which is why I was looking around. I checked ebay but only briefly. Thanks!

Hrmm... I wonder if this could be applied to a Twin Famicom. I already have an RGB setup with the Framemeister though so not to sure either way since I already invested in that.
Considering my Dad's 4k TVs he recently got neither being able to do that resolution factors in too. I only have a 1080p monitor with extremely low lag though so it might be fine since I have no intention of upgrading anytime soon.

I've had an A/V Fami and a nice joystick sitting at customs at JFK since Monday. We'll see how long it takes to get out of there. Excited to get my hands on it...

It's here! Arrived today. Guess the Japan Post tracking service only goes as far as US customs. And I have a three day weekend ahead. What timing.

You can actually paste that same tracking # into USPS (if it was handed over to USPS), and you'll get tracking. My SCART cables started to move from Chicago (from UK).

How do you like your Twin Famicom? I am hoping this is gonna be a good, solid pickup that isn't prone to hardware failure.

Still wrestling with the choice of AV-modded HVC-100 or a HVC-101.

I love the retro styling of the 100 and I found an eBay listing for a repainted model plus 8 games for about $140, which seems like a good deal.

Meanwhile the HVC-101 has detachable controllers, but I haven't been able to find quite a good as the deal as the aforementioned model. Hmm.

Well I haven't ordered it yet so I can't say! I'm planning on ordering one in the next week or so though and was considering my options since someone here offered me a RGB modded one and theres this HDMI option which looks pretty nice too.

Fuck it, ordered.

Picked up this "Pro-Recolored" Famicom:

Which the seller was gracious enough to combine with the eight games on his other listing for $145 total.

I probably paid a bit more than I should have, but I really like the idea of owning a perfectly-colored Famicom console.

So excited. Now to do a bit of game shopping.

Edit: I do still want a AV Famicom for collector's sake, but I'll give it a few years. Also I won't have to be concerned about getting a console + game bundle when that time comes. (Though I would like one with its original box.)

So I see that an AV Fami shell can hold the Hi-Def NES mod after all...but where in the hell can you even buy one? Even eBay has nothing to offer.

I found it really funny that they suggest a 5x horizontal scale while in their other NES video they complain that the Wii U virtual console looks "squished" when it does the exact same thing. They even put up a comparison at the end of their settings for the Hi-Def NES right next to the Wii U VC and they have the exact same squished wrong aspect ratio.

I mean yeah it also looks like smeared dark weirdness but their scaling choices really don't sit well with me.

New Fami is so much nicer.

It's so weird how the same shell was used for both the Famicom that upgraded the video output from RF-only and the NES that downgraded the video output to RF-only.

The US one was a budget model, designed for people who couldn't afford the main new system at the time (SNES). So it cut corners to be cheaper for its intended market.

Years later of course it's quite a desirable model, but at the time anyone into Nintendo was all about the SNES.

Famicom works just fine. Now able to test the FDS I got a couple months ago, too, and it also works ... mostly. Getting a few Err. 27s. Looks like I'll try to clean the disk head and then move on to adjustment if needed. Looks like a pain in the ass though. The FDS really does appear to be finicky.

Anyone have experience tweaking these?

With the Famicom on its way, can anyone recommend a 72 to 60 pin adapter so I can play my NES games on it? My 27-year old NES is showing some issues and I feel like the Famicom may be my go-to for both NES and Famicom games if all goes to plan.

I swear by the ones sold by gamedoctorhk, but it seems like they're sold out at the moment. Occasionally, he'll have some with cases already assembled, but you can still purchase a case for it separately. There may be some up on ebay, but typically you'll get the best price on his website. They're not perfect converters (stuff like Castlevania III, Rad Racer 2, and a few others require some modding to the converter to work properly, and all the documentation on the internet about fixing them seems to have disappeared in the past year or two), but 99% of the time, there's no issue.

I have one of these and I heartily recommend it. It's a bit more robust than many other adapters so it's easier to get it out and insert it and the games stand a bit more secure with it. Haven't had any issues with mine.

Doesn't really negate what I said, though.

I've been following this thread on and off for a while, but has anyone ever brought up here that an extremely limited number of official North American toploader NES-101s exist with SNES-to-GC-type AV multi-outs? The story goes that if you bought a NA toploader and called Nintendo's customer service phone line in the mid-'90s to complain that it only had RF out, they would offer to let you mail in the console, and when you got it back, the RF out would be replaced with the multi-out.

Of course, at this point, I believe those are far pricier on eBay than DIY hardware modders' toploader work is, but figured it was relevant.

I drunk bid on eBay.

Won a Felix that I don't recall bidding on. So I get to play that finally.

Been wanting a copy for a while and wish I would have pulled the trigger a year ago. Price is rising for this one. Never heard much talk about it in this thread so some impressions would be most appreciated!

I just read this post, and then went on ebay to see if there was any good deals on a game Im searching, and then I realized I was already the highest bidder on it. Must have been drunk bidding as well!

I basically do buy it now on games on ebay, but only recently did I randomly bid on a mario kart SNES that I thought I wouldn't win, and I did, for $10 less than I had BIN'd for another. I suppose I should be bidding now instead of buying, unless it's a good deal.

Patience is key with ebay. You can definitely get games for much cheaper if you wait for an auction. Research what previous auctions have gone for and don't bid more than that. Although I'll admit that I'll sometimes just go for BIN as well when I just really want a game NOW. Or yeah, if I'm drunk haha.

Regarding Felix, it's a pretty well made game from what I've played. But it's really easy once you get fully powered up. I do like the powerup system though.

If the BIN is reasonable it's fine to go for that. Otherwise either wait until the last 10 seconds of an auction or use bid sniping software if you really want something for a better price.

Also sometimes people let you make offers and 10 to 20% off their asking is usually pretty reasonable.

Yes, I use all the avenues depending on going price, condition and how badly I want a game or item. I usually do BINs on lower prices games and wait for auctions on more expensive stuff.

I just started my retro collection, so I kind of wanted to get a lot of the games "out of the way". It was easy to find good condition FF2/FF3/Chrono Trigger/etc. on eBay for an acceptable price.

Now traversing into Genesis/PS1/Gamecube realm, I am willing to miss out on some auctions and go slower. I think I had about 50 USPS packages deliver within 1-2 weeks. It's getting annoying to track them and be home to bring them inside if its' 0 degrees out. I'm feeling trapped by my new hobby! lol.
