NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

does anyone here have an RGB modded NES? i'm just curious, i wanna say one dude put up a mega man 2 pic a while back in another thread but it's been so long since i saw someone make the investment

I think that was Shining, and I believe it was in this thread actually. He showed off how great the output was in combination with an XRGB Mini. And it does indeed look fucking awesome, but I can't help but feel it's somewhat blasphemous. :P Just think, to make that happen some other machine had to sacrifice its RGB PPU and no longer works correctly.

Someone should try to reverse engineer the RGB PPU. If that were to happen it would be a wonderful day.

Interesting. It doesn't have the Seal of Quality.
Hmm that is interesting. Never noticed that before. I wonder why it's absent. It's there on the PAL release. I guess it's because of the ESRB rating. Nintendo must have felt at that point in time that since the ESRB rating is there they don't have to put the Seal of Quality on there as well, since that was supposed to be Nintendo's sort of quality control.

ah, i guess it was! and yeah, i know a sacrifice must be made, its more the $ sacrifice (what, about $150 for the component on ebay, before the actual modding?) that gets me, i could swear someone mentioned the notion of an alternate in the future but ive not seen anything solid since then, sadly. if that was somehow something the Retron 5 worked around in the future, i'd be down but i don't see how...kills me to have this hardware & know shit could be looking better, but doesn't.

Yes, that was me and it was Mega Man 3 ;P

There is actually some good news regarding RGB modding a NES! Some guy over att universalppu.com is working on a custom made FPGA PPU that hopefully will replace the Playchoice-10 PPU. I don't know the technical details but you can check out the blog on his site.

Wow, that could be super neat!

I assume it would involve desoldering the old PPU and soldering in the new one?
(I'm completely clueless, but great image quality would just be so nice)

Anyone else able to make it to the last boss in Ninja Gaiden?

Never truly appreciated the game until did this recently. What a difficult/rewarding experience.

shit yes! thanks man, this is indeed great news. gonna follow this very closely, i already have a modder lined up when i have the part & was quietly hoping for some option before Halloween, when i intend to play Sweet Home finally! man i hope this works out.

also yeah i still see that MM3 shot you put up in my head, damn that was sharp

Yes I can and have done so many times, but I have never beaten Jacquio. I need to try again and keep the spinning jump attack you get in the last level and one hit kill my way to the end (IIRC).

People say that Ninja Gaiden II is easier, but it is not for me. I'm really bad at the game, I never really mastered the use of the shadows.

Popped up with my FFV SFC. Going to enjoy playing these on original hardware. Gotta get them translated of course...but still going to come out much cheaper than snagging an english SNES FF complete...or even cart only.

Game is legit tough, that stage 6 is almost an arcade game of its own.

When it comes to the infinite continue action platformers I'd say Holy Diver is tougher overall, though.

I find it more difficult for one reason: you now have to crouch. In the first game, you never need to crouch. Your sword has full range and can hit low enemies. In the sequel, the sword no longer has full range and you must crouch to hit low enemies. It bothered me enough to just put the game in my trade box and move on.

You're right. It's a rather frustrating game which I never felt compelled to master either.

But at least you don't lose double the energy when you get hit like in the even more disappointing third game of the series. I saw my brother curse his way through the end of that game and I am still amazed he could make it (I have never seen someone so enraged at a video game as when he was timed out (!) at one of the very difficult later levels). That's one game that looks impossible to me. And finite continues? Come the f**k on...

I never understood those changes. The Famicom version is so much more manageable. :( I still am having a hard time tracking it down too.

It's still worth it if you like the production values/aesthetics of the series, good music too. If only the Trilogy on SNES didn't have the reverse jump/slash buttons, that would be the way to go (password system). That being said, the music sounds much better with the NES soundchip than on the Super NES, where it's rather "limp", for lack of a better word.

Im going to have to post my castlevania 2 chronicle after i beat the game. Just started the game today ( my first cv was 3) and so ive gone from impressed, to ready to flying knee drop the cartridge, then back to impressed. Its such an eye opener when you need to write down every hint in the game...and then see they dont make sense until after you accidentally discover what you're supposed to do.

C2 is super easy once you know where to go (thanks to Nintendo Power maps back in the day I believe). Boss fights are a joke. But, I love the game.

First game I remember ever getting. I finished opening my presents on my birthday, and my dad was like "oh, yeah, one more thing..." and pulled it out of this closet that was up high enough us kids couldn't reach. I will never forget opening it and seeing that cover art for the first time.

And I've been addicted to Castlevania since.

That is very true. I actually sold my copy of Trilogy because I couldn't get past how nasty it felt to me.

I've found two pieces of Drac so far, but havent fought a boss yet. Or do you only fight them after unlocking whatever happens after finding all the parts?

Hmm well i'm going to go ahead with it. Trying to play all the classic CV titles back to back (1-IV, Bloodlines, Rondo, XX, 64, and finish with Symphony).

If you have the time I would suggest REbirth and Chronicles as well.

Man, every time someone mentions 64 I feel like playing it again.

I almost bought a famicom the other day but the guy was asking way too much for it. I'll probably wait till I'm done with my DC collection before really starting my famicom collection. I'm mostly picking FDS games though.

Oh yeah, forgot Chronicles. I actually dont own any version of 64 (I want legacy of darkness) yet. I guess i'll tackle Rebirth last (had it since launch, just never sat down to beat it).

Just bought an NES yesterday because of all these appreciation threads!! Pretty good condition, system and controllers work perfect. Was having some trouble getting solid coloured screens on boot up so I spent about half an hour cleaning the cartridge pins on each game with windex and a q-tip. Now it works pretty much every time I pop a game in. Amazing how this thing keeps on giving. Picked up these with it:

- Low G Man
- Wizards and Warriors
- Time Lord
- Code Name: Viper
- Super Mario Bros.

is Holy Diver actually worth playing? I've tooled around with it for a moment here or there but it didn't seem worth trying to even pass the 1st stage with. If there's something to it then I will gladly give it a bit of time however.

For that matter, what's the take on 8 Eyes?

It's solid. It' short and the level design is mostly just putting skeletons in the most annoying places possible but it's still far better than the dreck we've been getting.

I'll say. LoS 2 does seem like it'll be a good game, but not a good Castlevania game, much like DmC if that makes any sense (I had fun with DmC, but it still doesnt..."feel" like a Devil May Cry game).

Hey folks - I'm posting a link to an ebay auction but it's not my auction so I hope I'm not breaking any rules. This isn't the B/S/T thread and I think the NES love thread is the right place for this.

A friend of mine does NES case mods - and does them really well. His backlit Mega Man 25th anniversary mod was on the front page or Reddit and some other places lately. I believe it was also on Hackaday, which he wrote for for a while.

I asked him last weekend about his process for this stuff - he's been perfecting it for a few years now and has put a lot of work into it. If you want to know more about his stuff, check out his site: http://platinumfungi.com/

Here's the auction, but it might be more for curiosity's sake than anything else - he just posted it a couple of hours ago and it's already north of $800.

That is jawdroppingly awesome. I want one.

Finally.

That was the easiest boss fight in the history of hunting the night. I see what they were going for with the game, I really do...but the english version could've done with a much better translation, and each mansion should've had some boss guardian based on a Dracula part.

^congrats Tekno! man i wish i could pull that off...ill try again one day!

hey so i know it's been posted, but...what are the details of the RGB mod for NES? i know where the component comes from (barring that guy's custom effort..i emailed, no response yet sadly), but i recall reading here/elsewhere about bleeding colors, or reds in particular being somewhat off? i should just google comparison pics; its nothing ima do anytime soon, but i do have it in mind down the road.

it's the bitch of upscalers; you try not to be a graphics whore, but knowing things could be sharper/better colors, it kidna kills you not seeing that.

Just make sure you bring along a notebook or something. I tried to beat it without using guide...but had a few rough spots. Its funny how the hints make sense in retrospect.

Yea, I'd love to come across an RGB NES myself. I think there are like 3-5 chips that are somewhat compatible, but all of them (including the play choice ppu) display some colors incorrectly. As much as I would love to have one, I can't justify ~$200 for the chip just to get a better picture. I'm holding out for information on the hdmi NES bunnyboy is working on. RGB would be the best, but I'd enjoy hdmi just as much.

Fucking crazy that you managed it without a guide. I can do it now, but I definitely learned from Nintendo Power as a kid.

Also, isn't that the shitty ending? Gotta do it again and get the good ending!

Hey all, can anyone help me out and see what games are in this lot?

http://images.craigslist.org/3t93N33q15N45s75J6d6id78bb81a3a501013.jpg

  1. Mickey Mousecapade
  2. Castlevania
  3. Dr. Mario
  4. Monopoly
  5. Mega Man 2
  6. Ninja Gaiden
  7. Jeopardy
  8. Mike Tyson's Punch Out
  9. Mario Bros. 3
  10. Chip n' Dale Rescue Rangers
  11. Wheel of Fortune
  12. Top Gun
  13. Ninja Turtles 2: Arcade Game
  14. Battle of Olympus
  15. Mega Man 4
  16. Batman
  17. Exodus
  18. Mario/Duck Hunt
  19. Mario 3 (again)

Pretty solid lot of games if they're asking a decent price.

The one next to Batman looks like some sort of 10 commandments game.

Fucking crazy that you managed it without a guide. I can do it now, but I definitely learned from Nintendo Power as a kid.

I think the endings are reversed or something? I looked up the ending for beating it fast, and it says something about Simon dying and Dracula rising from his grave again?

lol probably just going to move on to Castlevania III...or maybe try a different style NES game since I dont want to get burned out before I finish my series playthrough.

Man I tried playing TMNT the other day at a friend's house and that is every bit as ridiculous as I remember it. Underwater timed bomb mission? Awesome.

I think Simon lives in the best ending. There are three. One he's dead, one you see him die at the grave, and one where he lives and you see Dracula's hand come out of the dirt.

Could be wrong.

Thanks a lot! They are asking $180, so I think I may have to pass. Never had an NES :(
