NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

I caved and bought a copy of Crisis Force last night when one popped up for lower than the usual. Hopefully it's as good as it looks.

The AV Fami and stick I just bought were from Yamatoku. I tried to request combined shipping but didn't get a response after a few days. I but the bullet and paid both fees. It then shipped quickly (together) and was well packed so I guess it was worth it. The initial prices were quite good and the items in great shape.

It looks and sounds great but it's waaay too easy, which is a shame.

This increases my interest. I suck at shooters.

I've bought from Yamatoku a few times in the last year and I've always had to wait about one week to receive the combined shipping invoice.

I also just purchased a Famicom from them, but it's the original version. :)

How does $50 sound for a good-looking loose copy of Akumajou Densetsu?

To be honest I'd much rather have the Famicom version given the cutscenes. It's minor, but I just can't help but laugh at picturing a shrine maiden becoming a fighter pilot to go and fight evil carrots. lol

Yeah, the cutscenes are hilarious. Frankly, I wish I could read them. But then that's my fault at this point for not knowing Japanese.

goddamn i wish i had tracking on this N8, picking up a memory card today or tomorrow

Seems like my go-to seller on eBay for japanese stuff, yamatoku-classic, has raised their shipping prices a lot for Europe. Single game shipping is now 12,85€. It says on their item description that it's due to the fact that they no longer send packages without tracking.

yeah, was looking at some Saturn stuff and saw he did this for us US guys too, shame

I've probably paid Yamatoku 20K over the last 10 years lol.

fucking hell

Just beat Blaster Master for the first time a couple nights ago. Awesome game, great soundtrack. A friend of mine had it when I was kid but we had no idea where to go, so besides beating the first boss we would just wander around until we died.

I think I'm going to look into grabbing a boxed copy.

I will play BM tonight based on this review.

Almost certainly the cable.

RGB is a huge bandwidth signal, and if all three are on strong (which equals a bright screen, especially white) it can bleed into the audio.

Guess I need a better one then. The one im using I just had extra from when I bought an Omega CMVS off neo geo forums back in the day. Came with scart and component. I had one from that one ebay seller Retro Game Accessories, but it only output a distorted image like this:

Are there any better sellers aside from her or that UK site? Or did that just happen to be a busted cable? Was advertised as having boosted sync

Thinking of grabbing Lagrange Point and having it translated. Anyone play it? I know the soundtrack is amazing, but how's the game overall?

I actually have a translated cart of that, but I haven't played it yet. I should get on that at some point.

Man I want Gimmick so bad but the price. ):

I tried over and over to get them to use ebay's combined invoice feature to no avail once. They used to have a feature on their website that would allow you to combine shipping on all your completed listing across both yamatoku accounts, but that feature seems to have been deleted from their website between back in November when I last used it and today.

Rather tempted to pick up the original Rockman titles for my Famicom. Someone is selling a package of all six games for $120 + $17 for shipping. That doesn't seem terribly bad considering the cheapest I'm seeing VI is $35 and the cheapest the original game seems to go for is $40, so that's $62 for the remaining four, or $20 and some change each for the rest.

Decisions decisions.

Edit:

Just picked out individual "Buy It Now" listings (limiting it to US sellers for ease of use):

Rockman: $48.34
Rockman 2: $26.25
Rockman 3: $18.95
Rockman 4: $17.95
Rockman 5: $17.95
Rockman 6: $34.18

$163.63

Rockman: $48.34
Rockman 2: $26.25
Rockman 3& 4: $27.74
Rockman 5: $17.95
Rockman 6: $34.18

$154.47

Yep, seems like the six-pack may be the way to go.

Anyone here played Werewolf: The Last Warrior? Any good?

The JP boxart is so beast

First 2,3 levels are pretty good but then the difficulty kicks in. It starts to resemble I Wanna Be The Guy in a bad way. Too bad, I like the idea and it's a crazy enough game that it's maybe worth playing for a bit. But I wouldn't put down a ton of money on.

If anyone is looking for Famicom exclusives I have to mention Crisis Force - one of the best, if not THE best shooter for the system. It really draws the last drops from the system and showcases everything it's capable of. Great graphics, great soundtrack, great game.

Yeah, it's on my list. Most games on that list are stupid expensive though...

My friends say that combining shipping works but is a bit hit-and-miss but still quite expensive. It's a shame, they had some really good auctions where you could pick up games cheaper than the average, but if the postal fees rise that much, that will offset what you save in the price...

This explains why they refuse to give me SAL as a shipping option. I thoght it was only when the items' value were over $100. Actually when I now read the items' description-pages, everything is still like before! Nothing has changed. So wtf is going on? I have now sent them three invoice requests, stating that I will not pay overprice for shipping when the item pages clearly indicated that I could choose SAL shipping, like before. I have bought hundreds of games from them.

Also, last month they cancelled one of my items and resold the same item! Well, to be more clear, they "accidentally" sold the same item three times, and (SURPRISE!) cancelled my order. You can try and guess if my winning bid was lower or higher than the others.

It was fun while it lasted, and I got some great deals, but I think I'm now done with them.

EDIT: so yeah, if someone could give me a link or a picture where I could see the new changes, because I can't find them and Yamatoku's communication is a joke.

You played the FC version of Gun-Nac? Definitely been eyeing that. Shoot em ups feel natural on a Japanese platform in a way...

I'd highly suggest the Japanese version of Gun-Nac. It does have some menus that I made some notes for myself to help navigate through, but the lack of censorship makes up for it - one particular level has you fighting flying cigarette boxes that shoot cigarettes at you. It's hilarious.

Yeah we got a lot of laughs out of this game. Did they censor that much in the US version? I guess I'm glad I got the Famicom cart then.

They made an NES shaped cart with the expansion audio, but im not sure about fami shapes:

Man, these guys have some really interesting stuff. Are most of the Mario games just ROM hacks (except for All Night Nippon)? I see a whole lot them are FC-only titles. In those cases, I'd probably rather just have the real thing since I own the console. I'm not into bootlegs and hacks (I don't even have interest in owning unlicensed NES games from back in the day) but if there are some that are well-regarded I would consider it. Just never hear talk about them in this thread.

Yeah im not a hack kinda guy either, so I wouldnt really know if any of them are good. when it comes to fan translations, i'd rather have the actual game cart with the translation flashed to it, but with Gimmick and Hebreke, the alternatives are just too expensive or hard to find imo.

On that note, this is the game I was talking about earlier:

I need to figure out how to fix that label one day...aside from super glue.

Thanks, kind of intriguing. The US version seems to be dirt cheap so I'll check it out.

And yeah, the stage 1 theme rocks

I've played a handful of Castlevania hacks, I kind of wish there was more talk about hacks in general. if only because it's kind of hard to tell which ones are decent and which ones are terrible when barely anyone has played them.

Yeah that level replaces seemingly every thing with generic space ship stuff. I recall some other changes I noticed in other levels, but I can't recall exactly what they were.

Unless you're one of those folks that needs everything to be original, you might be best off trying to get a high quality scan of that label and have it reprinted somewhere.

Considering how im cool with fan translation repros, I think im about 50/50. I'd rather have originals if I can.

These carts are really interesting. A little bit of NES DNA in them. The Punch-Out!! FC cart has a similar shell.

I think something might be wrong with my cart or it just doesnt work too well with the converter. It works great, no freezing or anything, but some of the sound effects are really muted compared to others.

I'm wondering about the FDS rabbit hole, and if it's worth falling down. Are they really temperamental machines or is it always due to those belts? Are the exclusives worth the hassle for most of you here?

^Looks nice. What's in that little SMB box below the cartridge?

I hear they work perfectly after belt replacement.

That is one nice looking Famicom, NOLA. The controllers look mint. The pic with the GBA is sexy. What carts came with?

And do you have, uh, a Super Mario bedspread? Not that there's anything wrong with that ...
I have some Mario PJ pants

I actually just bought one. I have VERY limited experience so far - like about 30 minutes total spent with about 6 or 7 games. This one supposedly has a new belt and it does work. Most of the games seemed to work fine during my limited testing but a couple had graphical glitches and at least one wouldn't read at all. When I get time I am going to try to clean and calibrate the disk head.

It was listed as a "Pro-Recolor" console, which meant it was supposedly repainted to look as close to the original color as possible. I assume that means the controllers got new decals as well, though I could be wrong.

The seller had some consoles that looked like they were in really good shape as well...very little discoloration as the Famicoms tend to get...but I thought I'd just play it safe and pay a bit more for the recolored one, because I wanted it to be as white as possible. :P

It came with Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario USA, Yoshi's Cookie, Yoshi, Dr. Mario, Mario Bros., and Mario Open Golf.

It worked out pretty well because outside of SMB, SMB3, and Yoshi, I actually don't have any of those other titles in my NES collection from my childhood.

And hell yes that's a Mario bedspread. There wasn't Mario Kart bedding when I was a kid so I'm making up for lost time. (Plus is makes a nice backing for eBay auction photos.)

Beat Ninja Gaiden for the first time. Tough game late on but so good. How are it's sequels?

mvd06gA.jpg
Congrats, great game as well and one of my favs on the NES.

2 is awesome but easier in aspects.

3 is really hard, like one of the hardest on the system, I can't no death it like I did with the 1st 2. Japanese version is way easier though.

Play the sequels!
