New Dragon's Crown trailer

The right stick thing is annoying for me because I intend to play this game with my fight stick. However, I have a dedicated group of three friends who are going to play with me so they can just open all the extra doors/chests for me.

You should probably link the source of that article though.

You also need both the d-pad and left-stick. One controls your character, the other goes through your items. You can switch which is which in the options, but that's all you can do. I wanted to play it with an arcade stick, too, but it's no big deal.

In the PS Vita version, it's easy to lose track of your position if you're surrounded by enemies

From all the gameplay I've seen so far, this looked like it would be an issue for a smaller display. Hope it doesn't damn the Vita version.

FFFFUUUU forgot about item selection. Oh well, there goes that plan.

I had problem with this even on the large display at evo. There is just always a lot of stuff going on and the screen gets cluttered. It's my biggest gripe right now. I'm hoping more playtime and familiarity will alleviate the issue.

It sounds like the same issue as what could happen in Guardian Heroes at times, so probably not that big a deal.

Do we have any idea yet of whether this is 1080p or not? This Famitsu article about the game being demoed on a 4K TV has a line about it being Vanillaware's first 1080p game. A quick image search reveals 1080p screenshots where the art looks too good to have been upscaled, but the text and other HUD items look too blurry to have been rendered at that resolution.

Pre-loading. One more week :(

Hrrmm, wonder how long it takes to open up the MP side. Thought it would be available from the start or at least after the tutorial segment (who knows maybe the tutorial is just really long).

Here's my shaky cam vid from EVO. Sorry about the music. The showroom was really loud and I'm not sure how to add my own music to vids.

If anybody has any questions I'd be glad to try and answer them. I played through once with the elf, but I watched it a lot throughout the weekend.
You'll have to share a different link after it uploads.

The Atlus guys that did the E3 stage demo said there were "9 main stages". The most recent Japanese trailer also says there's a "chaotic maze" type dungeon. Most people I've seen speculate that it'll be a randomly generated dungeon/stage that gets harder the deeper you go in, with loot increasing in value the deeper you go as well.

At first I was shocked about the "9 main stages" thing, but it must be a missquote or misunderstanding because, at the very least, there's more than 9 boss fights:
Harpy
Wyverns
Pirate Brawl (boss of the pirate cove)
Female Vampires/Succubi
Golem
Giant Beetle
Minotaur (perhaps not a boss?)
Beholder
Chimera
Medusa
Kraken
Blue Winged Demon
Red Dragon
Red Giant Demon
... plus several others I'm surely missing. Of course, they might reuse stages with different bosses depending on the quest...

Is this the first Vanillaware game you have ever paid attention to? :)

Of course I would be glad if there were more stages, but they seem to be pretty sure of themselves. Here's the video and exact moment where two separate reps said 9 stages: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=U2i0jrlIOP0#t=255s

They say here (at 12:35) that it's 10-15 hours per character, so that's 1.1-1.7 hours per stage.

By comparison, Odin Sphere was ~36 hours start to finish and had 5 characters, so about 7 hours per character. 7 hours across 5 stages would mean an average of 1.4 hours per stage.

So, it's fairly comparable to Odin Sphere for how long you'll spend in each stage.

I wonder if the game is balanced enough for a solo run. I remember certain parts of Borderlands 2 were brutal solo
You mean the "staying awake" part? :D

One of the more recent official videos implies that a single character run is possible, though I imagine it won't be easy.

- Dragon's Crown (9/8/9/9, 35 points): Vanillaware's latest action game - which has gotten as much press coverage for its skin-tastic fantasy pinup art as for its gameplay - is finally out on PS3 and Vita in Japan. "The unique graphics and world setting are really charming," Ebihara wrote. "From the random equipment drops that give you assorted effects to the freedom you get in learning new skills, there's a ton of gameplay depth to explore if you're into it. Controlling the finger cursor is a bit annoying in the PS3 version, but it's a lot easier to keep track of where you are, even if there are tons of foes around."

Multiple reviewers complained about having to use the PS3's right stick to control the cursor, suggesting that the Vita may have been the lead platform for Dragon's Crown. Honma didn't let that bother her too much, however: "The high-fantasy story almost has a nostalgic feel to it, but the action you get to experience is really cool and the controls are top-notch. The narration also provides you with this experience like you're playing a table RPG or a gamebook, which is strangely novel. Multiplay is chaotic and you tend to lose your character a lot, but as a party game it's a great package."

The Vita version received the same score, even though it had some of its own issues. "In the PS Vita version, it's easy to lose track of your position if you're surrounded by enemies, but the touch controls are really comfortable," Ebihara said. "It does take some time before multiplayer is made available, but once you're in, you'll definitely want to gather up stronger equipment and keep playing."

Vita version the superior version confirmed!

Considering I own and have finished Odin Sphere, nope. :D If they mean "enviroments", like Odin Sphere's, then I guess that's OK, since each enviroment, unlike Odin Sphere, seems to have quite a bit of variation in backdrops. If it's 9 static, unchanging stages, then that seems a bit crazy, and as I mentioned that's more bosses than stages.

But it could actually be the case that there is indeed not a lot of variation. For one, they're showing the same bosses over and over, so I'm guessing there won't be many, if any at all, unrevealed bosses. Strangely Odin Sphere was quite top-heavy with that, what with having five entirely new bosses right at the end...
