NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

Anybody in here need a RGB'd AV Famicom? I'm slimming down my collection to just PC Engine and Gamecube, and I'm getting rid of a ton of stuff.

Oh, lots of Famicom games too, and a converter to play NES games on said AV Famicom.

Let me know! I'll do below eBay norms for GAFers.

PM'ed >_>

Fuuuucccck. Too late. :(

I'm possibly interested in the RGB'd AV Famicom assuming it's not too yellowed and not $Texas, and I'm certainly interested in picking up some carts and then definitely 100% the NES-Famicom adapter.

Post when you're done dealing with RoryDropkick and RadarScope1 and I'll see what remains.

Nobody's claimed the AV Famicom itself! Folks are just talking about games.

So I beaten Shatterhand, and I then I played it 20+ more times. The game is great fun, controls well, has good to great music, and good graphics. But this game is barely challenging, only the falling rock section, fire rising up section and the last section of the last stage were what I found difficult and even after some tries you can get through them. The bosses are just too easy and you can tank some of them, like the final boss even, which I beat on my 2nd try when I 1st got to him. In one of the runs I did I didn't get hit by the final boss even once!

I remember this being compared to Journey to Silius in difficulty and before I even played the game I knew Journey was harder. And it turns out I was right(IMO), like this game is not even close to Journey in terms of challenge. The robot helpers, full health stations, mostly easy enemies and bosses, mostly reasonable difficulty with easy and hard bits, unlimited continues vs(Journey) a game with extreme limited health items that barely heal you, mini bosses that are tougher than most of the bosses in Shatterhand, no bosses that you can tank(tanking is suicide in this game), a difficult platforming stage at the end that scrolls the screen over, having to fight 2 final bosses on one health bar, and best to use the required weapon or else you're in for a long fight, and 3 continues. Journey is quite harder in terms of difficulty.

Overall Shatterhand is an awesome game that's enjoyable and a blast to play and is one of the better NES games out there, but it's far from the hardest, and not even that hard for that matter, still, it's a great game that everyone should try out.

That's pretty much exactly how I feel about it. I'd never seen comparisons to Journey to Silius, but Shatterhand's definitely a tamer game.

OMFG...I just no death Shatterhand, and just a day before my birthday...I'll just upload it tomorrow. That last section of the last stage when I had 1 bar of health left was so freaking tense!!!

Timu your are a beast. I haven't yet taken the time to Shatterhand... I'm being a not-good-member of this club right now haha

I did however play through Crisis Force with a friend today. That game is amazing. But it is pretty easy.

Thoughts on the Famicom Disk System? At some point in time I'll probably buy a cheap one just because it looks cool but it really looks like its library is lacking...or at least lacking in games that non-japanese speakers could enjoy.

Some exclusive games on it are some of the best on the system. And have some of the best music because the FDS has two extra sound channels. No Japanese language required.

Look through the thread I and others have provided lists before.

If you don't have an FDS, you can't play all the best games the Famicom/NES has to offer, simple as that.

God damnit, my copy of 8-bit Music Power is stuck in customs at the moment. So I guess I'll have to pay an extra handling fee for it as well. =/

Also congrats on both your birthday and for no-death running Shatterhand Timu!

"Listen, and understand that Timu is out there. He can’t be bargained with. He can’t be reasoned with. He doesn’t feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And he absolutely will not stop, ever, until he's 1CCed every nes action platformer!"

Huggers, just want to say that I enjoyed your video on the Amazing History of Sonic. Nice job.

Also, Happy B-Day Timu, can't believe you no deathed this game already.

I legit 1CC'd Shatterhand myself a couple weeks ago actually. Unlike Timu I found it a pretty consistent challenge, but maybe I just liked using the less-effective robots. The final stage, in particular, took me awhile to conquer. But I agree about the last boss--kind of a disappointment.

I'd still call it one of the best platformers on FC/NES though. There's the level design that strikes a great balance between brisk and puzzley, the tasteful and evocative pixel art and animation, and of course the music. Probably Natsume's platformer highlight, though I haven't delved too deeply into Shadow of the Ninja.

I was extremely excited when my 8-bit power cart showed up at my door this weekend, but it unfortunately won't start on my Analogue NT. It boots into a white screen and stays there. I'm hoping that the firmware upgrade that fixed a few games like CV3 has the same effect here, as I've yet to apply that to my system.

Is there anyone here that's successfully tried this combo? It's also possible that my cart is defective, which would suck too.

Same thing happened when I used my Gyromite Converter. If it the upgrade works definitely give me a heads up, as otherwise I'm trying to finally upgrade to a regular FC.

Shockingly, nobody's claimed my AV Famicom RGB yet.

If anyone is interested in doing so, here's an eBay link:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/RGB-AV-Famicom-with-controllers-NES-converter-game-/301868501265?

Make an offer and mention you're from GAF, I'll give you a darn good deal.

That's pretty tempting. I'll have to think on it. My Birthday's today so I should have some extra spending money real soon. lol

Don't get me wrong, I'm certainly interested, I just can't justify it right now.

I do want the majority of your Famicom carts though, so snap me a picture of the cases as I'd like to see what those look like before I make claim to anything. :P

I'd also be interested in purchasing the NES-Famicom adapter if you'd break it off from your AV Famicom listing.

1CCing Shatterhand is crazy. I'm not sure I can beat the game at all. Maybe if I really sat with the game for a day but not sure if I have the patience! The last stage kicked my butt pretty hard last time.

I'd make an offer if I wasn't all set with my own unit. That's a good price considering the extras included and extending a deal to Gaffers on top of that.

i watched the vid and happy b-day =)

yeah, happy born day timus!

Ah thanks man. Glad you enjoyed the vid, gotta love Sonic.

And yes, Happy Birthday Timu!

Happy birthday Timu! May your celebrations be filled with many 1CC completions!
Thank you everyone!!! As for how I did it so quick, I played the hell out of it last week over 30+ times and didn't find it so bad so I just went and did a playthrough of it.

Game is only hard if you handicap yourself.=p That last stage took 10 tries before I got it right, and on the recording I did it on the 1st try!!!

Really? The game isn't even that hard, sure it has a few hard moments but it's very generous with health stations, checkpoints, robot helpers and mostly easy enemies and bosses. As for the last stage only the last section was hard, plus that stage is filled with chances for robot helpers. This is nowhere near something like TMNT which is 10x harder than this!

When I get to those harder games I don't plan to no death them, hell I may have trouble not using a continue even, but I must not use a continue dammit!=p

But I agree about the last boss--kind of a disappointment.

You think so? I kind of dislike most of Shatterhand's bosses (they often have too few (and too weak) behaviors to justify their large health - the wall-jumping boss and water stage boss are really sort of pathetic), but the final boss is by far the best in the game. A bit too vulnerable to the BBB droid (but what isn't in this game) but I think there's way more going on in that fight than in any of the other boss battles; all three of his attacks are fun to deal with and his randomness keeps the fight interesting.

I no-death-cleared Shatterhand a few months ago. Definitely going to have to play it again this month.

You can tank the final boss as well if you have full health...not to mention just get next to him to avoid those 3 lasers firing at you...in some runs I only beaten him with my fists.

I think I no-death ran Shatterhand myself once. I can't remember. Again, it's a game I beat yearly.

The best bot by far is BBA. The Grenades do as much damage as a haymaker and have great splash damage.

Same thing happened when I used my Gyromite Converter. If it the upgrade works definitely give me a heads up, as otherwise I'm trying to finally upgrade to a regular FC.

Well, I'm sad to report that it did not work.

Analogue linked me to the latest firmware and the update applied perfectly via EverDrive.
The update actually fixed some odd EverDrive behavior I had been experiencing (sometimes needed to be turned on for a few seconds prior to plugging in HDMI cable in order to start), but the 8 bit music power cart still boots to a white screen. It's frozen, too, as it won't let me pull up the HiDefNes menu.

I'm a bit stuck, as I've no way to test the cart elsewhere to try and find out if that's where the problem actually is.
So I'm back to my original question: does anyone have an Analogue NT and have successfully booted 8 bit music power?

I still can't get 8-Bit Music Power to work on my NT (it doesn't have the HDMI mod), so it must be a quirk of the hardware. VRC6 games run fine, though, so it's pretty strange that this wouldn't.

Would the system work with Composite and S-Video, or does modding it restrict it strictly to RGB out?

Also, since Bomber King is listed with AV Famicom I'm guessing it's no longer available for purchase separately?

That is very strange. I don't know what the cartridge is doing that is particularly special compared to other carts.

Thanks for the info! So there goes my sensible theory that the problem was with HiDefNes. The RGB NT should be identical enough to the original hardware for this. I too wonder what this cart is doing...

Yeah, it's weird. Could be something with the specific PPU that Analogue used? Whatever the case, it's really making me wish I had the cash on hand to make an offer on Mercutio's modded Famicom.

I just got my 8-bit Music Power cart in today and it's giving me the same issue with a white screen. But this is on both an AV-modded Famicom as well as on an NTSC NES using a 60-72 pin adapter. So at least in my case I think there's something wrong with the cartridge. Maybe there were some issues in production with some carts? Either way, this sucks.

I also had to pay a customs and import fee on it, so the fact that I might have to send it back as well feels pretty shitty.

Yeah, the carts being badly made is also a possibility! The circuit board on mine is slightly curved, which is not something I've ever seen on any legitimate NES or Famicom release.

I bought mine through AmiAmi and asked them if it would be possible to get an exchange or refund, but their response was that the item description in the shop basically said "This item may not actually work on any hardware, legitimate or otherwise," so I'm out of pocket for a neat boxed paperweight, I guess? At least it was relatively cheap through AmiAmi (about $35 after shipping—thanks, weak yen!).

I got mine through Play-Asia and just now inquired about replacing it. I'm not getting my hopes up though.

Edit: Well it looks like it's sold out on Play-Asia so replacing it is probably not an option. *sigh*

I'm in the exact same situation, but I haven't contacted them yet.
While it not working on every system is absolutely fair game, it is starting to look like we might have gotten actual DOA/defective carts, which this policy has got to be able to accommodate. Unexpected to hear that this might not be related to the Analogue specifically!

I'll ask them for the same, at the very least it might help for them to hear this out of more and more people.

I just received my 8bit music power cartridge! Can't wait to play it now.

[edit]damn it's packed with so much stuff! I expected a simple yet cool playlist but this thing is so... different.

Khaz, what are you running it on, and where did you buy it? Have any other NES/Famicom systems you can try it on?
As you can see from the recent conversation, some of us are missing out on this even though we've received our copies. :(

It's a standard, unmodded AV Famicom; the game comes from Play-Asia. I've meant to RGB mod it for a while but never got the time/money to do it.
