Ok so I got a new cell today (Motorola V180 from Cingular) and it plays MP3 ringtones. I have already downloaded a few just for fun, but I want to know if it is possible to create my own?

I have found a few software apps that say they do it...but the "trials" don't let me see how it works.

Does anyone know a good way to make my own MP3 ringtones from my own files?

i used audacity. Shareware I think, but I haven't used it for more than the 1 day it took to trim down some mp3s for ringtones.

The trick is to think how they'll work. Eg for a text message tone, it needs to be short and sharp. So a snippet of the chorus might do (I have a little whistling section from 'the littlest hobo')

For a ringtone, think if you'll ever leave the phone away from you, or how long it might take to answer it. I like to have a quieter moment after 5 seconds or so, so I hear it ring, but if it takes me a while to get to my desk, its not annoying everyone with loud music the whole time.
