New GTA:PSP Tidbits

From the feature in the newest/upcomming OPM (August)

* The PSP engine has been worked on for two and a half years already, so it only took Rockstar three weeks to get LCS running on the PSP. With the technical hurdle out of the way, Rockstar quickly got to work on making LCS grow.

* Aside from quicker missions and shorter cut-scenes, essentially everything else will remain the same due to not having many restrictions on the PSP. Rockstar wants LCS to feel like you are playing in just another side of the GTA universe, instead of "I'm playing the crappy portable GTA."

* Rockstar is putting forth as much effort for the portable GTA as they did with GTA3, Vice City, and San Andreas. The high production value with attention to detail, soundtracks, voice recordings, etc. will not change on the PSP.

* The world is roughly halfway between GTA3 and Vice City; it's longer than GTA3 and shorter than Vice City.

* They've found a way to get as much out of the battery for this streaming-intensive game as they can, and so far, they're quite impressed and content with what they've been able to do
Edited for Clarity

Sounding excellent in all regards, so far. I just can't wait to be able to cruise around in Liberty City again on the go.

Longer than GTA3, too? Awesome.

"They've found a way..."

Wow, could this statement be any less informative? :/

Man you really shouldn't go around making such bold and daring statements.
Even if I was a fan of the GTA series, I definately wouldn't buy a 250 dollar handheld to pay another 60 dollars on top of that to play a GTA game. :/ Unless I was wealthy, naturally.

"Rockstar have worked for two and a half years on the PSP engine for their games, and claim it only took them three weeks to port the game map to PSP!"

errr.... what?

They said they've worked around the battery life issue through intelligent data placement on the UMD. According to Rockstar, it's not the loading that kills battery life; it's the seek time. So they've really taken a hard look at how they've arranged data on the disc in an effort to reduce those dreaded seek times.

T'was a good article. An interesting read on many levels.

Both those games are slated for Christmas 2005 (I know for a fact DMC PSP is).

So those games HAVE to be at TGS 2005. That's the only major trade show before those games released.

Hopefully Crisis Core will be at this big Square-Enix event @ the end of July.
I just find it hard to believe these games are scheduled for release in 6 months and we haven't seen ANYTHING on them....

Isn't Advent Children meant to have trailers of all the FFVII compilation stuff on it (could be I was reading too much into that)? And that's supposed to come out September I think.

I am not a GTA fan, I dunno why, it looks really impressive, has always highscores, millions of fans...IÂ’ve played GTA3 but never touched my feelings, itÂ’s the same for Vice City & San Andereas... is there anyway to fall in love with this game ?

I think GTA will make a huge step for the PSP in U.S..

There's no special magic trick to making people like a game. Despite what some people on here say, it's very rare that playing for so long or getting to this certain point aren't going to magically make everything click. You tried it for yourself, you didn't like, you've done as much as you can be expected to try to like the game, don't worry about it, carry on focusing on the games you do like.

Cheers to Rockstar for not dumming this one down, a-la Spiderman PSP. If they can get a 3.5 hour long playtime with this one, I'll be very impressed.

Happy DS owner, but this looks like the game that will break me down and buy a PSP.

I'm still worried about control. The GTA games use every single part of the Dual Shock pad, yet the PSP has 4 less buttons and only 1 stick. I hopeful they can do it well, but I'm still worried.

I'm doubly worried seeing as how they didn't do so hot with the San Andreas version for Xbox in regards to control.

THe only compromise I can think of is that selecting targets will have to be done with the D-pad or L now instead of both the shoulder buttons, but other than that it should play like the rest of them

Yep, R1 is to target and then you go through enemies with the DPad which isn't a big deal. They already seem to have a proper GTA running on the PSP and people just a few weeks ago didn't even think that was possible ("its going to be top down, no way they can get a real PS2 style GTA on the PSP"). So i'm not worried about the controls. Its clear they know what they're doing.

Another exclusive (how many did they allow?) from some unknown German mag had this to say...

The Playstations...
Following on from the recent news from Spanish magazine Play2Mania, another European magazine, Germany's PlayThePlaystation has had the chance to preview Liberty City Stories.

The article in their latest issue doesn't feature any new screenshots but does give hints towards how the game has been translated to PSP's differing button layout.

* To target an enemy, players must now press the "R" button and can cycle through targets using the left and right buttons on the D-Pad
* The on screen display (both radar and health meters etc) will be semi-transparent, giving a better view of the action on PSP's small screen.
* MP3 playback from the memory stick will be supported!
* The clothing changes are said to be more akin to San Andreas than Vice City
* The magazine claims that the game is "80% finished"

so Rockstar has been working on GTA PSP since ~January 2003.

:lol

No, they have been working on a 'general purpose' 3D angine for PSP tha GTA PSP happens to use.

GTALCS will be -the- reason to own a PSP, mark my words

No it won't. :\

I'm sure it'll be good, but the thing is that it's not completely original, which will probably turn off a few people.

It will be a big game, yeah, but not even close to what it did on PS2. PSP needs to be its own monster, not just a portable PS2.

On that note, I'll be getting this. I think the GTA gameplay is overrated but it sounds like the perfect kind of game to go portable.

Uh, that actually just worries me more. Heh.

There won't be.

But there will almost positively be a firmware update for whatever we're up to by then. :P Sony will be at like 1.58 or something.

I think that'd be a positive thing more than a negative. People were really excited when they found out you got to visit Liberty City in SA, and then were pissed when they found out you don't really get to explore it at all. That city is extremely popular with GTA fans.
