Help!!

Well I put together my new PC yesterday. But it won't install windows. It formats and then stops when copying files. "Cannot copy such and such file press esc to continue F3 to quit" or whatever. So I try to continue and it gives me that same message for five more system files, but it's always the same files each time. Swap out cdrw for one from other PC same thing happens. Cleaned disc, no go. SO I put the old cdrw back in my old PC and it installed windows just fine, that rules out the drive and the disc. I am at a loss, it's just bizarre.

Everything is detected in BIOS. Cpu humming at 38c, good voltage. I highly suspect the RAM or mobo atm. *sighs*

Specs:
Asus K8V
A64 3000+
512MB Kingston valueram PC3200
Sapphire 9600XT
Sony CD-RW
Seagate Barracuda IV 40GB
Vantec Stealth 520W

Other possibilities that just occured to me:

- Cables. Make sure they're good.
- HDD. Swap HDD from known good computer into this new one, install new copy of Windows, see what happens.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I don't have time to mess with it till sunday. But I'm gonna try to be as complete as possible when I do. BTW, I was using my good HD from the PC I'm on now.

1) Use my known good IDE cables
2) move RAM into next slot and fiddle with the timings manually / try using more voltage see what happens. I hear this has helped people.
3) or skip 2 and just toss in my Kingston HyperX DDR333

Anyway, if it does this with the hyperX I guess I have to RMA the board.

I've had that problem. It was a dirty disc though. It should give you the option to ignore the file and keep on going...

I remember having a problem like that. I made a copy of the CD on my other computer, and then the copy worked fine.

Hey guys, just an update.

I slapped in my old DDR333 modules and switched to vantec IDE cables. Well, I simply let it boot off the previous windows install on the disk and let it re-enumerate and installed VIA drivers. I realise that ain't the best solution. BUT it's stable, completely. I'm scared to try to reformat especially since it's up and very fast. *laughs*

Right on the money for a 9600XT.
