NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

I'm noticing a lack of activity over the last month to two months for the Game Club, so I figure I should kind of ask "What's up?" Voting is down, people aren't talking as much about the games as they were when we started (Street Fighter 2010 just kicked off, but literally nothing has been said yet)... if we can do this better, I'd like to try. So what can I/we improve upon to make this more engaging?

I'm not excluded from this, so I'll just say that The Guardian Legend isn't my favorite game and I didn't really sit down to play it, so my participation last month was low. I will be sitting down with Street Fighter at some point this week (maybe tonight?) and I'll be posting some impressions.

I started Dark Souls 2 when i waited for ever for those extender cables, havent really been able to put it down since. But going to try to give SF2010 a decent try next week!

I think it's the time of year. People are getting busier and busier between now and Memorial Day - then many will have more free time.
.
Agreed. Now that we're coming out of the winter season most people are just more active. I played Shatterhand and enjoyed it, but Guardian Legend wasn't my thang. Just haven't had the time to try Street Fighter.

So here it is, after 20+ years of collecting, my complete Konami Famicom set.

I kind of got burned when I ordered Monster Party and the game never arrived lol.

The US-centricism of the board kind of hurts, nobody wants to buy PAL games, and US ebay is full of global shipping program nightmares.

Mario 3 was easy because we all had it already, so that one was cool.

Picked up Dragon Warrior II and TMNT earlier today. With the former I can now say I own the complete Dragon Warrior saga.

Congrats. Am still more of a Capcom fan personally, but ever since I started trying to track down the Konami FDS titles I must finally concede that they were the 3rd Party king of the 8-Bit era. I don't think I can count just how many quality games they put out that I suddenly want. Call me jealous. lol

I just got my Famicom Mother cart back after I sent it off to get "translated", and I really love having it on original media/hardware. The $25 to have it modded might be too much for most stuff, but for this particular artifact, it made it seem very worth it.

Great post, D.Lo. A 20 year quest. Nice.

So I know we have a lot of PAL players in the thread. Maybe we should take the nominations a little bit slower and make sure we have some representation of PAL games in the list for votes. Are there really that many US games that didn't make it to PAL land? What games have we voted for that didn't get PAL releases?

It's not something easily fixable really.

Most games got PAL releases, but the NES didn't sell as much in PAL, and was much more spread out over many countries. As such there are much fewer 'common' titles and most non-Mario games are not as easily available as they might be in the US. For example, it's possible no PAL copies are listed on ebay of say Castlevania in one, or all combined, PAL countries at any time. I'm in Australia and so unless I get something sent halfway around the world it just might not be available right now.

Now buying from the US should the best option for me quite often, but the global shipping program crap (plus crappy anti-seller rules meaning everyone uses it to cover their ass) has ruined that with its slow, ultra-expensive postage in so many listings.

On top of that, I mostly buy Japanese these days anyway, and Japanese versions mostly have a much different price profile as different games are rare/valuable, see the Solbrain/Shatterhand discussions. So that doesn't really work either!

So no big deal, just makes it harder for PAL bros!

There is a market for PAL releases but it's the more casual gamers or the collectors. Guys like me usually take the NTSC route at some point or another. With NES/Famicom it's glaring since many of the best games are unoptimized slow pieces of 50hz shit.

On SNES and MegadriveI have a few PAL games since I can just pop my 50/60 hz switch, but for NES I sold my PAL stock in the last few years with the retro (SCN area code) craze going on here in Finland and made a fortune. People who are now rediscovering NES paid an arm and a leg for SCN loose carts, and still do, but it's already dwindling a bit.

Nowadays I rock my RGB modded AV Famicom with mostly Famicom games but a fair number of USA carts as well with a good adapter and I'm happy. I just don't own Guardian Legend or SF 2010, so can't comment - been meaning to get GL for a while but ended up buying other stuff last month.

Wow, impressive. Congratulations!
BTW, which box protectors do you use for the games with somewhat smaller boxes like The Goonies?
I use Japanese GBA box protectors.

They're still a bit too big, but much better than 'standard' larger Famicom ones.

There's no product anywhere near small enough for the original release Famicom boxes (eg Donkey Kong red box), which are only slightly larger than the cart.

okay, so it took a while, but i finally got good shots of my collection! this one was an easy crop, thought i'd post this first

Where do you get the NES shockboxes and inserts?

Cardboard originals like d.Lo's Konami collection are really nice. Still, I prefer sturdy cases like the ones with Genesis and DS games. I know some people hate aftermarket boxes but I like their practicality and get anxious about damaging original frail packaging (my GBA collection). I prefer not to worry about it. Not that I'm reckless and trash my games, but better to leave that stuff to someone who will really appreciate and care for it properly.

I used to be able to beat Street Fighter 2010 at will. In the seventh grade I had a kid call me out on it so I hooked up a VCR to my TV and recorded my playthorough. I wish I had that tape still.

ah, they're old Universal Game Cases (16-bit's favorite), just made sure to get good covers of Cover Project & print them up nicely at kinko's/fedex, haha. you really dont have to use super heavy stock either, the plastic lining makes them shine.

So I played a bunch of Street Fighter 2010 tonight, and it's starting to click! I think the first stage is almost unfairly hard, because after getting a handle on the controls, the game becomes a lot more manageable in the following stages.

I like how varied everything is, every stage seems very different. I made it midway through Planet 2, and turned it off after dying on a vertical scrolling stage that had me climbing up vines and dodging/attacking enemies.

The graphics aren't amazing, but they get the job done. They remind me a bit of Sunsoft's Batman. I also liked the cutscene that played between planets, makes me want to continue on with the story, as cliche as it is. Finally, the music has got that good, catchy Capcom style.

Question: Does the game have infinite continues? I could see myself beating this one if that's the case. I'll be playing more this weekend for sure!

Cool, thanks. Yeah I've been looking for protectors made for both types of boxes for a while. Odd that no one has made any. By chance I have one protector for N64 carts and they're ALMOST perfect for the small boxes, but they're like half a millimeter too thin. I could get a box in safely but it seemed to put too much pressure on the box for me to feel good about leaving it in there.

How fo you guys play your NES games? I mean, how long gaming sessions, and how often?

I notice that the dynamic is really different to modern games like Halo 5. While I could easily bang five hours into it without noticing, five hours of a NES game in one go would feel really hardcore. It's hard to articulate, I guess it has to do with how hard most games are.

I usually play my Analogue NT once or twice a week, usually for half an hour to an hour on one sitting.

I typically play my NES games until they're done straight through. I don't play a lot of RPG or other heavy time investment games on the system, so usually an hour or two is all it takes to get through them. I mean, I have dumped 5+ hours into games like Zelda in the past as a kid, but not as much these days.

So it's been almost three months since I purchased my AV-modded Famicom and about 20 carts for it (the Famicom came with 8, bought the other 12 individually) so I figure it's about time to buy a few more.

$100 just popped up in my Paypal account from Swagbucks, so I think I'm gonna do a bit of eBay shopping tonight...here's hoping prices or inventory hasn't gotten stupid since January for some reason. :P

Gonna see if I can find a seller that is also selling NES>Famicom cart adapters so they can throw one of those in. I'd love to play my NES games on the more-reliable Famicom hardware.

SF2k10 is pretty tough if you go in not knowing anything, but definitely gets manageable and actually fun afterwards.

SFV needs a 2k10 ken costume.

Beat Bart Vs. The World the other day(it's the easiest NES Simpsons game I think), and I just now finished Bartman Meets Radioactive Man. But I still cannot for the life of me get past "Skinner" in the mall in Space Mutants, that's the furthest I've gotten. If only you had a chance to have more than two hits like in the other two games.

Local gamestore finally got a copy of Shatterhand in. Been wanting to add that one to the collection for a long time. Looking at price charts from last month compared to now, it's definitely starting to see some movement (+$10~15), so I hope I got it just in time.

Am almost done with Pokemon NES. The postgame content feels pretty refreshing. I just need another random drop Firestone and I can complete the Pokedex.

Would you all pay $40 for a Little Samson repro? Worth it?

Depends on your stance on repros, but I would think that's a good price for a repro copy. Little Samson is a fantastic game and is worth checking out at some point regardless. Take it from someone who paid $200 for the Famicom version. lol

Yeah, that's about my limit on repro prices. I own only one other repro cart (SMB2 JP) and I will never have an EverDrive and don't use emulators much at all. And of course I'll never pay $800 for a copy unless I win money on a game show or something. So if I'm ever going to play it .... This seems like a sensible way to go.

I figured the whole "Street Fighter 2010 has weird-to-bad controls" statement was an exaggeration, but man. It is not exactly the most friendly scheme, is it? This one is gonna be a struggle. The music is great but holy shit this is hard.

Would you all pay $40 for a Little Samson repro? Worth it?

Probably worth it.

That's am awesome collection :) I'm aiming to get a full Famicom collection of Capcom games (bar Legendary Wings and Strider which I'm aiming for USA releases, since they never got a Japanese releases). I've got most of them most of the games now, only one game I'm having trouble finding the first Rescue Rangers Famicom release. I can find a couple on eBay and Yahoo Japan but they are slightly beat up (or slightly too expensive). I'm hoping either an amazing condition version turns up, or at least a decent condition one that isn't overpriced...

Buying repros seems a bit pointless to me... I like original carts and original hardware, but if you're gonna put 30-40$ on a repro, couldn't you just save a bit and get a flash cart instead?

I bought one of those 150 in 1 carts off eBay a little while back, and it was like 40 bucks. It works pretty well, has some graphical glitches in some games but nothing major from what I can tell. It has games like Little Samson and Flintstones 2 on it, although notably Little Samson is the Japanese ROM. Also all the Mega Mans are the Japanese Rockman games. That may be another option you could look into.

I made that calculation, too -- like, that's 40 percent of the way to a flash cart. But then I also feel like, if I get a flash cart, why would I keep all my other carts? I'm just a step away from going ROM-only.

I bought the LS cart, by the way. I'll try it out tonight.

Part of the appeal for repros is that you have a physical object to store and put in the console when you want to play its game. When it comes with a cool label and a box it's even better (it doesn't have to be a facsimile of the original). In contrast, I find choosing the game I want to play from a list on the screen a very dull experience. Back when I was relying entirely to emulation for my retro gaming, I had complete collections of ROMs in the computer. But in the end I would be unable to settle to a single game more than a few minutes. I knew I had a nearly endless supply of games waiting for me and I just couldn't stay on one. At least when I put a cartridge in, I'm committing to the game, I'll play until I game Over before I consider getting my fat ass off the chair to change game.

I do have an Everdrive, but I'm mainly using it to test the game I want on real hardware, before buying it. Testing the various regional releases to know which I like better, etc.

I bought an HxC floppy emulator for an old computer, the first addon I bought for it, similar in use as an Everdrive cartridge. But because I like tinkering with hardware, I also modded an original 3.5 floppy drive to use on it. Then I bought a bunch of floppies to test it, and after that I designed some cool labels for the games I like. Now the HxC is in a drawer, and I will probably sell it once I have another reliable way to copy stuff on discs.

Yeah, it's very apparent once you open it up. But you can also often tell from the label: colors are a bit washed out with that photocopy look, usually some glue is visible and the cuts can be a little off.

Agreed.

I see it as a convenience to have all the games in one place, especially for trying the ones with astronomical prices in the hundreds of dollars or more... but it's not going to stop you from buying games that attract your attention. At least not me. I have all the Everdrives, Wii loader, RetroArch, Dolphin, working on setting up Nintendont on my Wii U, etc. I still buy physical copies of the games I really want. Almost weekly at my local b&m.

Last weekend I picked up Shingen the Ruler, Nintendo World Cup and Friday the 13th, three of my childhood favorites. My GameCube and Wii collections have at least doubled since I set up Dolphin on my PC last year. A ROM can't replace the feeling of owning a real copy. I have a small collection of of MVS and PC Engine games for that reason. Love those huge carts and little hucards.

I sort of wonder if I'll regret going all digital with Wii U and if now would be the right time to get physical copies. I don't quite feel the same about 3DS because it's just very convenient to have all the games in the system when I'm out.

I actually had this thought about flashcarts at some point too. If I have all the games I want in the cart, why do I then have all these games in the shelf? I like picking them up, taking them out of the box and popping them in the machine.

On the other hand, with a flashcart I could play some games I probably will never be able to afford.. it's not as much the NES but the SNES flashcart that intrigues me. I'll probably have to do some calculating, whether there are enough games I want to play to justify buying a flashcart, or simply to have repros made.

And I completely agree on the fact that my playing too is very erratic nowadays compared to the past. I play in very little brackets of time and it's already hard for me to play a game that takes a long time (lots of my Saturn and PS1 RPG runs are completely stopped) so I tend to prefer games that are easy to continue and I can get into the action fast.

I've never really cared about placing the games inside their respective system, but the emulation scene isn't that great on modern consoles. Nintendo in particular likes making you pay for the same games constantly, so I might as well buy the original hardware and never have pay for them again.

There's also tons of games I missed from the NES era since I didn't start gaming until halfway through the Genesis and SNES years. It really does stink that most companies are content to sit on their catalog like Konami. Which is the main reason I picked up an NES get all the 8 bit gems still being held back due to licensing issues.

After all this, I think I am done buying retro-games on modern consoles unless some actual effort is placed into them like the Mega Man Legacy Collection.

Sure, I figure it's for the labor and is far cheaper than ever buying a legit copy.

$40 is about my limit for repros though.

just wanted to co-sign this post, forgot to mention in my shots before that Splatterhouse wakku, Mother 1 (easy patch!) and Sweet Home were repros for just under that amount, and i love em!

For me, Recca is a dope enough game to have dedicated shelf space and cartridge art, but I'm not in a position to drop $1500 or whatever on individual games.

I've had some interested in modding consoles to be less power hungry. I see that the main board of the NES takes 5v DC. Would it be fine to bypass the 7805 voltage regulator and supply 5v directly to the board? Given that there are analog and digital RGB mods for the system, the whole RF modulator looks like dead weight. It's just needlessly hogging up power.

I've seen some mods like that. To USB power old consoles etc.

Ignoring voltage conversions, the Fami draws a tiny current, and the RF won't take much anyway. But but the risk of supplying it with less is that attachments draw much more than the System itself. I believe the Fami 3D system draws like 5x the whole computer itself.

I don't think I'll run into problems with attachments since I don't foresee myself using them. Much less on my front loader.

I'm not really knowledgeable about that, but isn't the Ampere the important bit? If you provide the console with direct 5V but more than enough Amps then it should be good even with attachments.

Voltage is the important bit if you don't want to damage things. You can supply the system with a larger amperage bank and not worry about anything. On that you are right. The system will only draw what it needs. Not sure if that really covers all the possible attachments though as I'm not familiar with their power needs.
