NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

Took 4 tries. Beat Nightmare on Elm Street again. woo... You know that feeling you get when you've beaten a game multiple times and then it just mercilessly kicks your ass?

I absolutely love Nightmare on Elm St. I used to play it all the time as a kid, and remember when I finally figured out you could activate dream powers when asleep (fighting a boss): it made the game INFINITELY easier.

Rare really made an exorbinant amount of good games back in the day. Also, does anyone know if this was another David Wise score?

It's good. Way better than the reputation it has. I'd give it a 7 out of 10.

Been going through a job application process the last few weeks and just found out I didn't get the gig. Gonna smoke some good stuff and play NES games tonight...

I'm still waiting to hear back on mine and they've been going back and fourth about it for at least a month. It sucks dude.

So after giving the 8-bit Music Power cart more than a few tries, I discovered that I could get it to show the intro with the "Riki" logo for a bit, but then it inevitably crashes after a few seconds.

I found this out after slapping the cartridge against my leg a few times. Yes, seriously. And the more I slapped it, the longer the intro ran for. After a short while the cart only shows the white screen again, but a few more slaps will get it going for a bit again. But it still always eventually crashes after a few seconds. I couldn't get past the intro, except if I pressed the start button. But that only leads to it trying to load the menu and glitches out the same way every time.

The reason I started slapping the cartridge was that I know on the Amiga 500 computers you could sometimes fix RAM bootup errors by dropping the Amiga against the table from a few inches up, which could reseat the RAM chips if that was the problem. So my first theory was that maybe the chips were somehow not properly seated. But bending the PCB slightly seems to also affect it. So my theory now is that some of the traces in the PCB are broken or something, and that slapping/bending it slightly re-aligns them for a bit, but ultimately it won't work.

Still haven't heard anything from Play-Asia btw.

Wow, that is a huge notch on the defective column, nice job!
Shame we're all having these issues putting a damper on a really, really exciting release.

Soccer, Tennis, Ice Climber, Kid Icarus, Balloon Fight, Clu Clu Land, Stack Up, DK, DK Jr, DK3, and DK Jr Math (LOL). I have loose carts of most of these (including DK Jr Math) but not the completes. Most of the ones I have left are pretty pricey. I also pretty much only go for the circle seal/hangtab versions so that's even a bit more. I will in all likelihood never own complete Stack Up or DKJM but I will try to score the manuals if I can. What about you?

I'm missing Kid Icarus, Rad Racer, Soccer, Tennis, Baseball, Balloon Fight, Donkey Kong Jr., Clu Clu Land, Gumshoe, Gyromite, Wild Gunman, Pinball, Slalom, and, of course, friggin' Donkey Kong Jr. Math. The ones I've got are all CIB and in nice condition, but I haven't been as picky about getting the hang tab versions. I definitely go after those when the opportunity (reasonably) presents itself, but I'd estimate my collection is about 50-50 right now.

Man that ninja boss in Shatterhand is the only one that gave me trouble...stopped my playthrough dead (not to mention after I tried to continue the game froze) There has to be a pattern though.

Do you mean the one on the elevator? If you do, yeah, that guy is a serious roadblock. I'm not sure I can consistently beat him bare-handed, unlike all the other bosses - I always try to bring the supersuit or a BBB drone into the fight.

He may be one of the hardest bosses in the game...but he's not that hard.

After he does his flame attack, prepare to jump 2-3 times from his sword wave attack and then move, attack him as he lands, run away from his fire attack, repeat that and you are good to go.

Also BBB is the best for him. I just no death the game earlier this week so I would know.

Man I know that feel. This arrived to me two years ago:

Priority mail comes with up to 50 dollars insurance. You should be able to prove how much you paid for that and get the money for it.

Yup and maybe I was just being too aggressive. Damn thing ruined my first time playthrough, almost made it with no deaths ( had some close calls before). Gonna try to focus next time. Sucks that I was going for a playthrough instead of a standard review and the game freezes :p

That being said, I cant believe I ever just thought of Natsume as that one company that makes odd sim RPGs and Ninja Warriors. Missed out on so much. Also Taito by extension.

That's how my childhood copy of Mega Man 1 looked when I fished it out of storage :( I eventually just donated it to a mom n pop shop... I couldn't bare to look at it like that. I never replaced it :( Thankfully it's not stupid rare... but it's not a bargain either.

Man Shatterhand just does not want to be finished tonight. I took your advice Timu, and beat up the ninja, get to the final stage (we headed to space?) and get past the first 3 rematches, then someone from work calls. I pause the game to help em out, dog runs across controller cord for no reason, system locks at pause screen.

There must be something wrong with your copy!!!

Apparently it just needed a light cleaning again. I guess even if you have a game in a sleeve and in an enclosed area, it can still get dusty.

On that note, just beat it. That last boss battle came right down to the wire for me!

Had a great night digging into NES games for the first time in a while last night.

Shatterhand really is great. It has a near 16-bit feel in terms of the sophistication of the presentation IMO. For example, when you die and the music fades out layer by layer, the image fades to black and the crosshair-like graphics zero in before your next life begins. The animation when you cling to fences and swing hard at the end of combs looks great, too. It's all really well done. I was only able to beat the opening level, but I think that's because I kept trying different levels at the select screen. Is there any recommended order?

Tried out some other games I just bought, too: BreakThru, Defender II, Clash at Demonhead, Legendary Wings, Shadow of the Ninja and some others. And then I busted out some Donkey Kong and Rad Racer. It was a good night....

Is there any recommended order?

The levels are actually given an alphabetical order in the game itself. I think the only thing to keep in mind is that it's probably best to save Area F - the level in the center of the stage select screen - for last. Aside from the final stage, it's the hardest bit of the game.

I went ABDCEF and worked perfectly for me.

I stopped by my local retro shop and picked up a few games. Double Dragon II, Astyanax, another game I'm forgetting... and then I saw a game with a sweet cover that grabbed my attention: King's Knight from Square.

I looked up a YouTube video and my eyes popped because I'm 99% sure this is the very first game we ever rented when I was like 7. I could never remember what it was called. All I could vaguely recall was an outdoor medieval setting and a little man on a scrolling screen. It was very confusing and chaotic for a kid who had not yet beaten World 1-4 of SMB.

Yeah, this has to be it because I just barely remember the "old man" and the "dragon."

One mystery of my childhood solved by coincidence on a random day! I haven't had a chance to revisit it and say whether or not it's a good game. I was only drawn to it by the cover, same as we must have been when we were kids... which is not surprising when I recall that we used to watch this back then:

Now I need to learn the identity of the Apple II math(?) game that looked it was in a Donkey Kong stage.

Just got my Twin Famicom in the mail and Super Mario Bros. 2 is already kicking my butt. Gimmick! sounds like a completely different game with the expanded audio. It's so nice not having to deal with a converter. lol

That said, I'm still having issues with 8-Bit Game Power. After messing with the Reset Button, I got it briefly to show the opening logo/sounds but it was glitched up and crashed after a few seconds. Have only been able to get that far twice but otherwise it's still stuck on the white screen. WTF is up with these cartridges?

That's exactly what happens with mine as well. Most of the time it's just a white screen but sometimes I could get the intro going for a few seconds before crashing.

King's Knight is not that well regarded but it's Square's first ever game on the FC so it's noteworthy. And yeah the box art is surprising good for a Western release.

No love for Star Versus huh? Ok lol

Any of y'all gonna be at MAGFest?

King's Knight has the groundwork for a cool game, but they just didn't complete it in the way it needed it. Could be a cool one to revisit and tidy up as a downloadable game, but they never will.

Looking on Amazon.jp and some mentions on Famicom World it seems that it will only work on specific systems. Can't find a list which systems it will run on beyond older Twin Famicoms not working (?), some seem specific down to the model number. Read some claims that it wasn't working on their original Famicom but did on some clones.

Never heard of a NES/Famicom that was system specific beyond region, not even sure how that's possible. Best bet seems to be original AV Famicoms.

Considering it's a music tape I guess once it's uploaded online it won't be as big of a loss as if it had been a full on game, regardless I gotta call foul on the developers for not providing this crucial information before releasing it.

This thing has been so fun so far, and it even performs admirably enough through composite on my plasma tv. Metro Cross is something I never would have heard of if not for Game Center CX, and same with Quest of Ki. There's a weird pleasantness to Ki, those jumps that seem like you're wearing a jetpack on the moon are pretty fun once you wrap your head around them.

Oh huh. So they might actually work, just not on our systems? Well that's a bummer, but at least they are working carts then. I'm gonna have to give it to my friend and have him test it out in one of his many FCs to see if he can get it to run.

This last post on Famicomworld is just...
They are using pirate boards with 3.3v tolerant flash chips, without voltage shifters. Which I'm sure is causing issues on many NES/Famicom systems since the systems supply 5v to all carts.

Why the hell would they do that?! Wouldn't that mean that it could damage the cart if I use it in my Famicom?

Awesome picture!

I love Famicom carts and the AV Famicom. I really need to get one, one of these days.

Asked a guy on twitter at random and they said it worked with a Gyromite Converter in a Topload NES. Am going to have take a look into that. Doesn't seem to use any extra channels like Castlevania 3/Gimmick! so it should work in theory. I wouldn't mind putting some money down on a Topload given I need to get a new pin connector for my old one anyway.

I saw that/posted there as well. Beats me, but at least it's not showing anything worse than the blank white screen, so that at least means the system is sensing it.

I've tried it with a converter on my NTSC NES-001 and it still only shows a white screen. That wasn't a Gyromite converter though, but still. Maybe it only works with toploaders? It seems that it works with the AV Famicom as well right?

There's no difference. I have a Gyromite converter + NES-001 and I get the same result. One of the reasons I got a Twin FC was to see if I could get it running on it instead, but it seems they don't get consistent results either according to FC World & Amazon. lol

AV Famicoms are the only ones I've heard/seen to have consistent success, so in theory NTSC toploaders/NES-101 should also work, but even then IDK beyond a single claim. Might be best to head to a local game store and ask if you can test it out on some systems they have laying around.

EDIT: http://www.columbuscircle.co.jp/products/?id=1448350534-521588

Found this on PlayAsia, has a statement from the developer on all the issues, basically says it's not guaranteed to work on original FCs, new FCs (AV toploaders?), and Twin FCs and nothing else. -_-

This thing seems interesting but I won't be getting one based on all the issues it has. Yikes.

I really wish I was better at my Japanese so I could translate all the comments on the Amazon.jp review section as it seems it's screwed over several native FC owners as well.

Very disappointing, which stings twice as hard for how much I was looking forward to that release.
I also gave up on the Amiami return after sending them a video of it not running on my Analogue only to get back a request for more videos showing my copy not working on at least 2 other kinds of Famicoms. WTF.

At this rate, the only way I'm getting to try this will be whenever someone produces a ROM that I can load into my Everdrive.

Hey, am I crazy or did the NES pad have concave buttons? Using the Famicom dogbone feels so nice, and most of that is because of the feel of the convex buttons, but I don't remember those on the US one.

US NES pad has concave buttons, the superior button. Hate that everyone has ditched them in the modern age.

Just google images of them, would get you the answer quicker.

NES and original Famicom both have concave buttons.

AV Famicom and NES 2 both had basically identical dogbones (apart from cord length) with convex buttons.

From Game Boy onward, Nintendo largely switched to convex. The only major example otherwise is two of the US SNES controller's face buttons, which actually added some utility, pity about the colouring (and console design itself).

That type of story happened at JFK with my Drone in a similar pelican case. Pelican has some cases that barely fit carry-on regulations, so it's nice to take them with you instead of check them in.

JFK pulled me aside after scanning it and said we have to open this up. So they opened it, started swiping some wand over it - and said you know New York doesn't allow drones. We have to confiscate this. I'm like I'm not even in NY, I'm flying through to a connection. (sidepoint: it's actually illegal to FLY a drone in NYC).

They wouldn't let up. So I said you're not going to take my drone. At least give me the memory card so I can download the videos!

After a few minutes, they said they were just pulling my leg. I gave the guy a punch on the arm, and his coworker friend said "I'd never do that man, I like my job too much". Haha!

Funny that the puddle jumper flights and the flight outside the USA, landing in an international country had nothing checked - coming home they checked in between the puddle jump flight.

Final story is the carry-on case got stuck in the overhead bin in the smaller flight back. The flight attendant scolded me for breaking the overhead bin. Afterwards, they had an engineer come to disassemble the overhead bin. The pilot got out and scolded me too, saying they had to leave for Miami immediately after landing. After he was done crying, I told him it would be nice if the bin outside by the checkin counter didn't let my carry on luggage fit it then, huh? =D
