NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

I'll be honest, I don't really want to play through TMNT. So I'm glad it didn't win as well. Probably we will at some point, and at that point I'll become better acquainted with the nuances of Konami's first console crack at these radical warriors. We'll see someday, I suppose.

I'd definitely be on for FC exclusive titles as a side-dish to the main game club pick. If nothing else it'd be a good way of finding out about more of them.

I rather play it around the release of the new TMNT movie that comes out in June 2016.

Got my copy of of I Am Error in the mail today. Holy shit, it looks comprehensive and fascinating. Now, just gotta find the time to read it. I need to finish Extra Lives and then I have this book and Console Wars waiting for me next....

I like the idea and don't mind setting up a second option on the voting forms, but I'd like a roll call of who would want to participate in this beforehand.

Ironically I don't own a Famicom, I just have the converter pieces for my US toploader. I gotta get an actual Famicom and FDS at some point. Just played through Gun Nac last night... gonna make a post about it in the coming days.

Yeah, definitely not trying to muck things up with my suggestion. Just a thought!

You played the FC version of Gun-Nac? Definitely been eyeing that. Shoot em ups feel natural on a Japanese platform in a way...

If anyone is looking for Famicom exclusives I have to mention Crisis Force - one of the best, if not THE best shooter for the system. It really draws the last drops from the system and showcases everything it's capable of. Great graphics, great soundtrack, great game.

Yeah I've been meaning to get it but its price is getting up there... I should really get it before it gets too crazy. That one and Gun Nac are the last two shooters I want for the system. After those I feel like I have all the noteworthy ones.

Excited for Shatterhand!

Confession:
Never heard of Shatterhand before, but it looks awesome.

Thank god too, it deserves it.

Turtles is so underrated. If I can finish it Timu you can waltz though it! Tbh I voted Shatterhand this month though

I hope we all play it one month. As Timu says maybe the new movie will spark some nostalgia and people will vote for it

It's probably worth buying sooner rather than later. If AVGN or someone does it you'd imagine the price will go up even more quickly. Awesome game btw

I just recently got Monster Party and Faxanadu; I can hardly keep up with buying the games! Shatterhand and Solbrain are so expensive, though... :(

TO EVERYONE WHO DOES NOT YET OWN SHATTERHAND

Now is the time to buy it. It's been at about this price for a year or longer. All it's going to take is one famous Let's Player to get the ball rolling and suddenly this is an $80+ cart. That we're doing this now is good -- it's literally the last reliable point for the game to be had at this price. If you're in, don't sleep on it, it could happen any day, at any point. Yes it sounds like fear-mongering, but it wouldn't be the first time this happened.

Shit, I can't afford an NTSC cart for $200 haha Don't get me wrong, I'd love a US copy, but the Famicom version served quite well.

Can we play Tokkyuu Shirei Solbrain as a substitute? Much less cooler protagonist, but other than that I don't think much has changed.

Not quite, one stage is different if I recall correctly.

I guess someone needs to come correct with the facts then haha

I'll state this then: I'd prefer that, if anyone's going to play a Famicom version of a game instead of the NTSC version, that the changes are as minimal as possible.

If it's the only way you can participate, please by all means, do. But when you post impressions, please note the differences between the versions and whether you think the changes were positive or negative.

I would like the game more if the stages after the 1st one were actually fun to play instead of being a pain for the wrong reasons, the game is challenging but not fun challenging like Batman, Ninja Gaiden and Contra...those are games that are fun to play each time!

The PAL version is the same as the NTSC too.

I'll be playing Solbrain as well. Finally an incentive for me to finish the game, since I haven't been able to yet.

If I get good enough at Shatterhand I would love to do a youtube playthrough on it in that month...that means I have to play the hell out of it though just like Bucky O Hare.=p

I would be so down for Splatterhouse. Got the game last month, still didn't put much time in it.

Is there an SFC game of the month club yet? I really like the idea of the GB and FC versions.

There should be for most fairly affordable systems imo. Genesis needs some love.

I have New Ghostbusters. It's great. Never heard of the others. All worth getting?

Dracula is basically Castlevania crossed with Mega Man so yeah. Haven't played Splatterhouse WP, But EDF is pretty good imo. Shooter made by HAL labs.

Whoops I mean SDF. Space Defense Force.

The vast majority of Fami versions changed for NES are pretty similar.

There are a few complete re-dos like Mad City and Magic John and Jackal, but even then the core gameplay is similar enough, they're just semi-sequels or paint jobs.

The vote pushed me to finally get a copy of Shatterhand. I've been meaning to pick it up for months but I managed to nab a nice looking copy with the manual included for $40. Pretty decent deal and puts me at 177 NES games in my collection. I may have a problem, lol.

Also anyone have recommendations for where to get some reasonably priced shelves for games? I live near an ikea but their bookshelves seem a bit deep for games.

So my friend has a copy of Twinbee (Stinger) for the FDS.

Which looks like this everyone on the internet:

$_57.JPG

Except his is blue...?

And we can't find any info on why it's blue. We can't even find a picture of a blue one anywhere online.

Anyone here have any ideas?

(Yes the yellow one is on side A and the blue one is on side B. It's not a clue lol)

That's actually Moreo Twinbee, the sequel. Which is Stinger yes.

It's a disk writer copy, copied onto a late-generation blue disk with the disk-protection metal thing. The disk writer machine also gave you label stickers and a paper manual like a vending machine (though I have read you had to mail in for the manual in some cases?).

Yeah, I forgot to put Moreo sorry.

I don't really understand the difference between the yellow copy and the blue being a disk writer copy. Can you indulge me and explain a little?

Moreo Twinbee has a retail release, which is yellow.

But it was also released as a disk writer copy, which you could copy onto any disk you wanted.

Late in the FDS era, Nintendo moved to blue disks, which also have the metal bracket to protect the disk. Late retail releases (eg 3D Hot Rally) came on blue disks.

So this is likely a late gen retail game, overwritten with Moreo Twinbee.

Bonus: Twinbee 1 was also released on FDS, but it was disk writer only. It's on Side B of my Goonies FDS retail reproduction.

Awesome thanks for the details D.Lo.

Also to whoever recommended Crisis Force on Famicom, yeah it looks awesome. But it's $100!

Oh wow that shot up! It was around $50 when I picked it up a few months back. Hold out for a cheaper copy.

Moreo Twinbee is 3 players at once btw. Put that expansion port to work!

I need to get an RCA Y splitter adapter / cable...

Also if you get a slight audio buzz on certain screens with an RGB'd NES, is it the quality of Scart cable being used, or just something thats present?

Yeah man, I was looking at copies a while ago and was like "Oh I'll get this later" and forgot. Now I'm like... fuck. lol

Everything about the disk system and how they were sold sounds cool as shit. Like how didn't that stuff catch on elsewhere?

Actually Crisis Force is still under $50 on Amazon.jp if you have an account there. Kind of surprising IMO considering the Yen has been rising in value recently.

Well, it probably depends on how Ducktales did. They don't want another "MM9 did good, MM10 did bad" situation I'd imagine.

The situation the gaming industry is in now just makes me so depressed. As a diehard Mega Man fan I'm tempted to buy the Legacy Collection next month just to support the series even though I already have 1-6/3rd Party portable NES and the Anniversary Collection (PS2).

Shit, I can't afford an NTSC cart for $200 haha Don't get me wrong, I'd love a US copy, but the Famicom version served quite well.

To be honest I'd much rather have the Famicom version given the cutscenes. It's minor, but I just can't help but laugh at picturing a shrine maiden becoming a fighter pilot to go and fight evil carrots. lol

holy balls - my grrl got me an N8 for my birthday!! should be here in a week or two

so yeah, when my SNES one arrives, that'll complete the set for me - Genesis (+32x/SMS), NES, SNES & N64, plus my roommate's Turbo. feels good man <3

related: should be down to try some Shatterhand soon! also gonna dive into that fami library goodness

Almost certainly the cable.

RGB is a huge bandwidth signal, and if all three are on strong (which equals a bright screen, especially white) it can bleed into the audio.

Prices of Crisis Force (and Shatterhand!) might rise in the future but for now they're surprisingly stable. I will echo and say that get those while you can - both are great games that will hold their value.

I have a loose copy of both Solbrain and Crisis Force. Usually I collect boxed/CIB (for SNES, MD and Saturn) but USA NES / Famicom is sometimes just too expensive. I have some boxed/CIB but the majority is loose carts. Stuff like Rockman 1/2, RAF World, Crisis Force, Solbrain... just too much for me to get a CIB and in good condition (don't want any dog-eaten boxes).

On the other hand I have made some pretty good deals on games that are still cheap to get CIB, like Kirby, Rockman 5, Argos no Senshi for the Famicom and games like Conguest of the Crystal Palace (thanks to this thread) and Power Blade for NES.

I use Ikea. They are deep, but what I do, is I have the complete copies furthest in, and then the loose copies outside of that. That way i use overall less space and fill out the shelves. I have almost 170 Nes and Fami-games btw :)

Edit: Btw, I dont know when we start nominating games for the march gaming club, but I would hope to be able to nominate the Nes-version of Strider. Never played that, and it looks cool and different enough from the arcade to be worth checking out!

Seems like my go-to seller on eBay for japanese stuff, yamatoku-classic, has raised their shipping prices a lot for Europe. Single game shipping is now 12,85€. It says on their item description that it's due to the fact that they no longer send packages without tracking.

My friends say that combining shipping works but is a bit hit-and-miss but still quite expensive. It's a shame, they had some really good auctions where you could pick up games cheaper than the average, but if the postal fees rise that much, that will offset what you save in the price...

They probably got scammed on something. Ebay almost always sides with the buyers for disputes, especially if there's no tracking.

I've seen some sellers with free shipping for cheap stuff but anything above a certain price requires tracking which is pretty reasonable.

Yes, I understand why they made the change. Probably "lost" a lot of packages, some for real, others not so much. Hopefully the combined shipping will be better than just adding individual prices together. In the past it's been very reasonable.

I like YT for the reason they had auctions, often many copies of a same game ending around the same time, so you can often get a good deal. I will still probably buy but have to be more careful considering the shipping charges.

I've probably paid Yamatoku 20K over the last 10 years lol.

My first Yamatoku buy (on their old account) was in 2004. Real Bout Fatal Fury Special on Saturn!
