New 3DS System Update (StreetPass Relay Feature)

Just got my first experience of this today, two people from Italy and one from France. Previously had only met one person from France at a convention. Gonna take full advantage of this from now on.

Where did you get that?
With this job you are changing the MAC address of an ethernet connexion (eth1). You want to use wlan0 for the wifi.
I don't know what this part is for
Code:
`/bin/cat /proc/interrupts | /usr/bin/md5sum | /usr/bin/cut -b 1``/bin/cat /proc/interrupts | /usr/bin/md5sum | /usr/bin/cut -b 1`
(I suppose it's for some randomisation) but you may want to remove it for now and just use a single MAC address for your test.
0-59/6 means the job is run every 6 minutes starting from minute 0 on the clock. 3-59/6 same but starting from minute 3. it allow both jobs to alternate every three minutes. To make it two, change it to 0-59/4 and 2-59/4 respectively.

if it doesn't work search how you can ssh into it, then you will be able to make some tests.

Saw it on GBAtemp. Should've noticed the eth1 thing haha, no wonder it didn't work! I'll change it to wlan0 and try it tomorrow, thanks for the advice :)

Edit: Just met 5 folks through the GAF macs :)

Edit: And new Theatrhytm seems to be my "I'm not getting any data" game...

Just for reference:

ipconfig /all:

But they seem to be called different names on your set-up anyway but those were the one I needed to modify.

I also had problems getting Technitium to work so stuck with macshift.
Gah. Not even through Macshift am I able to change the MAC Address of the virtual router..

It's still stuck as 40-25-C2-2E-8E-85 no matter what, even if I do make the first two "02." Even tried making my disabled "Wi-Fi" connection the needed MAC address and nothing.

Googling around seems to not help either. Just can't figure out what I'm doing wrong exactly, or what I've done wrong to lead to this state.

Is there a way to do this via iPhone somehow?

hi guys, sorry to bother you. :p

I'm trying to make the hotspot with my android, following these steps from GBATemp:

I have problems with the step 3f, since those options doesn't appear on my app.
I don't know if it's related or not, but when I try to tether, it marks a Mac Address error.

anyone had the same problem? :/
I'm an idiot who has no idea what a mac address even is, but I do own an Android and want to get this working. How easy is this to set up?!

Actually is there a way for me to delete the virtual network I created altogether? It's still lingering there in Technitium and I think I might be able to fix it if I can set it up from scratch again, having it source it's MAC again from the Wi-Fi connection.

I refuse to be defeated by this >:[

Awww yeah. Got it working on my Galaxy Note 2. But it looks like I should alternate between my Japanese 3DS LL and my EU 3DS since only one of my devices get a StreetPass hit if both have wireless turned on.

I've been lucky so far I think, with a DD-WRT router both my partners DS and my own usually get streetpasses simultaneously. Most of the time it's the same mii we get, the 5 gaffers I streetpassed earlier arrived on both systems at the same time.

yeah, so I set my wife's XL up last night to get her a bunch of streetpasses as a surprise. I spent an hour today trying to figure out why I wasn't getting any streetpasses once I got in from work when I was trying.

I checked her XL... loads of streetpasses from today. DUH. and of course, since I streetpassed her XL once I got in, and she's the streetpass on the MACS I'll have to wait until tomorrow and remember to turn off her wireless next time.

If anyone has streetpassed a Mii from Massachusetts called Katy who's favourite colour is yellow, that's her.

FINALLY GOT IT WORKING

LAWDDDDDDDDD

Basically, I had to get rid of what was Local Area Connection* 11. Uninstalled Microsoft Hosted Network Virtual Adapter, and did did the entire command prompt thing, making sure that my Wi-Fi address was changed beforehand. Basically, in Technitium the virtualized router should not show up there because it should be going through your Wi-Fi connection. Thanks to Hiccup, Starwolf and all the other helpful people here.

My Mii is Arvin from Ontario. Hope to see y'all :)

don't worry, I'm an idiot too... it's easy if your phone is rooted, just follow step by step and you might get lucky... aparently, my phone (Galaxy Ace with CM7) is not supported.

I didn't manage to make it work, I got my wifi tethered, the 3DS detects the wifi, but it doesn't detect the Nintendo Zone and can't "browse the internet" either, so I guess I'm not receiving any data.

HOWEVER:
I'm trying an alternative with this... but I don't really know if it's gonna work or not.

I'm using this:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=diewland.changemac

to set one of the MAC address listed here on neogaf... then I make a wifi hotspot named "attwifi"...

my 3DS detected the Nintendo Zone, I can enter and even browse the internet...
I even received a Nintendo Zone swapnote... but I haven't got any Streetpass yet... does it takes a while to get SP's?

Dammit. I'm not rooted.

Dammit. I'm not rooted.

you should totally root your phone, there's many advantages with that.

it's really easy, it's basically, copying and pasting files to your SD and try to not get scared to boot your phone in recovery mode to install stuff; you'll feel like a hacker, LOL...

you should browse here to get started, http://forum.xda-developers.com/ , just search your phone model + root and you'll find instructions easilly.

Fuck, so I really want to do this, but my only computer that has a wireless card doesn't have a working ethernet port (long story). I have an android phone, but it's an older shitty one (Optimus V) which makes me concerned on rooting it. I have a Kindle Fire (original), I should look around, I guess that would probably work if I rooted it? Was hoping there was an easy tool for stupid people like me out by this point :(

Edit: Hmm, our router apparently supports DD-WRT firmware, but I've never done custom firmware on a router. Fuck, I guess I can give that a go haha. >_>

Well fuck, my router is one of the "neutered" linksys ones which makes it way crazier to do anything with. Guess I'm going to have to try rooting my phone and giving that a shot, mainly bummed because it would have been nice to be able to run that DD-WRT script that ran through all the MAC address automatically :(

since my Galaxy with full wifi tethering grabs its wifi connection from my router, could that possibly be the cause im not getting any streetpasses?

stupid questions part 2

Got it running on a win 8 lap. I can connect and see my online friends. How long should I wait before I get a streetpass?

Dunno. I've had issues getting it working at all tonight. was doing it fine at work, and at home the other day.

Edit: It had lost the network sharing settings on my lan connection. We're rolling now.

I have it, presumable working... It only tags 1 person per mac? And I currently have 3x 3Ds in the house. Does each one get a tag, or is it whoever wins the race?

I have two in mine. And haven't got a single pass yet :( I also notice that if I close my 3DS it disconnects from Virtual Router.

After 2 hours nowhere near getting my phone rooted, there's a million different guides for my phone that are all different and are also old (which is probably part of the problem as the phone is over 2 years old). None of the other options work for me: our router is DD-WRT compatible technically but is a neutered model, both our computer and laptop that have wireless also built in have non-working ethernet ports (freak thunderstorm fried both, along with a TV and some other stuff) so I can't go that route, and I'm not getting anywhere with my phone, and the only other android device I have won't work in this manner (Kindle Fire). Ironically someone figured out a way to get it to work with the Nintendo Wifi adapter which I used to have, but got rid of years ago.

Super frustrating. I only have 20 streetpasses in over a year carrying it all over the place, and 5 of those are my wife and nintendo miis, and 14 of the remaining 15 I got on the same day when AC launched at Gamestop and there was a shitload of people there. I'd buy those new games in a heartbeat if I could get this working, but as it is I still only have three different puzzles and can't really get anywhere in Find Mii without using a million play coins. If we had money I'd see if I could get one of the recommended routers for this, I might see if maaaaybe I can swing that $22 repeater being recommended on Amazon that (apparently) works with no special setup for this by default. LET ME USE YOUR FEATURES NINTENDO

Got this to work.

Some tips:

Realized early on I couldn't get this through my dongle, but, it works on the on-board wifi on my laptop.

When in doubt, reboot, reset, etc.

Instead of doing the macshift, you can do network adapter->properties->configure->advanced->Locally Administered MAC Address-> and type in the spoof MAC value there. My dongle did not have that option. If your wifi doesn't have that option, you'll need to find another way.

So, that takes macshift out of the equation. VRM is painfully unstable. If you run into any errors on startup, either uninstall, start/stop the service or decouple your shared network (properties->sharing->deselect the top checkbox. Hit ok. Then redo it and select the virtual wifi miniport network again. Restart VRM)

Very touchy on the windows end, if this is all being done at the router, you're probably good.

Are these relays sending a pass for each game regardless of the player behind them?

I tagged once yesterday to test it out, cool. Got an MH3U tag and one from Etrian Odyssey 4, among others.

Tagged with two of the internet relays today and got two different Miis from different countries and also got notifications for MH3U and ET4 as well.

But when I went to Etrian Odyssey 4 to pick up my new guild card, one of them was a very slightly updated one of the guy from yesterday, including MH3U saying I had an update but the mail box having no new card. I assume they were both from that same guy, although I didn't get his Mii again. What's going on?

EDIT: Looks like I also got a Nintendogs tag that belongs to a Mii I also didn't get a plaza tag from either. I'm confus.

Nintendo should open this officially to every router, not only his own Nintendo Zone.
Every public wifi, without being endorsed by Nintendo, becomes streetpass relays. How cool is that?

The 3DS seems to disconnect whenever you do the following:
-(in game or something) close and return to home menu
-Enter sleep mode or wake from sleep mode
-Open something (notifications, web browser, Nintendo zone or any other channel)
-Turn off wireless switch (duh...)
It should soon reconnect.

Yes, the Streetpass relay separates each game. The data for a game is only replaced when someone with that game passes. This is why you were getting a different Mii in the plaza.

The game specific MAC addresses (this table) might be better for tagging Miis associated with games (but bear in mind when they hit the relay they would be sharing more data than just the plaza and that game so you will still have the effect, its just say you hit the EO4 MAC the Mii you get should be the same as the EO4 game but if you also got Mario Kart data from tagging that MAC that may well be a different person).

no hits yet. i just don't understand :/
i have:

- set up my S3 as a relay with Wi-Fi Tether. It's up and running without errors
- the phone connects to my Netgear DG834 when at home
- the 3DS connects to my router as well
. the 3DS is in sleep mode

the hell is going wrong??

That's not so bad, as sometimes double tagging is beneficial too. But, does this happen with the "real" relays too?

I got an initial 5 SP hits, but, only received 3 overnight. Weird. I'd have thought I'd get a bunch. Think I'm going to have to implement a script to cycle the MACs to take full advantage of it.

Yes as the description on Nintendo web pages said the following (emphasis mine):
You will not receive any StreetPass data from the relay point if you are the first person to pass with a specific game's StreetPass data or if the relay point currently has your StreetPass data.

What is odd is I have yet to experience a double tag either in real life or online. The former I would expect when doing a tour of the zones but the latter can be explained by me being selective (I pick a non-linear MAC sequence and do not use a full range...I always include the main MACs though)

Your phone may be confusing by thethering and connecting to your router? It can't do both at the same time.
Try switching off the router completely and use your working 3G connection.

Do it dude. I'm using DD WRT and I get a new SP every 2 minutes w/ a MAC changer script. This is insane

Just to repeat for those who don't know. Use this script for the DD WRT Cron Job. It changes your MAC Address every 2 minutes. I've been getting new SP for hours upon hours

Code:
0-59/4 * * * * root ifconfig eth1 down && ifconfig eth1 hw ether 40:53:50:4F:4F:`/bin/cat /proc/interrupts | /usr/bin/md5sum | /usr/bin/cut -b 1``/bin/cat /proc/interrupts | /usr/bin/md5sum | /usr/bin/cut -b 1` && ifconfig eth1 up
2-59/4 * * * * root ifconfig eth1 down && ifconfig eth1 hw ether 4E:53:50:4F:4F:`/bin/cat /proc/interrupts | /usr/bin/md5sum | /usr/bin/cut -b 1``/bin/cat /proc/interrupts | /usr/bin/md5sum | /usr/bin/cut -b

No luck for me, I stayed abou two hours on the network and changed a couple of MACs, still no luck.

I'm pretty sure I changed my MAC address correctly since I could see it while using the ipconfig comand. And VR was working since I could connect and see people online. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong.

Edit: I just noticed that if I try to use Nintendo Zone app it won't connect to it. Even if I have internet access (I was able to upload AC pictures to facebook).

okay i just erased my router from the phone settings, lets see how it goes!

edit: apparently it's not enough. Should I disconnect my 3DS as well?

when in sleeping mode it just tries to connect to everything, this is how you can have both streetpass and spotpass in a house with a router and an extra 3DS. Streetpassing doesn't use the 3DS established connections.

Did you put any password in your tethering? it should be blank. No mistake in the network name or MAC address? Do you have a computer that can connect through tethering to make sure it works well otherwise?

Can you see what happens on your phone? whether something tries to connect and why it fails, etc.

[edit] did you make sure you were in infrastructure mode and not ad hoc?

everything's correct: no password, MAC address and netweork name. Sadly i don't have a wifi card, and Wi-Fi tether works without errors (seems to be constantly upding/dlding a small aount of bits)

when i try to select Softap (master) or Softap for Samsung (master) it starts with errors so I have to roll back to Auto. Not sure what the correct Infrastructure option for my S3 is, though

thanks for all the help mate, it's really appreciated!
