NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

I hope this distribution method does well for them. Bravewave has expressed interest in releasing famicom carts containing original music by composer Keiji Yamagishi (of Ninja Gaiden & Captain Tsubasa fame) on cartridge as well.

I had heard about that. I certianly hope that comes to pass as I would gladly pay for it. I'm hooking up everything to my capture card right now, too lazy to hook it up to the TV atm.

Nominees for March 2016
  1. Mega Man 3
  2. Kickle Cubicle
  3. The Guardian Legend
  4. Deja Vu
  5. Strider

I'll get a post together and put up a voting link soon!

So be it! We'll open voting when we reach five. Please remember that if a title was nominated last month, it can not be nominated this month. That means no Renegade, Trog, Startropics or TMNT.

  1. Mega Man 3
  2. Kickle Cubicle
  3. The Guardian Legend
  4. Deja Vu
  5. ???

I already nominated Strider a few pages ago, dont know if it counts.

Ah shit.

Ok we already had 5. Jackal will be next month. Sorry!

Im fine either way though, might be a bit cheating to nominate in advance? Really looking forward to it - and Shatterhand - anyways though :) Ive eve ordered controller extenders (recommended in this thread) for maximum enjoyment going forward!

Next on my lesser known, possibly mediocre NES action games list is Sword Master. The emphasis on boss fights seems interesting enough and it looks/sounds pretty good too. Anyone here played it?

And damn, the US version seems to be pretty rare and obscenely priced.

I am totally down to replay Shatterhand, great game. I'm not too keen on the robot buddies but it's still an excellent game.

I own it, picked it up during the EB Games/Gamestop clearances back in the day. It takes some patience (at least for me) but once you learn how your character moves and fights it really is a unique action game. It is somewhat similar to the old Taito arcade game Gladiator, if you have ever played that.

It's totally fine with me to have Strider, but I think going forward we should only accept nominations after OnPoint declares the ballot open for nomination entries.

Did this thread come back from Community? Thought it went over there last year sometime. Anyway, thanks for moving it back, always forget to go over there.

Excited to finally finish Shatterhand. Picked it up last year and played a little bit, but keep getting distracted by other things. Will make this a goal for the month.

And if voting is opened, going to say Strider. Plus it alphabetically comes between Shatterhand and TMMT (which you guys seem to want to be the game)

I agree a general rule makes sense.

Shhh, dont remind the mods!

So this is what came in the mail today. I thought it was an interesting concept.. a chiptune soundtrack on a Famicom cart. I'm looking forward to listening to it today :) Also looking forward to playing Shatterhand and Solbrain today as well :)

Oh shit I forgot that I pre-ordered this haha. It says it's shipped now. Exciting. :)

That's how it was for me too, I got the note from Play-Asia and it jogged my memory. I had done it sometime a couple of months ago right when the kids were born haha.. Also, just played a bit of Shatterhand. This game still holds up. Will pop in Solbrain in a little bit :D

I very much look forward to seeing what robot combinations you guys prefer to use. Every time I play Shatterhand I can't decide/remember which I like.

I don't want to say it's cheating, but yeah, like someone suggested, let's hold the nominations off until I post the Game Club Pick post every month from now on to avoid situations like this.

Anyone have any experience ordering from the ebay seller "Hit-Japan"? I'm concerned the economy shipping I picked may take something like two to four months.

I only paid for the order about four hours ago so I messaged him or her to see if I can catch them before they shipped it along with asking for a clarification about shipping.

I may ask to upgrade the shipping if it's ridiculously slow.

I have. Usually 2-4 weeks to Canada (east). Typically 2 actually.

Oh yeah, I've ordered from him quite often. He ships pretty quickly even with economy shipping, just a few weeks even.

Good! Now lets hope Strider win! I actually just bought Strider 2 for the PS1 last week, might have to try a complete Strider-playthrough of the Arcade, Nes, Mega Drive, PS1 and PS3-game if it wins, since I now own all, and only really played the Mega Drive one.

No way will it take 2-4 months, NOLA. A couple weeks most likely.

I didn't much get into Rygar since I've been busy with work and family and there's no saves in the game. I will likely vote for Kickle this time since it's more arcade style. I actually just bought it (with manual) a few weeks ago. The sound effects and music really remind me of an arcade game, especially if you have a TV with bass kick.

Yeah Kickle is a great game which is why I picked it and hope more peeps enjoy it. I rented it several weekends back when it was released.

Then you guys are potentially ready for April, but Jackal is not being voted on for March ;)

That said, I should probably own Jackal myself... so, bought. Gotta be prepared!

I just played Solbrain again, but had to stop after game overing a few times at the fire stage (Area F?) I cleared the first couple stages just fine (the 15 second cannon helps enormously at the water stage' boss) but that one was just too much. I never get through the lift part without taking damage and couldn't figure out a safe pattern to hit the boss without taking damage either. I'll try again later this month.

As for what robot combination to use: my favourite is ABB (alpha-beta-beta). It gives you two projectiles that bounce all over, making it easy to destroy enemies without being on their line of fire.

e: these beardoes suck

Is the voting link up yet?

No, I'll put it up sooner than later. I have to make a whole post with images and stuff (see here) and it's been a busy couple days for me so far (also I didn't expect the list would be ready so soon!), so as soon as I have a few minutes I'll get cracking on that.

Just take your time man, its still almost a month of Shatterhand to go first :)

Appreciate the advice, but I gotta stay on schedule so people have time to buy the game that gets voted in. Don't get me wrong -- I'm going to be sinking my teeth into Shatterhand this weekend and I can't freakin' wait. I've been looking forward to giving that game the business for some time.

Is Solbrain different enough from Shatterhand to get one over the other? Sometimes Famicom versions of rare US games are cheaper, but this is the other way around.
