New Dark Sector Trailer

The trailer is cool, but I'm beginning to feel bored of these 'next gen games' looking like updated current gen games.
It's definetly time to see something really next gen.

I adore the art direction... wow. The main character looks awesome, and I love that face mask on the guard.

Hopefully this will make it to all next-gen consoles... I'd love to see what Live play or gyroscope control could bring to the table.

Hasn't it already been confirmed for both the PS3 and 360?

No, DE hasn’t announced which system this is for. They have only reviled the engine which is called “Dark Sector”

For next-gen, that is unimpressive (again). I thought it was impressive when the first shots came out, but that was at least a year ago. Now it looks like a better use of the Doom 3 enging (i know it isn't).

Splinter Cell in space = bomba.

I played D3 on a high-end PC and it looked better than this. I don't know, this has too few shadows... (imagine that!) maybe there are more polys than in D3 or maybe even textures are better but I didn't catch this kind of "OMGWTF!" lighting system as in D3.

Or maybe after D3 everything else just looks the same, meaning normal?

Someone said earlier on EA.com that if you have seen one per-pixel lit, bumpmapped, shadowed, bloomed and blurred FPS then you have seen them all.

Damn, what's wrong with you guys? I think it's pretty awesome. If that's in-game (not RT cutscense), that is.

whoa - i didnt know that your playing as cyber-ninja from metal gear solid in dark-sector. seriously, western developers shouldnt steal artwork property from japanese developsers.

I was expecting to be going "meh, it looks okay" (like from 12-14 months ago or whatever)
but damn, that looked pretty nice.

maybe've they've upgraded from developing on 9800 Pros to X800 XTs... or dare I say, R5xx -based graphics ??

I hope the game is fun and plays as nice as it looks.

The music's great and I like the way it looks, but it's not amazing looking and I'll probably never play it.

from a CNN article from 13 months ago, commenting on the first trailer
Canadian developer Digital Extremes has released a teaser-trailer for their upcoming game "Dark Sector." The footage shown in that teaser is real-time gameplay based on Digital Extreme's projected specs for the Xbox 2 and PS3. Company spokesperson Meridith Braun won't say which emulated console the teaser is running on, only that it represents "a next generation platform."

The trailer is actually a technology demo, showing what the engine is capable of, rather than gameplay footage. Its purpose is to attract publisher interest. But if it is, in fact, representative of what we can expect from the next generation, tomorrow's games will boast a graphical quality that's on par with the pre-rendered (non-interactive) cut-scenes in today's titles.

Digital Extremes first announced "Dark Sector" four years ago as a massively multiplayer online action game that would use Epic Games' "Unreal Tournament" engine. The developer later changed its mind, though, changing the focus of the game, removing the MMO elements and, beginning in January 2003, creating its own game engine (dubbed "The Sector Engine").

Looks nice, but the trailer also made it kind of obvious that in general, animation could become a (bigger) bottleneck for next generation. With more realistic visuals and surfaces, animation needs to follow close behind in order to avoid making characters look like stiff dolls instead of life-like humans.

The music's great and I like the way it looks, but it's not amazing looking and I'll probably never play it.

Well, the graphics look OKAY, but the music is very next gen.

<rolleyes>

That looks very interesting. The style and design is great, the music is fitting, and the graphics do more than just get the job done.

And honestly? It looks fresh. Stealth has been done 1000 times before, but this looks different. Maybe it's just the great art direction and the way the trailer was cut.

can someone say what sequel this game is to? My broadband is currently capped so I don't want to DL crap. Worth a look?

Splinter Cell: Fisher Fights Doom 3's Demons

This looks pretty cool. That animation could use some work though. :/ The guy looked like some kind of primate when he was walking down the hall.

not a sequel to anything, but will remind you of Splinter Cell, Doom 3 and MGS2

you have DSL? good, cause it IS worth downloading. very much so.

overall graphics are good - lighting is great - animation needs major work - art is exellent - music is very good.

I have some captures from the 1280x720 version of the video here if your want. I also recommend everyone to check this version, it looks very nice. 720p resolution :)

I got the duality vibe too.

Gotta say, after pariah im not expecting too much from this game.

If this can be done on Xbox or any current gen system, I'm playing the wrong games.

While this is just hitting nextgen stuff, it is pretty. The art direction is awesome.

if this was coming from a JPN developer you would all be creaming in your pants.

there is in-game action in the trailer, looks pretty good

wait i mean "god this is fucking horrible look at the shitty textures this is nowhere near next-gen where the fuck is the grass"

Damn, that looks very nice. Like a higher poly Riddick (that's a complement).

I'm really digging the style too. DE are great, and I'm happy to see them finally making some new IP's of their own.

I agree with you, but should "next-gen" be just a "higher poly Riddick?" I know it's a first gen game, but with some of GAF's expectations, these graphics are shit.

I know what you mean, but come on, can this be seen as having 'bad' graphics by any stretch of the imagination? Since the release is probably 2006, there's time for the graphics to improve...great style and art OTOH is much harder to pull off, this game manages that. Going into next-gen, I'm not going to care if evey game blows me away but I want truly unique and inspiring presentations from my games, that IMO is more important than having bleeding edge graphics. But if you can do both, more power to ya (MGS4 :)).

great trailer, great music, great environments, great looking level design...the ONLY complaint I can say about that trailer is the animation looks a bit unrealistic in some parts...otherwise a very good showing from DE :D

love the visual style and the music and the editing. but the engine looks on par with current pc games. which doesn't put it too far ahead of the xbox. imo. not what i'd expect of a new console generation. though i suppose this is running on a current pc rather than final xbox 360 hardware, and that future games will improve considerably.

yeah exactly, all of these complainers must be brand new to gaming apparently since they can't seem to realize that the graphic standard doesn't peak with the 1st gen titles. look at the 1st gen stuff compared to say MGS3 or RE4. the stuff we have seen so far is only the beginning

Oh, bullshit. This looks like a perfect mix of Capcom and Konami.
People like Japanese stuff for its art direction and this has great art direction.

You're missing the point.

I agree about the art direction and I happen to like it myself but you know god damn well that if this was coming from some Japanese developer this would be getting 100 times the attention it's already recieved. They don't have to change anything. Just slap the Konami name on the box and people would be eating this shit up around here.

No there are some problems in that video. First the main character looks like Grey Fox rip off (Ninja from MGS); I also see a lot of shimmering, lack of v-sync and jaggies in the video.

Doom 3 running on my 9800 pro looked better than that. It's a cool concept and all but this is by the devs who made Pariah so I am not too excited ;)

love it!

Kojima ripoff but impressiv non the less

art direction is super, love the music, love the graphics, next gen will rule.
PS3 where are you?

I know there are problems with some of the technical aspects of this game. Hell, the animation definately needs work and I was the first one here to say so. But as far as the design of the characters or enviornments are concerned, I think they're great and I believe would appeal to a lot more people around here if a Japanese company's name was on the box instead of DE's. Of course Pariah doesn't help DE, but my point remains. :p

Looks very nice, but doesn't impress as much as I would like...

I hope that next-gen offers a whole lot more than that. I mean, it DOES look very good...but it doesn't seem to be very far beyond current generation PC games. It looks a bit better than Doom 3 in a number of ways, but it is still very comparable. I want to see games that completely blow away anything we've seen thus far.

With the resources required to create this stuff, though, perhaps I'm asking too much. :\

Sadly I haven't seen one next-gen game that looks much better that current PC stuff. I say to myself that we still haven't seen much (maybe 5% of currently developed next-gen stuff) but even the mighty Unreal Tournament 2007 and TES: Oblivion look like something that could run on this year's PCs. Everything they do (grass, bumpmapping, physics etc.) has already been done, maybe not on such scale.
