New Board Gaming |OT2| On Tables, Off Topic

BGG's Gen Con preview tool is super cool. I put together a list of what I'm interested in after a cursory run through: https://boardgamegeek.com/geekprevi...priority=1,2,3&sort=priority&viewstyle=thumbs

I'm probably not going to buy a ton, but I'd at least like to see some of them and maybe demo some stuff. I dunno how much I'll really be on the show floor this year though, since I've got a lot of events scheduled and also it's probably gonna be a madhouse.

Games I haven't played before that I'm already signed up to try are Thornwatch, Mag-O-Mag, and Dinosaur Island (I hope it's good, StoOgE! :D).

Also playing RPGs, doing an Escape Room, and probably just a lot of hanging out with friends. No True Dungeon this year, because we couldn't get a full run of people, and it's too easy for a run to be ruined by being teamed with dullards.

Anyone have any recent thoughts on Cthulhu Wars? Really wondering if I should back the kickstarter. I understand the game is overpriced and ridiculous, but if you throw that out the window, is the gameplay fun and is there a lot of replay value? It seems like it has a lot of great reviews and people seem to like it.

Some people on the Facebook groups I'm in have said it's a pretty good game. Of course, opinions are just that - opinions. What's the current pledge cost??

It's a decent game, nothing amazing really, but if cost means nothing to you then go ahead. I've tried it twice, didn't buy it... I didn't feel like its anything special that I needed to have, if it was cheaper maybe. But already own a copy of Chaos in the Old World and Blood Rage which is what CW is essentially same kind of game.

But again as just said last page, get a similar game like Blood Rage with similar concepts for like 1/4 the price

I love Blood Rage, own it, and I also have Kemet, Inis and some other area control games. What is pulling me towards this game is the asymmetry of the races and the Cthulhu theme, and also kind of the ridiculously huge figures. Opinions on the game seem to range from "it's average" to "it's awesome!" So it definitely seems like there's a game there, I'm just trying to figure out if it brings something new to the table.

Just received my copy of The 7th Continent! Looking to break into it likely this evening or the next.

I'm already in the midst of a Gloomhaven campaign with my game group which is going pretty well. I know there is a lot of hype for Gloomhaven - based on our own experiences, a lot of that hype is well deserved.

I backed the latest kickstarter and I'm currently waiting to receive my copy. Is it easy to learn?

Any suggestions for good two player cooperative board games? :)

Arkham Horror: The Card Game.
Xenyshyft: Dreadmire.
Aoen's End (wait for War Eternal).
Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective.

All of those are great. Other than that, I realize I have very few co-op board games to play with just 2 people.

Relatively, yeah. I recommend watching the setup and game play videos on the Cephalofair site as well as Rahdo setup/game play. I'm happy to answer any preliminary gameplay questions that you might have or that come up as you play.

I know this is more of a board game thread, but has anyone played Battletech: Alpha Strike rules?

I have a friend who's really into BT, got a bunch of minis for a good deal, printed out the stats and we played a match last night.

It was pretty cool! Pretty solid miniature-style combat, from what I know of it. We had a bunch of random terrain from another game to set up which made the map interesting to fight on.

The thing that bummed me out was that the dominant strategy seemed to be to back yourself up against the edge of the board/large piece of terrain, especially if you "lose" initiative and have to move your guy first - if you move close they can just move their guy behind you in response. Because you can't shoot backwards and you take extra damage from the back, simply closing off your back as an attack option was a really "good" move to make.

If the fight was in the middle of the board, then you end up with the mechs constantly moving behind each other as you alternate movement so both teams basically end up in a "conga" line, all shooting the backs of their opponents.

Like, both of these situations are valid as far as the game is concerned, but it just seemed super lame from what I know about Battletech. Constantly moving behind each other is not really how the fights play out in other forms of the fiction at all! Unfortunately I think this is just how the game is and I couldn't think of a great way to "fix" it (like maybe letting you rotate before shooting, but then you'd still kind of have the same problem and a smaller scale).

Love AS, it basically retains the Btech gameplay and removes all the little book keeping to streamline the game.

As for the situations you are dealing with, terrain is a major factor in helping deal with such things. And really if it looks like it could happen, then you have to essentially try and leap frog your units as to have one mech's fire zone covering the back of another one of your mech to prevent them from trying to hide in the back. It's also usually not in best interest to be in the close of range of each other, it's a long range dominant game so outside of fast scouts and lights, you will often be at range of each other.

Our small group has pulled people through more than one True Dungeon run. It's exhausting and less fun when that happens, though.

Yeah, last year was just a very annoying bust after we were the minority with a group that basically refused to try something different or listen to anyone during the puzzles resulting in our not particularly glorious deaths. It's fun, for sure, and I'd recommend people try it at least once, but the whole thing is such a huge investment for something that is pretty variable depending on who you're with.

Also, since we enjoy the puzzles more anyway, it just made more sense to just book an Escape Room for our whole group instead for about half the cost.

There is now apparently a second worker placement dinosaur game -- Dinogenics.

On one hand, the colors are far less retina-searingly garish than Dinosaur Island, which is a plus for me. I'd love to be able to buy an official version of Dinosaur Island but with different colors. On the other hand, Dinogenics looks very derivative of Dinosaur Island and/or Agricola so I'm not really interested from a gameplay perspective.

Actually, I think that's the $500 stack, but the $400 one wouldn't be too much smaller. Difference is all non-gameplay related (art books, pen&paper RPG, alternate sculpts, extra dice, some terrain minis, that sort of thing)

Kinda wish it was an LCG, but maybe in the future?

I wouldn't be surprised to see one if the board game sells well- that's a pretty reliable cash flow for FFG, and the Fallout brand would be a natural fit for it.

Then again, my friend who works for FFG said that Android Netrunner has slowed and the Star Wars LCG isn't selling quite as stupendously as expected, though the new Star Wars Destiny thing is doing very well.

So if not a LCG, I wouldn't be surprised to see FFG do something else with the brand.

That's one I really wish I had the funds for when it was kickstarted. I'm really disappointed I wasn't able to, and it makes me sad seeing stuff I'm going to be missing. :(

A friend put me onto the Kingkiller Chronicle books and I read the first two full length novels in a week. They are very, very good. Soooo, after a few vodka and sodas I just bought Tak. Which is a two player abstract board game developed from a game characters in the second book play. It looks quite good in a simple but maddeningly deep strategical play kind of way. Looking forward to giving it a go.

I like Cthulhu Wars the more I play. It can easily pass you by the first few sessions as it only takes an hour or so to finish, and things ramp up at a rapid pace. But once you realise it's a game where aggression is king and you stop getting all precious about that lovely new figure you spawned it's a blast and surprisingly deep once everyone knows what they are doing.

I'm thinking about making Pandemic Legacy my next purchase as I've heard nothing but good things about it.

I have never played any versions of Pandemic before and neither have the group I will play with.
Will this be any kind of barrier to our enjoyment? Specifically, the first few rounds, will our lack of familiarity with the workings of Pandemic hamper our ability to do well, or are we still going to get all the goodness by going in blind?

You might appreciate the Legacy changes more if you know what normal Pandemic plays like, but other than that, you should be fine. Pandemic Legacy does a pretty good job of helping you out if you're having a hard time. (The difficulty is adjusted each time you win or lose a game, so if you lose the first two games, the third one will be a lot easier)

Yeah go big then, it will really help with your set up time too, which for Arkham is not insignificant. And i hope you enjoy Arkham, it gets a lot of stick but I'd play it over Eldritch and Mansion of Madness any day (providing I had time lol). It's bloated, fiddly and can be infuriating but it's always an event when you play and it's one of my all time faves.

I played a fair amount of Pandemic before Legacy came out, and the thing I enjoyed the most about Legacy is stuff that I understood about Pandemic, but was being stretched out or turned sideways in Legacy. If I didn't have that context for the new challenges, I feel like the game would be kind of weird.

Legacy does present a (mostly?) regular game of Pandemic as the first thing in the campaign. I guess you could play that again and again until you were ready for campaign, but I seem to recall there being less roles and events available in that starting mission.

My only fear is that it might be tough for shorter players to reach the middle of the gaming area if the table is so large. Argh. I wish it was adjustable in size. :)

Thanks guys. I might just grab Pandemic just to get us a bit more familiar with the mechanics. Is vanilla the way to go, or are any of the other versions superior (I've heard the Cthulhu one is to be avoided)?

True, but if you are going to be playing more of these big box games with expansions tacked on then space is everything. Arkham always has you moving pieces and drawing cards for other people simply because lots of stuff is going to be at opposite ends of the playing area due to the huge footprint. Welcome to a new way of playing games lol.

Can't you just play Legacy like regular Pandemic with the vanilla rules DLed from the site and use the components from Legacy?

Yeah you can. You don't even need to DL anything. The Legacy rulebook has a thing that says to just play it normal a few games without Legacy rules if you haven't played before:

Hi guys!

So a couple of questions. My friends and I have fallen in love with playing cool board games over the last year or so. Here is what we have:

Blood Rage - probably my favorite board game of all time. Pure emphasis on strategy with basically no luck involvement, tons of different options for going about playing and different strategies to employ. Love Love Love this game.

Small World - this was the first board game we got and it is fun and entertaining, but Blood Rage now just kind of overshadows it.

Dead of Winter/Arkham Horror - kind of similar games in concept. Co op is fun and the games themselves are enjoyable if overlong.

Bloodborne card game - awesome. simple, fast, enjoyable, great property behind it (could really, really use an expansion but that's beside the point)

Betrayal at the House on the Hill - cool game, interesting with the different storylines and twists, but probably the least overall "fun"

So with that out of the way, here are my questions:

1. First off, the new Dark Souls board game looks amazing, anyone here play it? Is it worth $100+?

2. Any suggestions on other fun games considering my list above? I really like strategy, co-op and competitive are both great, we also do like D&D and there seem to be a lot of games out there that are like mini campaign type RPG boardgames, but I don't know if any of them are good, but having individual characters and being able to level up or upgrade throughout a game are certainly pluses.

Anyway, thanks in advance!

If you like Star Wars then Imperial Assault sounds like it could be right up your alley. It's a dungeon crawler essentially with levelling up, buying upgrades etc and a good length campaign. It also has a competitive mode called skirmish which is also good. If the Star Wars theme isn't your thing then the game IA is based on, Descent, could also be a good option. Then there's Gloomhaven, but you need the patience to wait for a copy (it's as rare as rocking horse poop) and a big wallet.

Hello, friend!

If you like Blood Rage, I have to recommend Inis. Some people may find it a redundant addition, but I am not so sure. It has card drafting mechanics and whatnot but it is still different. I would take a look into it and see if you feel it would be different enough. I have probably played 40+ games of Inis at this point and I am still happy to play again. Kemet is another one to take a look at!

Scythe is still a kind of hyped 4X style strategy game and it isn't painful to teach. It should 'click' after a few turns and then it is a breeze. As for the kind of hybrid of board game and RPG, I haven't played Gloomhaven yet but it gets a lot of glowing reviews. Imperial Assault and Descent are good too, if you are alright with the inherent RNG dice bring.

Mage Knight is one of my favorite games but it is kind of hard to recommend when playing with a number of people. It is really time consuming in a strategical way. But if you are looking for a game to play solo or with one or two others I would definitely look into it. It is kind of like an RPG/deck building/exploration hybrid. You build a deck over the game and the cards you draw determine what you can do each turn. There is a day and night cycle too and it is quite complicated but once you know the basics it is a really great game. You can be an awful fucker too, torching temples for artifacts or be a nice dude liberating shrines. It is a really good game.

If you are after something co-op like Arkham Horror. My group has really been enjoying Robinson Crusoe over the last few weeks. It relies on the luck of the dice and is thematically heavy too, but I feel there is a lot more strategy and careful planning involved than in something like Arkham or Eldritch Horror. You *could* draw a comparison to Dead of Winter minus the betrayer mechanic, but it is scenario based which adds extra depth.

If you like "Pure emphasis on strategy with basically no luck involvement", Dark Souls is definitely not the game for you.

I'm sure you'll get a ton of suggestions, as there are many great games out there. I will just offer some good advice - great games get reprints. If you are still seeing 10-20 year old games getting reprinted, the game is holding up to the test of time, and it's likely that it's a great game.

Thanks for these suggestions guys! Getting some great ideas!

Specifically to Karkador, I only really care about the strategy vs luck in pure competitive games like Blood Rage. I don't mind it in something more co-op minded. Have you played Dark Souls? I'd love to hear about it if so.

And anyone else, please feel free to keep making suggestions, this is all really helpful!

Off that list I'd recommend, looking at my own shelf and experiences:

- Kemet (might be a bit heavy, but you played Arkham Horror- you'll be fine, Just to cause an argument I think this is superior to Blood Rage. :p)
- Adrenaline
- Champions of Midgard
- Clank!
- Cosmic Encounter
- Ethnos
- El Grande
- Outlive
- Tyrants of the Underdark (played this on Monday, it's moved in to my top 10. Great merge of area control and deck building).
- Unfair
- Vikings gone wild

They aren't all area control games, some are deck builders and even worker placement but it might give you an idea of what other game mechanics appeal to you. I've kept them thematic as possible but not at the expense of gameplay. You might want to try Imperial Assault or even DOOM for a 1 vs all itch.

Edit: Add Manhattan Project: Energy Empire to that list too, completely left field but one of the first engine builders I played and still one of my faves too. Quality game.

There Wizkids D&D games are actually pretty decent if you're into it. The last one was about Giants and I think there's another one coming out soon.

sooo peeps..
my haul in august so far:
Mansion of madness 2nd edition + all xpac
Android netrunner core
last mythos pack for dunwhich legacy cycle of arkham horror lcg
kickstarted founders of gloomhaven
kickstarted argent
bought friday
bought again trollfen xpac for descent (had to return both trollfen and tomb of the wyrm from my previous purchase as they are in english, while all the rest of stuff i own for descent 2nd ed is in italian), sniping around for tomb of the wyrm

next games for august//september, advice me!
1) gloomhaven (i played it, and loved it, but i didn't get in the ks) ?
2) lords of waterdeep + xpac ?
3) scythe ?
4) cry havoc ?
5) ???
6) lotr lcg (though i think i'd first buy the stuff for android netrunner before embarking on lotr lcg.. especially because i will buy 5 rings lcg in september)
7) dead of winter crossroad or the long night
8) pandemic legacy season1 (i played it quite a bit, but i don't own it)
9) time
10) more xpac for android netrunner

the only one that i will get for sure regardless are path to carcosa xpac for arkham horror and five rings lcg core set. rest, i cannot decide on what to buy..
i favour game that can be played both as solo and as a group.. mandatory solo, potentially as group.. but if the game is really good even a group only game is fine :)
choices, choices :|

I haven't played it, but several of the reviews I've seen point out how it's luck-based in a bad way, and takes a very long, frustrating time to play.

When I read your list, I immediately look to my shelf and can recommend a slew of miniature based games.

Space Hulk board game
Deathwatch Kill Team
Warhammer Quest
Zombicide - modern or Black Plague based on preference
Shadows of Brimstone
Descent

I think you are ready to make the short leap from board games to skirmish tabletop games like Shadow War: Armageddon, which is my latest obsession and super fast and fun.
