I played the crap out of Wake Island in the Battlefield 1942 demo...And loved it. Must have put 100 hours into that demo. Then I got Battlefield Vietnam, and put a lot of time into it...Although it wasn't spectacular. Anyway, I can't wait for Modern Combat, and Battlefield 2. Going to own.

The almighty commander
This function is what´s really going to define this game during clan wars. The commander is not a player on the field, he is more of an entity controlling and supervising what happens on the battlefield. He has a top down view of the map and he can call in artillery, drop ammo crates and set waypoint for his players. In fact, the commanders view looks like a completely different game, more like an RTS thingy, Command&Conquer style really. As long as your teams radar stations are intact he can see _everything_ on the map. And where he can see he can shoot artillery - although the artillery is being balanced with a long reload time, so, the commander will have to choose his targets wisely . The only way to stop him therefore is to take out the radar stations and the artillery. It´s easy to imagine the first few minutes of a clan war is going to be all about commander vs commander, them trying to kill off each others radars and artillery. If your teams commander can't see or shoot he´s pretty useless. But radars and the artillery can always be repaired, Im guessing that the commanders best friend is going to be some poor bastard playing as engineer standing by to repair his toys :)
Since the commander can see it all, there´s no use for old tricks like contesting on roofs etc. It will be very interesting to see how the clan community decides to use the commander.

wowow

Battlefield Vietnam did not quite live up to the awesomeness that was Battlefield 1942. I can only hope that's because Battlefield 2 is the REAL Battlefield sequel.

That Almighty Commander thing sound very very cool! I wasn't really interested in this game yet (although I really like BF1942), but if this is done right this seems a must buy! :)

Yeah, I can see that commander thing working out real well on the average server...

The original BF's been out for how many years now, and the servers are still filled with idiots who do nothing but hang out on the airfields and wait for planes, and then proceed to just bomb the enemy's main base once they do get in a plane. I highly doubt that the average public server moron will follow orders from any commander, and I'm sure that the average commander will be an equally typical moron calling artillery strikes on his own team's bases, etc.

In theory, though, it all does sound good, though. A lot of the little gameplay issues from BF42 seem to have been addressed (spotted enemy units showing up on the map, points for support roles, etc). It looks like, if the game gets word-of-mouth as good as the original, it may be the title that finally forces me to upgrade my comp. Of course, if there's no demo released (a la BFV), it'll all be moot.

well its got the guys who made Desert Combat working on it,

thats all I needed to here SOLD

Well, if you look at the newest news post on DesertCombat.com...

As you know, Trauma Studios has been aquired by Digital Illusions, makers of Battlefield 1942.
Now we are working hard on a new game based on the Battlefield 2 engine technology. This has kept us busy and therfore put DesertCombat on hold.

Vlad I remember reading that only the highest ranked (based on their stats/experience on other servers also) player on each team can be a commander (then if they decide not to be, the next person in line has the opportunity). This should eliminate smacktards being able to take advantage of the role.

Well, that sounds like a good idea, as long as teamplay-oriented things are weighted higher than just kills.

One thing I'd love to see is a sort of tutorial/certification system that makes people complete a test for certain vehicles before being allowed to use them online. I've seen way too many people online take a bomber, helicopter, etc and proceed to crash it into a building about five seconds after they get in.

If they didn't want to completely keep people out of the vehicles, then maybe completing a vehicle test could make a special icon appear by your name letting teammates know that they can ride as a passenger in your vehicle without being driven off a cliff or anything.
