New(?) Blue Dragon scans

It's probably slightly better in Blue Dragon... but not "next gen" like... I'm sure PS2, XBOX for GC could handle water such as that without much difficulty. However, I haven'tr seen the physics and that could make the difference. But the water is just a small part of BD's beauty though. I'm really like the look of it.

Did you watch the movies?

And before I'm accused of trolling, I want to make one thing perfectly clear. The game looks stellar artwise - would make a fantastic Saturday morning cartoon. However, I've learned my lesson with waiting endlessly for Japanese RPG's. I've waited more than 2 years for FFXII and KHII, though I will finally be able to play them next year. I've drooled over Rogue Galaxy and Grandia III for over a year now.

I will NOT get sucked in again, no matter how nice it looks. Eventually if the game is any good, I will get to play it when the 360 will have been out a while and hopefully had a pricedrop. Until then, I will FINALLY be in RPG Nirvana with my PS2.

They are falling for Artoon's Eyecandy of Toriyama's great artwork as well as Uematsu's great music. But they all seem to be ignoring the most important thing, this game is by Artoon, which could be a very bad thing for the gameplay. Lost Odyssey on the other hand is in at least capable hands at Freeplus with ex-SE staff. I could understand people really anticipating that game, not this one.

This game just gets better and better every time I see it. I love the claymation look. Quick question though does anyone know if the all white area's will be where the battles will take place in the final game?

Why'd they choose Artoon of all companies?

Who is to say their problem is programming? They did a platforming game, those should be left to Naughty Dog, Nintendo, Rare, Ubi Soft and Insomniac. A very short list.

I have FF: CC and I can vouch and say that the water in Blue Dragon looks much better. Kameo also has amazing water, do you think Kameo or FF: CC has better water effects?

I guess u can never make everyone happy. I also thought the water in blue dragon looks a lot better than any water in any game...it looks very realistic...if not close to the water effects in CG movies.

No offense, but what's the matter with being excited with anticipation for a game? It's like people who say things like this want the game to suck so that they can quote this a year from now and say, "I told you so!"

Anyway, Artoon might be doing a lot of the legwork, but its direction is coming from Sakaguchi and Co. People were quick to devalue Level-5's contribution to DQ8, saying that it was mainly Armor/Bird/SE, and here, people are saying the opposite.

Sure, a lot will happen between now and BD's release, but from what little has been shown so far, it seems to be on the right track.

BD's water is beautiful, and reminscint of water in certain animated movies, but realistic wouldn't have been the first word that sprang to my mind. Part of its charm is it's glistening "cartooniness" imo.

Hope that we don't have to wait at leat a year for the English version.
Great vid from Blimm blim site.
The final game will have better textures. I can't wait for this gem.
At last the DQ / FF godness alike for he Xbox360 (have to miss them, cause don't want to own a pspooh2)
Their next game Cryon?? Just saw some picture>>A RPG?

The water looks basically like real life in that pic but its somehow not next-gen enough?

How can it look like real life when it is reflecting a claymationish world and has sparkle sprinkles?

It does look good, but nowhere close to "real".

Wow. Finally. Looks like the Xbox 360 is going to get the type of games the Xbox would have not gotten in a million years. Looks amazing. And it's coming out next year? Sweeeet.

Feel the same way. It's stylized, and beautiful, but not real. In this game environment, I'd say it fits perfectly. And yes, I've seen the trailer and feel no need to bash my head against a wall.

Wasn't too hot about the first screens in the mag scans, but now I'm totally gay for the claymation. The ship looks awesome, totaly hoping for it to be controllable, not just in action scenes, but in the whole world. That would give some seriously positive flashbacks from Beyond Good & Evil.

LOL!!! Seriously, those commercials make it seem like Mistwalker needs to rely solely on Toriyama's appeal to sell the game. Reminds me of the FFXII pack in with DQVIII. Hopefully, Toriyama is more compelling.

By the way, PheonixDark, MITSUDA not uematsu did the music for Chrono Trigger. I thought that was pretty common knowledge? It was, afterall, the game that pretty much launched his career and made him famous.

erm, no, the water looks startlingly close to real, from the way it flows to the way light is refracted off its surface. watch the trailer, and hit your head against the wall a couple of times.

OMGOSH I am teh blind fanboy. You used the word "refracted" while describing light, so you MUST know what you're talking about. In truth, this is the most real water I've ever seen. This water looks more real than reality!

WHOOOOOOOOOSH! I CAN HEAR IT FLOWING INSIDE MY COMPUTER SCREEN! :lol

Sorry dude, it looks nowhere near real. Although I already have, I don't need to look at the trailer. When you see a real photograph or scan of water, do you really need to "see it in motion" to tell that it looks real? I guess I'll go hit my head against a wall a couple of times until I'm so delirously that I start trying to take drinks from my computer screen. :lol

Riiiight, because Sakaguchi and Uematsu are nobodies... give me a break.

This thread has become an exercise in splitting hairs. The "realness" of the water seems to be a point of contention for a lot of people. Personally, real or stylized, who cares... can we at least agree that it looks pretty nice in the context of these videos?

When I saw the water, what came to mind was whether you'll be able to swim in it and explore a cool, submerged city or world. That's a more compelling thought to me than whether it looks like real water...

Holy crap... seeing that video totally sold me. Seriously, just the artwork and the music hit me in a way that I haven't been in a long time. I want this game. :)

Sigh, let me explain more clearly.

Original Commercial dialogue:
Sakaguchi: Toriyama-san Amazing!
Toriyama: That so?

yellowAce Commercial dialogue:
Sakaguchi: Toriyama-san Amazing!
Toriyama: That so? Now, suck my dick.

As in how low will you go to suck up? The way the commerical is made you'd think the only think the mattered about Blue Dragon is that Toriyama was involved. They make it SEEM as if the only thing important is Toriyama, forget their ability or the gameplay or the music. They're selling the game on the fact that Toriyama is involved, and I feel bad that they have to reduce themselves to that in order to sell the game to Japan. Oh noes, I'm such a jerk. Give me a break! Does that make things clear for you?

<rant>

Crying out loud Mistwalker is the new MGS4; people pissing and whining back and forth at the drop of a hat. The water is real! Nuhuh, it's not! Uhuh!! Nuhuh!! Fanboy! Fan****!

SHUT UP!! It's looks nice! DONE!!

Come on, we don't have a freaking clue how the battlesystem works and everyone's trying to make this game out to be the ruination or salvation of the 360!! Honestly, if it wasn't for Sakaguchi's namesake alone I doubt anyone on GAF would give a **** about this game! I mean, heck, that one guy didn't even know it was Mitsuda who worked on Chrono Trigger and not Uematsu and yet went around saying it was the same team (even though 3 people isn't what I'd call the "same team") and others believed it! Hell, probably the vast majority of the people excited about this game don't have a clue about the talent involved or what they've been involved in, they're just mindlessly running on hype because of "Teh Gooch"! Grah!!!

<Gets off High-Horse to let drink at the stream>

Bah, I'm starting to think this more the standard rather than the exception at GAF. Or am I just new here?

Mistwalker and the 360 interface itself are the only things keeping me interested in the system for now. I like the look of all the Mistwalker games announced, though I'm very concerned about how BD will actually play given who is programming it. However, it will be Summer/Fall next year before the first game comes out in Japan. Add 6 months conversion time to English (being generous, probably more like 8 mos- year) and I won't be able to play any of these games until at least 2007 in all probability. So unless MS pull some rabbit out of the hat at E3 (I hate Halo, so that sure won't be it), no way I'm getting a 360 in the foreseeable future.

But I might eventually due to this game and Mistwalker. I'm simply amped that the RPG's I've been waiting on forever are finally coming this next year. 2006 will be an RPG gamer's dream on the PS2. Maybe, just maybe 2007 can be so for the 360 even though I expect PS3 to get the majority.

But anyone who doesn't think this looks good is either a hater or a moron.

The Chrono Trigger was composed by Nobuo Uematsu, and Yasunori Mitsuda, AND Noriko Matsueda.

Yasunori Mitsuda was in charge of everything music. He got in about 35 tracks; right about then, though, is when he started getting an ulcer (or however you spell that). S-E then appointed Uematsu to finish the rest of it, which he did.
For the style of the battle theme he wanted to do, though, he simply was having a hard time doing--that's when he called assistance from Noriko Matsueda.
So, approximately...
Yasunori Mitsuda 60%, Nobuo Uematsu almost 40%, and Noriko Matsueda one single track.

Art was by Toriyama, duh. And it was directed by Sakaguchi and Horii

I'd say it's close enough to be the same team.

Wow, didn't know that at all. I wonder if that's why he never thought it was his best work? Stressful conditions? Might be a bit much to ask, but which tracks belong to which person (you don't have if you don't wanna, but I appreciate it if you do)? I guess, it's a fair enough arguement to say the same team then, though I still think using the phrase "same team" is highly excessive. We're talking about 3 members from a team of what was it, ~50?

Also, you spelled, right: "ulcer".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrono_Trigger_(soundtrack)

Yasunori Mitsuda was the composer of most of the original soundtrack, with contributions by Nobuo Uematsu. Uematsu composed Silent Light, Mystery of the Past, People Who Threw Away the Will to Live, Bike Chase, Underground Sewer, Primitive Mountain, Burn! Bobonga!, Tyran Castle, Sealed Door, and Demo - Mystery of the Past; he also cowrote Boss Battle 1 with Noriko Matsueda.

As for the point about them relying heavily on Toriyama, well, his artwork is ultimately what we see in these videos, so it stands to reason that there would be a focus on his stuff. He's sort of well-known, too. :lol Anyway, rants aside, I just think it was cool because they do show Sakaguchi, and they display Uematsu's name during the video clips. So, the teaser does feel like it's a collaborative piece. Magna Carta, on the other hand, is a crappy RPG that relied almost entirely on Hyung-Tae Kim's artwork to sell it. I'm not getting that feeling here.

Thanks for the list Ghibli. I really should bookmark Wikipedia, honestly, no matter how weird or obscure the information you want, Wiki will have. Not that the composers and their tracks for Chrono Trigger is THAT obscure...

Anyway, I still feel like the video is using Toriyama to sell the game. I mean, "Toriyamasan sugoiiii!" is just terrible. They even have him drawing like he's making the game, and yeah in part he is, but it comes across like he's the ONLY one involved. Bah, whatever the case, I should at least apologize for the rather condescending tone in my reply... the thread was kinda pissing me off... kinda... not a lot... just a blip really... and I vented in part at you, my bad. I'm still right, though!!

You know, this is what kids licensed shovelware will look like on X360 and PS3 in 5 years time.

these shots remind me of engie benjie in the UK (kids animated series). Looks great BTW.

HOw esle are you going to convince or attract attention for games on X360 in japan? You honestly believe the japanese would give 2 shits about this game if it werent for those 2? I dont.

Besides, its a teaser, the real trailer will broadcast nearer to launch. Its marketing, plain and simple. 2 legends working on a X360 RPG, they have every right to shout about it.

I've never played Blinx, but it's pretty lame and without merit to be apprehensive about Blue Dragon because Artoon is coding the game. I'm sure the Gooch and co. will be adamant about quality.

This reminds me of that dude here on GAF who was bashing the way the water looked so unrealistic in a game awhile back, only to find out later he was looking at a fucking PHOTOGRAGH! :lol Yes, he actually complained over and over about the unrealistic look of REAL water. :lol

In other words, you're wasting your breath m0dus. They are going to see what they want.

Er . . . blah blah blah

Name-calling and forumtoughguyspeak don't prove your point. Say something fucking worthwhile. How can it look real when it's reflecting a cartoon world????? You still haven't, and probably will never address this. And let's forget that the xbox 360 is not going to anywhere even near approximate the intricacies of the real world physical interactions in running water.

While you may not have a concerning eye, I could count on my fingers the number of computer generated images that I think could be mistaken for real life. Test me on it. I DARE you to find more than one piece of CG that I can't discern as fake. On renderfarms with 100x the power of 360, whatever, I don't care. My suspension of belief is lost during almost every movie I go to nowadays when I see badly implemented attempts at faking reality.

I never said the water looked bad, it looks awesome. I'm not a 360 hater, or a Mistwalker hater, check my post history. I'll own a 360 within the next month, and this game when it comes out, on the cheap too, as I have a brother that works for MS.

As an artist, as someone who's spent a lot of time simply observing reality, I don't think it looks real at all. If you do, that's okay, heck you probably enjoy modern movies a lot more. But telling me to bang my head against the wall because I don't see things with your vision is pretty ridiculous, and oddly defensive. Look at my original post, I simply asked a question.

That's not exactly right...or anywhere near right. :P CT had 3 directors: Takashi Tokita, Yoshinori Kitase and Akihiko Matsui, and it was produced by Kazuhiko Aoki. Sakaguchi and Horii are just credited as "supervisors". Another thing...saying that Uematsu worked on 40% of the soundtrack when he composed around 5 songs out of a 64-track soundtrack is a bit of a stretch. :P

Wouldn't really say it almost looks real, but, it looks very nice in the world it's in...

Oh and the way it flows isn't exactly that realistic either, but, I won't get into that... ^^;

Good to see more from this game. :)
