And it stars Michael Sheen and Lucy Boynton.

EXCLUSIVE: Netflix has acquired the global distribution rights to period revenge thriller Apostle, written and directed Gareth Evans, with Michael Sheen, Lucy Boynton, Bill Millner, and Kristine Froseth joining the cast along with previously announced Dan Stevens, who was attached to the project early on. Filming is schdeuled to begin in April, with XYZ Films, Severn Screen and Evans’ One More One Production producing.

The pic follows man who travels to a remote island and attempts to rescue his sister after she’s kidnapped by a religious cult. The group demands a ransom for the sister’s return, undermining the man’s resolve to rescue her.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
Glad to see this guy getting more work. This seems a bit more out of his wheel house unless this is a martial arts movie. Then again his Indonesian Cult segment in VHS2 was the best in that entire series of movies easily.

Dan Stevens is fast becoming one of my favorite actors. Loved him in The Guest and Downton Abbey (him leaving was the jumping shark moment of that show), and he is killing it in Legion.

That said you had me at Gareth Evans.

100% agree.

Andrew Dominik, David Fincher, Joon-ho Bong, Martin Scorsese and now Gareth Evans...whew. Netflix, A24 and Amazon are killing it right now.

I watched that segment nearly 4 years ago and I still get creeped out thinking about it.

Netflix really covering all the bases... Sandler movies aren't for me, but this? This I can really dig.

God, I hope this movie is good. I'm a bit worried since The Raid 2's writing wasn't quite it's strongest attribute. I can't help but think I'll enjoy this no matter what, though. Evans is much too good a filmmaker to make something that isn't interesting, at least on a filmic level.

If for nothing else, and let's face it, it really is for nothing else, having the Sandler films makes it a lot easier for Netflix to take a gamble on projects like this. Not that I expect Evans is going to break the bank here, but even one surefire Sandler project makes a pick-up like this much easier.

This and the generic ass plot summary has me a bit worried. Evans and Stevens could be a winning combo, tho.

The plot summary for either Raid film is would not be anything to write home about either. Truth be told, those are films that are more about how Evans is telling the story than any inherent boldness in the material itself. Otherwise, you ran the risk of having a generic siege thriller and a generic gangster epic.

I totally forgot about that. He can do horror and dread really well

I'm pretty excited to see what he does with this

I don't know about the US but I know (anecdotally) plenty of people who picked up The Raid because of its release on Netflix in the UK. So this kind of makes sense.

I assume from the press release and his previous comments about taking a break from martial arts films before he does Raid 3 that he's not working with Iko Uwais this time.

Yup. He's said post-Raid 2 he wanted to take a break and make Raid 3 in 2018-2019 but I think the fact this movie starts production in April implies a 2018 release, so Raid 3 might not start till late 2018 early 2019 for a 2020 release.

The year is 1905. Thomas Richardson travels to a remote island to rescue his sister after she’s kidnapped by a mysterious religious cult demanding a ransom for her safe return. It soon becomes clear that the cult will regret the day it baited this man, as he digs deeper and deeper into the secrets and lies upon which the commune is built.

I love everything about this, but this part makes me warm and tingly inside knowing what they've potentially brought upon themselves. It's like reading the Taken tagline for the first time again

I'm stupid fucking excited for this flick. I think Gareth Evans is going to be a huge director in a couple years and is already well on his way there.

Evans can do unsettling and creepy, as seen in that VHS short, and he can do amazing action, so yeah, I'm really excited for this. I'm imagining that the action will be more brutal and raw, Eastern Promises-style, compared to the choreography of the Raid films

It sounds like the pitch was, "What if the cop from Wicker Man was a total badass."

That was awesome. I mean not dubstep alien slumber party awesome, but still.

I think he said he didn't want to make another martial arts movie after The Raid 2. So maybe not too much action?
I'm thinking it'll either be more of a thriller, more killing to survive and escape rather than fighting showcasws, or it'll lean more horror like his VHS cult short
