I made the mistake of buying a bunch of games when I started the hobby and now they just sit. Now I force myself to only buy a game at a time to try and spread them out and give myself enough time to actually play them. =)
Yup. I'm very selective now. Also since I moved I've pretty much had to stick to games that play well with two.I made the mistake of buying a bunch of games when I started the hobby and now they just sit. My problem was that went from competitive tabletop gaming in the form of heroclix to board games so everything seemed super cheap in comparison but I bought a lot of stuff that was similar to what I was playing before and my wife just doesn't like super competitive 1 on 1 stuff. I may never play war of the Ring.Likewise. I had a burst of buying a bunch of games again around Christmas last year, since I had slacked off for a bit. Now, my wishlist is really small and is pretty much only new releases and keeping up with Arkham:LCG.
When I got into board gaming, I approached it like I do all my other hobbies and collections.
Let's take movies/music as an example.
-Identify favorites
-Get classics
-Identify missing genres and fill gaps
-Complete series/discographies
-Once you own everything older and available you wanted, keep up on current releases
This always seems to be my plan of attack, no matter the hobby. I've done this with board games, video games, movies, music, lego, 40k, and a handful of other collections. This means I tend to be pretty exhaustive in my research and each collection shows depth and knowledge of the chosen subject.
Just put in a big order for some LotR stuff, plus got Black Riders so I can finally start playing the saga campaign.
Ive been looking at a ton of solo play games and realized I have a hard time getting into ones that include miniatures or grids. The closer to 85% card only based and up games I tend to be more into.
Because of this I've been heavily considering Arkahm more and Mage Knight less... But I'm not really into what I hear of Arkham only really being fun the first time you play each story (ie low replay value)
I would say Mage Knight is far more Euro than a typical miniatures game.
I've been having a rest from the Board game scene but just got my copy of Nemos war, a great solo game and it looks like I'm right back into the hobby.
Yeah I honestly don't think I've played a euro board game yet, but video games of similar nature never really grabbed me. I do feel a board game would hold my attention better though.

I actually just played Mage Knight for the first time last night. It reminds me a lot of games like Might and Magic or Endless Legend.

Skip Arkham. Get Eldritch Horror instead. Same coop Cthulhu goodness with half of the fiddly bullshit.
Fuck Space Hulk: Death Angel. >:| I was doing so well and got to the last location then death spiral.
Even though Arkham:LCG has some persnickity scenario-specific rules that are easy to miss, I find it to be a much more fun and rewarding experience than Eldritch. I still enjoy Eldritch, from the few times I've played, but I don't get a huge narrative experience out of it, and it feels as if there's not a lot of strategy involved.
With how luck dependent the game is I rarely feel like I earn my wins or losses. I really like the game except for the low chance of success.Haha! I don't know how many times I've died in that game after thinking "Man, I think I might actually win this one!". Just like what often happens in the board game, when things go bad they go really bad. The house of cards can fall pretty quickly. I always feel like I truly earn the wins.
The host of my weekly game nights just had a baby, so I'll probably only be gaming with my wife and daughter for a number of weeks. I'm hoping to move soon if I get lucky and get the job I want, to a town in California even smaller than the one I live in now in South Carolina, but I looked at MeetUp and it seems like there are some big game groups in nearby towns. So I might be waiting a while before I can play anything serious or complex.
Makes sense then. OG Arkham board game is super fiddly, and I'd never play it over Eldritch. My B. I thought he was talking about AH boardgame, not LCG.
Sumter. What town are you currently living in in South Carolina? I used to live there, so I'm curious. Where I lived, Sumter, had a really tiny gaming scene based mostly around Magic when I was there.
Sumter.
The MtG scene is still the only real scene. When I drive past Ray's on a Friday night, the parking lot is completely filled for Friday Night Magic and every prerelease still draws a ton of people. The RPG group that meets there does well on numbers too I think. Board gaming in-store died last year when the people who were kind of the 'leaders' of the group had a new semester of school start up though. A guy moved here at the beginning of the year and stopped in at Ray's looking to play some games. This was one of the times I went in for weekly game night and sat there for an hour waiting to see if anyone would turn up. He is who eventually started the game night I go to now, because he couldn't get behind the whole "the store has a game night every week, but it closes at 8pm every night but Friday" thing, so he started hosting. But like I said, he's got a two-day old baby at this point, so he's out of the mix for a bit. There is another guy in town who started a Gaming and RPG Facebook group that has grown kind of big, but he had had some medical stuff going on lately and also has a lot of time being taken up by a game he is designing and trying to get published. His main interest is RPGs though. For X-Wing and Armada, I drive to Ready to Play and Firefly in Columbia.
No shit. You are from Sumter and are in Champaign, IL right now? I'm only a transplant, been here almost a decade after getting stationed here when I was still enlisted. A guy from here though, he grew up here, just moved to Champaign, IL about two or three weeks ago. He was in the X-Wing group here and will probably be hanging around stores playing that there. He said when he flew out to look for a place to live, that there is an awesome gaming store like within a block's walking distance or something from the apartment he was gonna move into.Ha! That's pretty crazy that you're in Sumter. I grew up there. 19 years. Yah, the store I went to doesn't even exist anymore, and I've not heard of Ray's. In any case, I don't understand gaming stores that close that early. The ones here (Champaign, IL) open in the afternoon so they stay open until later.
Going to Columbia was generally a bit of a slog, depending on where you were going. I don't recall either of the ones you mentioned. There was a gaming and comic shop I gamed at a lot for the short time I lived in West Columbia that was nice, but I don't remember the name of the place.
Anyway, my brother in law in Sumter would definitely be interested in a board gaming group, and my sister probably would too. I'll shoot them a message and then send you a PM.
So Fallout is up for pre-order at CSI. I did something I never thought I'd do and placed a pre-order for it. I figure worst case (game sucks/I don't like what I see), I can either cancel OR sell it to someone who misses out. I suspect this game will be quite tough to get a hold of at release.
[DEAD OF WINTER] ouch wasn't aware.. i just saw the game being played, but i'm not a fan of "every turn you can die because you know.. random" :XI'm not a fan of Dead of Winter. It does a lot of things right, but having a 1 in 12 chance of instantly dying whenever you move or fight feels really dumb.
Pandemic Legacy and Scythe are both amazing games. I'd recommend getting those 2, unless you've already come close to finishing Pandemic Legacy before.
ehhh ..So is Descent 2nd edition main game like out of print or something? I can only seem to find it pretty expensive online...
I don't want to just jump and grab one and then a week later they are back in stock selling for 65 bucks or something
Right on! Hope you dig it as much as I do. It's a really beautiful game, super high quality pieces and the different heroes are really fun to experiment with.Just ordered this from Amazon as it is something right up my alley. Thanks for bringing it to my attention!
Sid Meier's Civilization: A New Dawn is a strategy board game in which two to four players act as the rulers of history's most memorable empires. Over the course of the game, players will expand their domains, gain new technologies, and build many of humanity's greatest wonders. In the end, one nation will rise above all others to leave its indelible mark upon history.
This new game presents players with an undiscovered country to conquer, built from beautifully illustrated map tiles. These would-be conquerors construct and populate the map with barbarians, natural resources, and city-states, then formulate their plans for how they will shape this world to their vision. Their exact goals, however, change with each game. Agendas are detailed on victory cards, three of which are drawn during set up. Players race to become the first to accomplish one agenda on each of these victory cards, spreading throughout the world and ensuring their civilization's place as the greatest world power.

FFG is killing me going into Gen Con this year. So many games to check out. Flying out Wednesday, can't wait to see some of this stuff in person hopefully.

ehhh ..
iirc they are slated for reprint by ffg shortly (nerkhall//chains the rust and core descent 2nd ed) so you might want to wait a bit..
depends on you i assume
I'd very much recommend against Captain Sonar unless it's the new small-player-count version (is that out yet?) or unless you're very likely to have 6-8 people who want to play it several times.Probably not a good time to be buying games, since I was just talking about my lack of gaming partners for the next few weeks. I'm *this* close to driving an hour to the nearest Target to buy Sonar though. I want to wait for someone to post a review or something, since it's been available for a few days now. I've just got too much hype for it though; my Captain Sonar hype has bled over to this and compounded to form a ball of mega-hype. So I'll more than likely wind up driving there and buying it, only for it to get tossed into the garage for a while. I don't think it's the type of game my wife and daughter would want to try, and that would still only make three of us, so I'd have to run my sub by myself.
If that new Civ game doesn't take 4 hours to play, and especially if it works with 2 players without requiring tons of military focus and player attacking, I'm quite interested. Those were the factors that kept me from getting the old Civilization / Through the Ages games.
Could someone please post when preorders go up in the U.S. in case I miss it?
That's the one I'm wanting to get, Sonar (the four player version). I've put off getting Captain Sonar this long because of the player count. I mean, I buy all kinds of games I know I can't play, but that one, I KNOW I can't get to the table. It's one of the few times I've overrid my compulsive buying and actually listened to some of the advice in this thread. It must have been towards the end of last year when I finally looked into the game and decided I wanted it, and several posters (you might have been one of them even) cautioned me from getting it if I didn't have 7 other interested people.I'd very much recommend against Captain Sonar unless it's the new small-player-count version (is that out yet?) or unless you're very likely to have 6-8 people who want to play it several times.
It was sort of interesting the one or two times we got it played in an 8-person group, but even so it's janky and some roles kind of suck.
Yeah, I decided I can certainly wait.
In the meantime, anyone have a suggestion of a particularly good expansion that should be gotten for it?
