New Mercenaries PS2 Demo

Musashi Wins!

FLAWLESS VICTOLY!
Anyone else pick this up at GameStop or the like? What great fun. It's a massive arcade style military shooter that borrows just the right parts from GTA and Socom.

The maps are gigantic and pretty much anything is destructible. Every vehicle can be driven/piloted. Basically, you earn money by completing objectives or destroying military targets. You can use said money to drop in supplies, special equipment, etc. It's a blast! There are some really nice animations with the weaponry and building collapses, etc. The AI is dumb as rocks, but it's a 1 man vs. the army game...not deadly serious, so it's no great fault.

Your ultimate objective seems to be to capture/kill the last boss of the level while doing some basic money management, haha. This game is everything Syphon Filter (the last) was attempting and more. With good controls. +1 pre-order.

I'd have to say I disagree. The game certainly is arcade like and shooting enemies is way too easy with the controls. No fine tuning at all. The graphics aren't even close to being in the same league as GTA even with the huge world. I also don't like the viewpoint you play at. The character just feels way too detatched from me, unlike both GTA and SOCOM.

It is kind of fun, but I was expecting so much more based on what I say at E3 and in the videos.

I hope this game is mad fun online because the single player left me unsatisfied. Although given the uneven and floaty controls for both the weapons and the vehicles, I don't see it being a game that's going to be fun to play online.

I do think you nailed it by comparing it to Syphon Filter as that was the game that sprung to my mind as I was playing it. That is not a compliment, though.

It's not online. But graphically it does outstrip GTA. No bland cardboard walls here, nosir! Mercenaries is great - I've played through the early version quite extensively and really enjoyed it.

Graphically, it's pretty ugly, I'm sorry.

I had extremely high hopes for this game after E3 and I thought it would be one of the top titles of 2005, but it's got a loooong way to go. Hopefully, this is a very early demo and the final version comes out much better.

BTW,

There's also an update on IGN on the game. They seem to be pretty darn happy with it.

I suspect this will be pretty represenative of the final build. But I'm sorry you didn't like it. To me...it was arcade in the sense that Syphon Filter was yet couldn't pull off and it's controls and interface were 100% kinder. I thought the graphics were fine for the environment, especially the buildings falling with smoke, etc. Those were great. But to each their own. It's not going to be online from what I hear so I'd stay far away.
