Game Science's New Title | Black Myth: Zhong Kui - Teaser Trailer

what a snowflake
He litterally was number 1 in the country for the national exams. By law he was guaranteed a job in government, the only way for peasants to rise up into high society. But then he was rejected from what was rightfully his because he was 'too ugly'.
Imagine that, the best candidate rejected for superficial traits. What di you expect him to do? He did everything right, but his society failed him.

The Heavens hired his spirit as supernatural Police, grabbing rogue ghosts and ghouls that are harming people.

I think it could be more exciting if they do an alternate ZKU with the backstory of instead of suiciding, he gathered a band uglies to revolt and fight against the imperial corrupted government/s

lmao, it's not that simple, it will get banned for sure by china gov, alot of chinese web novel nowaday being axed or force to change direction because they are bad mouth anykind of goverment or dig much into regilion stuff that make it wide spread, even buddisht and taoist get hit hard

just image you are playing a well-know mythology character that holding a grude against goverment, it won't sit well with alot of big head in china, even BM wukong did hold some grude against goverment like celestial govement but they never mention it ingame, nor in any lore piece

oh he is a very famous character among east asian peeps which most of sale from wukong came from, they did choice well, even the rumor 3rd black game character also very famous

My dude, Zhong Kui is massively recognizable, just maybe not in your cultural bubble.

In China, he's one of the most famous mythological figures: the Demon Queller, the ghost slayer, a staple of folklore, operas, paintings, festivals, Lunar New Year decorations. He's been around for over a thousand years and has shown up in countless forms of media, movies, TV dramas, novels etc etc. If you walk through a Chinese household or temple, chances are you'll see an image of Zhong Kui guarding the place.

It's not that Zhong Kui isn't recognizable, it's that you aren't familiar with him. Which is fine, but that doesn't make him a bad choice. It actually makes him a perfect choice: players outside Asia get to experience a mythological powerhouse they might not have been exposed to yet. Same way God of War introduced a lot of people to Norse myths beyond just Odin and Thor.
Guys, my country is right next to China and I don't know who tf is he. I may be speaking from my own experience, but most of my friends don't recognize him either.
He could be an important character in Chinese mythology but there is tons of characters who are more popular than him like Nezha or Yang Jian,.... Even Pigsy is more popular than that guy. When I first saw him in the trailer I even thought he is Sandy.

There are quite a few actually, it's fine if it's not exaggerated or target specific parts and not the structure itself (fight certain corrupted politician is ok, fight jade emperor probably not). Demon Hunter donghua went on air last year and it quite filled with political corruption, social inequality in regards to power etc. And donghua restriction are higher than of novels.

But in general China is structural bureucratic society that goes back for thousands of years. It survived many crisises and it has ways to protect itself.
Those who oppose it are not heroes, they are villains. Even though some were prominent and did some good for the country like Cao Cao and Empress Wu, they still portrayed as evil villains as they go against "proper ways" of established society. Even Wukong in original myth was villain on probation (and was portrayed as such) who was forced by basically a slave contract to serve a good guy Tang Sanzang

The very introduction is about it.

nezha will never happen, don't hold your wet dream, nezha is more like kratos in chinese mythology, unless a western studio does it, no way any chinese studio get a greenlight to do a dark fantasy about him

I vote for white snake)
Would be nice to have a game about pretty girl too

I can't help but hate these trailers, the game won't be out for at least several years and I'll be surprised if they have developed anything beyond this trailer and some planning documents and concept art.

It's not made by a Sony studio so you'll hate it

Zhong Kui is a taoist master specialized in exorcism, who was able to control 1000 ghosts.
My bet is a pokemon type game where you make ghost you captured fight in your place.
Potentially good, but im still pissed of they did not talk about Wukong's dlc and showed this instead

kinda doubt about pokemon stuff, soullike combat kinda a stable for this series, his ghost command thingy probly will be in his skill tree like wukong and he can summon ghost to fight for him for short while just like wukong's pluck of many, but a water down version, tbf pluck of many already damn OP in first game they will nerfed it down and give you a shit version of it like rather than summon many at once you summon only 1 ghost

Black myth refers to the story and not the gameplay tho...
Black myth is a way to retell Chinese classics with an "edgy" flavor to it (wukong being in love with lady white bones being a good exemple of that type of writing).
It comes from Chinese fanfiction and you can find black myth for approximately every story told.
Or so my Chinese friend says.

The version of the story I read, the ruler who revoked his candidacy was upset that his action on a whim ruined a promising talent with hindsight, so posthumously promoted him. And that was part of why he evidentially got a job in the afterlife as a supernatural Judge Dredd. Don't know if this was a retcon, but it does make the government look less bad that they tried to make it up for their mistake.

Note that his death as a mortal is not the point, but on how he became a courageous and cunning Magistrate who protects the world from supernatural terrors. He does his job very well, which just proves that the national exams selected him correctly.

The fact that he looks "ugly" is also sort of depends on how you interpret it. His face is considered frightening, which might be more because of how fierce he looks and not revulsion. And that he frightens the monsters the same way Batman frightens criminals. So the idea of drawing his face as a ward against monsters came up in the lore.

Got an interesting theory about zhong kui and no wukong.
English isn't very idiomatic since it is written by a Chinese person :

"One day this year, Feng Ji's first words to Yang Qi were, "Holiday is almost over, and I haven't done any of my summer homework. It's due on August 20th, what should I do?" Yang Qi: "Transfer schools." Feng Ji slapped his forehead and exclaimed, "Genius!" So, without even a trace of summer homework, he completed the transfer procedures in a 1 minute 56 second video, and was successfully approved"

Those motherlovers might just not have work enough to show anything about wukong dlc ! SO they say we wokr on something else, but it is too early to show... That is lazy Chinese student 101.
Still this is weird since last year there already was videos of wukong and a princess riding atop a lake on bai long ma, pics of the underwater palace of the eastern dragon (i think), and a few other things...

Anyway with Yang qi post on weibo crying like a western dev that he did not feel happy enough after releasing wukong and want to do something else, im really starting to think they are going to pull a resident evil 3 on us and blow up the 3 chapters they said they were doing, to make them actually 6 and just repackage wukong dlc into wukong 2, which mean we would have to wait years to get it.

I don't really care tho, i'll just replay wukong for the nth time.
