New, interesting Japanese non-pop, non-J-rock music?

I can't tell if Shiina Ringo is or is not retired.

But Shiina Ringo.

Edit: I fucking hate how needlessly rigid japanese record labels have gotten when it comes to putting stuff up for consumption. Makes buying albums next to impossible.

Didn't she release like two albums last year?

And yeah, I know what you mean. OOIOO and Jesse Ruins both released new albums last year and I had no way to listen to them short of importing the CD for the longest time. Fortunately they're both up on Spotify now.

Yup, after announcing the disbanding of her group and her personal retirement, neither of which seemed to have actually happened.

But she's awesome so who cares.

I've been trying to get a version of YMCK's Family Cooking that isn't literally riddled with DRM for months. Physical copies are 35 dollars.

Does japanese metal count? Galneryus is very good and still putting out albums, but they've been around for a while

Crossfaith too. Their style is pretty much their own (blending metalcore with dubstep, trance, and house and somehow making it work without coming off as extra-cheesy like a lot of electronic-metal fusion groups do) and are a somewhat newer group internationally, but not inexperienced by any means.

Definitely not retired. Just saw her live the other week.
