New Musaks for the GAF Crowd

So....since I'm too lazy to pull up the weekly listening thread, I decided to start a new one of a lot of the NEW stuff that I've been listening to.

Stars - Set Yourself on Fire - of course, the beloved Montreal group makes a stunning follow-up to their previous masterpiece, "Heart." So far, I'm not digging it as much as "Heart," which was very poppy and upbeat. Don't get me wrong, it's still "poppy," but in a "darker" sense. The album opener is AMAZING: "your ex-lover is dead."

Six By Seven - 04 - most of you probably have never heard of this BritPop group. They are in the vein of MBV and space-rock. Dave Friedmann produced their new album, so it's definitely more spacier than their previous albums. So far, so good.

TV on the Radio - New Health Rock EP - it's TVOTR...you either love 'em or hate 'em. I just love the guy's voice; he can do no wrong in my book.

Trail of Dead - Worlds Apart - this is probably the album that will divide hardcore Dead fans the most. It is definitely much more accessible than their previous work, songs in the vein of "Relative Ways." Probably not as strong as "Source Tags," but a rockin' effort nonetheless.

Ok...please don't hit the indie kid.

Everyone should buy this now. If you like instrumental guitar that is.

Stars is too sappy/boring for me. They're like the early Rilo Kiley. Not my thing.
I'll still check this out tho...

I've gotta check out the new Stars. How can you deny the sheer amazingness of "Elevator Love Letter?!" Fuck yeah.

Um, I've just been listening to Merzbow and old stuff? Go get Aqua Necromancer and uh, cry.

You should all check out Pidgeon, because I bet most of you haven't. THAT MEANS YOU!

Haven't listened to it yet, but it came pretty highly recommended by a friend of mine.

I prefer "The Woods" to "Romantic Comedy." ;) Have you heard Nightsongs? It's maybe a little better than Stars. More consistant at least.

That album is genius. Everyone should own a copy.
Fuck yes. I've been hooked on that and 1930. And now I need to find a copy of Tamago.

Okay, so you, White Man, and myself. Are we the only 3 noise heads?

I plan on doing some Noise shopping tomorrow. I think it's going to be Last of Analog Sessions and maybe Merzbird if anywhere has it in.

I think mentions of Merzbow have been up like 10000% over the past couple weeks. Merzbow is so mainstream now. The collaboration with Christina could happen any day now.

The only thing of Merzbow's I've heard is Maldoror, and it was horrible garbage. I listened to it because of my previous infatuation with Mike Patton.

Nice!! 1930 is my 2nd fav. Beautiful artwork too, as is the norm with Tzadik. Tauromachine and Pulse Demon are classics... Mercurated and Merzzow are also worth a listen. The mans discog is mindbloggling.

Must get more Aube and Masonna.

Tauromachine and Pulse Demon are high on my shopping list. Right behind Tamago & Last of Analogue Sessions.

The packaging for Tamago is fucking awesome...

I am unfamiliar with Mercurated and Merzzow. What 'type' of Merzbow releases are they?

Also, I think I'm definitely picking up Merzbird if I could find it. Luckily the one record store near me has a pretty decent Merzbow section. Unfortunately, half the albums don't have their titles anywhere on them (at least in english).

Only 350 copies. I'll probably never get it... it'll cost an arm and a leg to import.

I found a place that has it in stock. But it's like ~$35 US shipped... :\

Merzzow is kinda his tribute to stoner rock... really soporific and "lazy" sounding. It's from 02, so his post-analogue phase.

Mercurated is in the vein of Tauromachine. Fast and noisy. Analogue.

Heh, yup... sucks, eh?

Ah, considering how much I like Aqua Necromancer, I think I may have to pick this up, if I see it.

I'm so mad at myself. Ever since I've entered college, I've been liking music that I previously hated.. and TV on the Radio is one of those bands I would hate. Not that I dislike the music I previously dug, but still.

If you aren't listening to Midwesterncuttalistick by This Moment in Black History, you're missing out. It's fucking hot, guys.

I bought a shitload of CDs yesterday (plus another album from iTMS), but haven't had time to listen to any of them. However...I doubt any of them would appeal to you, since this board skews indie, and they are almost all electronic/dance records.

I read a review that sounded good, but can you make any comparisons with what these guys sound like? I can't find any samples.

OK...haven't listened to any of these all the way through yet, but here goes. I was buying music appropriate for a night drive to Vegas...and no, I don't normally theme my music purchases, but it worked out that way.

Aya, Strange Flower. One of Naked Music's more famous vocalists gets her own solo album, with production by Jay Denis (aka Blue Six). Typical smooth Naked Music house...and speaking of which...

Miguel Migs, 24th Street Sounds. Double CD (one mix CD, one CD of singles he's done for a non-Naked Music label) -- San Francisco house music, just add pool and hotties, etc.

Way Out West, Don't Look Now. Double CD (one CD of new songs, one mix CD by Nick Warren and Jody Westernoff, aka WOW). I'm really excited about this one since their last album, Intensify, is one of my all-time favorites.

Paris Under A Groove. Compliation of French downtempo with a touch of house and jazz.

St. Germain, Tourist. I'm really excited about this one, given how highly it was recommended in another thread.

And, finally, I've been trying to track down the Ovum Fall Sampler compilation, but so far, no luck. I'll have to try Borders on the way home.

Other stuff I've been listening to lately:

M83, Dead Cities, Red Seas, and Lost Ghosts. Awesome record that I didn't pick up until it became available domestically. In retrospect, I should have shelled out for the import. Damn.

The Avalanches, When I Met You. It's a DJ mix CD full of crazy mashups (at one point, they go from Daft Punk into Hall & Oates!) which mixes in songs from their artist album Since I Left You. Crazy fun...really like this one a lot. I suspect that this is highly rare and highly illegal, since I didn't see ANYTHING on the CD sleeve indicating that they got clearances to all the tracks they included.

Coldplay, A Rush Of Blood To The Head. For some reason, I broke this one out recently. Still a good record.

Sofa Surfers, See The Light. This album has been getting a lot of hype, and it IS on ESL Records, so I figured, why not? Unfortunately, it didn't grab me the first time I listened to it.

jinx~

good choices. esp. on the st. germain, m83, and the avalanches.

give a try to: the album leaf, bent, and any of the verve remix albums if you haven't already.

Thanks for the recommendations. I've listened to Bent's The Everlasting Blink about a million times and still love it, and their new album Ariels is coming out (or just came out) in Europe. Sadly, there is no U.S. release date that I'm aware of yet.

I have both Verve Remixed albums, and agree that they are outstanding.

Can you tell me more about The Album Leaf?

The Album Leaf - In A Safe Place

...that's their newest album, and it will most likely make my top 10 list of 2004. it's a post-rock instrumental album, but not in the vein of mogwai. a bit brighter, more optimistic than the mogwai-sound. the lead singer of sigur ros guests on one track, but i think it's one of the weaker tracks on the album. it has guitars and electronic samples and strings and whatnot. i don't really know how to describe it, but it's one of those albums you put on before you go to bed or ending the night with a nice glass of wine and some books.

definitely check it out. their seal beach EP is also excellent, but their first album (one day i'll be on time) isn't that inspiring to my ears. it's colder, more sterile. in a safe place is probably one of the "warmest" sounding electronic-based albums i've heard in a good long while. and that's saying a lot.

tell me what you think!
