I say let Randy Johnson throw the book at him. There should be a precedent set for this, because this is more than mere mischief. Even outside of the obvious potential risks of a plane crash, the pilots eyesight, and consequentially livelihood, is also at stake.

Maybe instead of charging this guy to deflect attention away from the glaring security flaws...maybe actually find a solution to the problem. I did some engineering work years ago, and we used a laser binocular to gauge distances of object which were impossible to reach on foot. The beam emitted from the device can trave quite far. I'm thinking he used something like it....

Aren't laser beams usally rather thin? That would have had to have been a hell of a thick (and powerful) laser beam to blind both pilot and co-pilot from like a mile away.

Because of the way lasers work, they can all go really far without diffracting (spreading) much. That's the difference between a normal light and a laser, from the point of view of their effect.

You only see the beam if it hits something though, so it's pretty hard to tell how far it's going.

Anyway so much for the idea that you need some kind of uberterrotechnology to make a laser hit a pilot's face in a jet. I didn't think it would be that hard. At worst you get some binoculars and you attach the laser to them.

On Friday, a helicopter carrying Port Authority detectives was hit by a beam as they surveyed the area in an attempt to pinpoint the origin of the original beams. Banach has not been charged in that incident. Assistant U.S. Attorney Chris Gramaccioni would not say why, but an FBI spokesman said it might be because the wording of the Patriot Act statute does not include helicopters as "mass transportation vehicles."
