Netflix announces The Witcher: Blood Origin, a prequel series set 1,200 years before Geralt of Rivia

Hope this means they see the Witcher as cinematic universe type IP, and not a name they can attach to cheaper productions while abandoning the more expensive main line series.

Why would you compare anything to the production values of GOT?
Because they're both very popular shows from the same genre? I hope that they'll increase production values for season 2 now that they know the show is a hit and could become a bigger hit in future seasons.

More rape by Netflix.
Well at least they can't fuck up anymore stories since they will not base it on anything from books.

I swear Sapkowski is cursed. One movie and 2 TV shows and none of them are yet to properly tell the stories. Fucking books are even written in such way that it is pretty easy to make TV show out of it and yet they fucked twice.

Just realised I still haven't watched the Witcher.
Have to get on that.

Expect Xena Warrior Princess like Quality in both FX and writing.

I'm excited.

My cynical side says lots of people found the first season to be confusing as all hell given the timeline format so throwing a prequel on top may muddy the waters further maybe?

Is this stuff that’s been covered in the books?

Because they're both very popular shows from the same genre? I hope that they'll increase production values for season 2 now that they know the show is a hit and could become a bigger hit in future seasons.

GoT was the most biggest show on TV so justified a huge budget. You can’t budget the first season of a new show expecting it to gain that sort of hold. Go back to season 1 of GoT and see how much lower the production values are compared to the last season. You can’t just go full out on the first season on something like that, it’s a huge risk even for Netflix who throw money around. It seems like it’s done well so I’d expect season 2 to have more money put into it.

My wife and I are watching The Witcher now, so I can absolutely say I will pass on this project. Henry Cavill is by far the best thing about that show and that isn't saying much.

Will this be based on any sort of stories/lore/book made by Sapkowski?
Or is it a "Netlifx original story"? That's a really big factor in how exciting these news are.

inb4 the first Witcher was actually a transexual black man

Is this based off anything in the lore? O is it a cash grab based on the success of The Witcher?
Why not just make season 2 and 3 of the main show?
I mean I have hopes but have trepidation.

Ugh.

Another low effort Netflix show... yey! 😒

No, seriously, I was even thinking of opening a thread about it, how come almost all Netflix shows are so crappy and/or filled with sex scenes and woke stuff?

I swear to God, I could even accept the woke part, but the constant sex scenes... bah

If Netflix was to adapt World War 2 into a show, Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin and Churchill would resolve the conflict by fucking each other in the ass with olive oil.

I thought the Witcher was fantastic, I probably watched season 1 about 5 complete times. Curious why they would't follow up with season 2 unless maybe they are and this is just additional?

If for some reason people are right and this is just to woke up a very violent and misogynistic based era and theme around something other than a white male I could see it become a disaster, I think it'll be great.

ehhhhh i'll give them a bit of leeway since there is some good stuff in season 1 but they need to really deliver in season 2 before getting too excited about spinoffs. there is a reason (game of thrones, breaking bad) you wait until your show is actually good before jumping into spinoffs

Modern streaming service strategy appears to be

1) Grab hot IP
2) Make 1 season
3) Make another season that completely discards everything from the first season
4) Repeat until views drop

Jumping 1,200 years into the past just gives them more wiggle room to retcon and make stuff up, since fans won't be able to say "but then how does Geralt...?"

They are doing the same thing with Lord of The Rings.

"How do we create a show of an established franchise, but with female leads?........ I know! Set it thousands of years earlier!"

I really liked the Netflix show.

And the games.

And I'm currently reading the books.

I'd love a show that gives me more Witcher backstory. Get me a young replacement Vesemir or something. Running a witcher school. Could be cool.

Cool and all, but how about establishing the main series for a couple of seasons first instead of beginning the milking process immediately.

I didn't particularly like the regular Witcher Netflix show because Cavill got sidelined 90% of the show for much less interesting characters, and now the post by Fbh Fbh is basically confirmed. At least this didn't end with Cavill getting fucked in the ass by a brother/sister duo like Alucard.

Netflix is shit.
