New Harmonix title - Guitar Hero (PS2)

Awesome! Great to see another game from Harmonix. I'm glad to see they're still allowed to make more games, even though sales are kind of low (they deserve better IMO). :)

Harmonix rocks. Console gameopgraphy!

-Frequency (PS2) 2001 SCEA
-Amplitude (PS2) 2003 SCEA
-Amplitude: P.O.D. Special Edition (PS2) SCEA/Atlantic Records
-Karaoke Revolution (PS2) 2003 Konami
-Karaoke Revolution Volume 2 (PS2) 2004 Konami
-EyeToy: AntiGrav (PS2) 2004 SCEA
-Karaoke Revolution Volume 3 (PS2) 2004 Konami
-Karaoke Revolution (Xbox) 2004 Konami
-Guitar Hero (PS2) 2005 Red Octane

HELL YES.

A rock-centric music game from the makers of probably my two favorite games this gen? Absolutely awesome.

What's that?

So is it confirmed that Red Octane are publishing the game? I didn't know they were a game publisher, thought they dealt with 3rd party peripherals only.

its a guitar freaks clone and the game will be shipping with some sort of deluxe guitar freaks controller :)

They're moving into game publishing... they also have In the Groove coming to PS2.

Ah, then it makes sense. :)
Seems like they got dropped by SCEA, in that case.

is a "guitar freaks" clone in the 3-key + pick interface sense of the word? or just in the "play a guitar "sense of the word.

if it actually uses the guitar freak-style interface I am going to go there during E3 and blow their minds

I think they're just doing a game for someone else, like they did with Karaoke Revolution.

Yeah, you're probably right. I'm just glad they're making another game. :)

I'll have a guitar ready ;-)

Ha, I thought the Guitar Freaks controller was an actual guitar with 6 strings. I guess it's not as complicated? Perhaps this will be easier for me then.

If this is like Guitar Freaks, the game is mine. Harmoix, please, PUT SOME FUCKING METAL ON THIS. That was my main gripe with GF. There weren't very many rock songs either. It would be even better if they came out with a Drum Mania clone. :)

i do believe it is the 3 key + pick interface from what i heard

Yeah the guitar freaks controller just has three buttons that you can hold down in different combinations on the neck, and it has this toggle thingy on the body that you can slap up or down for upward or downward strums.

For what it's worth, if you go to the web site for the "get your song in the game" competition, it says:

"The winning band will have their song playable in the game alongside songs made famous by such artists as:

Jimi Hendrix, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sum 41, White Zombie, and more!"

I've got no idea who Sum 41 is, but the other ones sound pretty decent.

Something I just noticed, though, is that it says "songs made famous by" instead of "songs from" or something similar. I wonder if this is going to be like Donkey Konga, where the songs are just covers, instead of the actual songs.

How does that work, exactly? I haven't seen an arcade anywhere in years, so I've never seen a Guitar Freaks machine.

Harmonix is quickly picking up the pace for Konami's slacking on the Bemani franchise. Sure, this may not actually be GF, but it might as well be, and it'll be nice to see some home action that ISN'T GF 1-3. :P But they need to come out with a drum game, too, so I can have my Session mode dammit!

1-4 you mean, not that it's much of a difference. Still, I'd much rather see Konami get with the picture and release the 8 or so ignored GF/DM sequels here than see Harmonix try to rip it off. Here's hoping that it's good, and that it'll work with the old GF guitars, at the very least!

Speaking of Harmonix, I've had this link for a couple of days but wasn't sure if I should start a thread about it. I guess I'll just use this one. Check it out if you're even slightly interested in Harmonix - it's a really thorough article all about them, complete with a picture of the team assembled around their Stun Runner machine, which was obviously a huge source of inspiration when they were making the Frequency games.

Edit: Oops, I see someone else already made a thread about this. Oh well, I'll leave it here anyway, just in case anyone missed its dedicated thread.

Fucking finally. I'm glad to see they aren't making stupid camera and singing shit anymore. The only thing better could have been if instead of this game they were making "Wavelegnth"

Stick a sock in it monkeyboy.

Antigrav fucking rocks. I hope Sony releases a better quality Eyetoy on the PS3 ad Harmonix makes more games like Antigrav to justify it's existence.

I'll check this game out too.

Gimme a fuckin' Gitaroo Man sequel that will work with the controller!

OMG

oh please oh please!

and HENDRIX!?

that better be the very hard uber hidden song lol

You know, when we heard about this on Wednesday it was an OMG INDUSTRY SECRET. Then they announce it two days later? And here I was all ready to leak it to Spong...

Will this game teach you to play guitar? I've always wanted to learn guitar, and would be very interested in a PS2 instructional/entertainment game.

This game will teach you to play guitar about as well as GTA teaches you to be a cold-blooded criminal or Halo teaches you to be a space marine.

It is kind of a shame that Konami has such little interest in bringing Guitar Freaks (and the other bemani games) over to US consoles. But I would be really pleased even if Harmonix's game is largely a reimplementation of that basic design. I am hopeful that the qualities that made the GF series so great do not get lost in the process in any case...

Hey Jack Frost... consider this an official Guitar Hero challenge if I run into you at E3 ^_^

1st thought:

guitar hero game -> YEAH!

2nd thought:

looking at the confirmed list with shit like sum41 and white zombie -> BLEH!

no heavy metal and hard rock -> no SALE!

I'd love to find out more about this game, but both of those links just take you to pages that have a white URL on a black background. Was there something up there earlier that got taken down?

Yeah it got taken down.

So it's not a true guitar simulator I take it? It'd be cool if they made some adapter for guitar cables that sent your notes to the game.

Well, there wasn't a whole lot of information on the pages to begin with. One of them was what looked like a placeholder page for the game itself, and the other was the page for the contest for a band to get their song in the game.

The only useful info is what I posted above, regarding some of the artists in the game.

Given that it's by Harmonix, I doubt that it's going to be that involved. Both Frequency and Amplitude were pretty basic as far as controls go. I imagine that they're going to at least keep things pretty simple in order to try and get some good sales numbers, as neither Freq nor Amp sold all that well, which really is a shame.
