New PS5 system update beta includes DualSense wireless controller pairing across multiple devices, finally

Many PS5 peripherals, including the DualSense wireless controller, are designed to support a variety of devices beyond PS5 including PC, Mac, and mobile devices. We believe enabling compatibility of our peripherals across multiple platforms creates a more flexible and seamless gaming experience.
As part of this effort, we're excited to announce that the latest PS5 system update beta will preview a new feature that allows DualSense wireless controllers and DualSense Edge wireless controllers to be paired across multiple devices simultaneously, making it easier to switch between them without needing to pair each time.
Additionally, we're also sharing new details on Power Saver for games – a new mode that enables supported PS5 games to run with lower power consumption and reduce environmental impact – which will be available at a later date.
While beta access is limited to invited participants in select countries*, we plan to release the update globally in the coming months. If you're selected to participate in the beta, you'll receive an email invitation tomorrow when it's available to download. Some features available during the beta phase may not make it into the final version or may see significant changes.
Here are the details of each features:

Pairing a DualSense wireless controller across multiple devices

Until now, pairing was required each time you connected a DualSense or DualSense Edge wireless controller to a different device such as PC, Mac, and mobile devices.
With this update, you can now register up to four devices simultaneously, and easily switch between them directly from your controller. For example, you can take your controller which you use with your PS5, then seamlessly switch connection to a PC to play PC games, or connect it to a smartphone to enjoy Remote Play from your PS5. With this enhanced flexibility, you can enjoy gaming more freely across multiple devices.

How to pair your controller to multiple devices

By pressing a combination of the PS button and one of the action buttons (triangle button/circle button/cross button/square button), you can assign a device to your desired slot.
If a USB cable is connected to your controller, disconnect it before pairing.
  1. Make sure the light bar and player indicator on your controller is off. If they're turned on, press and hold the PS button until they turn off.
  2. Press and hold one of the action buttons (triangle, circle, cross, or square) and the PS button for over 5 seconds. The light bar and player indicator flash two times.
  3. Turn on Bluetooth® on your device, and select the option to add Bluetooth® devices. Your device detects nearby Bluetooth® devices.
  4. Select your controller from the detected devices. The light bar lights up, and the player indicator's lights blink according to the slot number.

How to switch devices

Once the device is registered on your controller, you can switch between devices by pressing the PS button and the action buttons (triangle, circle, cross, or square) corresponding to a slot. You can do this when the controller is turned on or off.
  1. Turn on the device you want to connect to.
  2. Press and hold one of the action buttons and the PS button for about 3 seconds. When the light bar and player indicator blink, release both buttons. The light bar lights up, and the player indicator's lights blink according to the slot number.

On the horizon: Power Saver for Games

At SIE, we are committed to Sony's 'Road to Zero' environmental plan, launched in 2010, which includes achieving net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2040***. We are always exploring how we can contribute to these goals through our products and services.
With this update, you may notice a new option in your settings menu called Power Saver. While this feature won't be available during the beta phase, once it officially launches, supported PS5 games will scale back performance**** and will allow your PS5 to reduce its power consumption when the feature is enabled optionally by gamers. If not enabled, or if games do not support the feature, the performance will not be scaled back and power consumption will not be reduced.
We'll share more details on this new option as we get closer to launch, including supported PS5 games and estimated impact, so stay tuned!

Great update. Haven't really tried Dualsense on PC but might give it a shot now that you can switch like this. Next update should include Bluetooth support for speakers. Can't believe this is not a thing yet on PS5.

This is low key amazing lol,
Dualsense Edge on everything.
The only issue is none of the haptics work over BT.

They should release a dongle or use the new audio one for DS controllers ffs. lazy cunts.

Finally. It was annoying to pair the DualSense every time again with the Steam Deck after using it on the PS5.
I just want wireless Dualsense haptics on PC. Is that technically possible?
It is. Games have to support it, though. For instance, Star Wars Outlaws makes excellent use of the DualSense's features and works flawless on PC (at least wired).

Fantastic! Glad I held off on buying a second one just to avoid the hassle of switching, though would have been nice for battery life. Hopefully when you turn it on with the ps button it defaults to the last device you connected to.

I was expecting something similar to Xbox where it's just Xbox and Bluetooth but this is even better. I never expected 4 devices.

Will be nice for PS5 Pro, PC, and Steam Deck.

How is the DualSense on PC? I use Xbox or 8BitDo stuff but DualSense haptics on PC would be awesome. It's so immersive in games like DS2.

This method reminds of how the gamesir nova lite works across the Steam Deck, Switch and Android tablet. In that case the gamesir button glows a different colour depending on the connected device (red for switch, yellow for Deck and blue for Android). This is great as I have 2 dualsense controllers that I can use with the Steam Deck.

Oh no shit they can do that? I have two ds5's and a switch pro all paired to different stuff. Which means I no longer need this lol. But might come in handy, who knows.

"I want my games to run/look like shit in order to save power" - said no console owner, ever. It's clearly built for the portable.

The Dualsense QoL update is amazing, tho.

Speak for yourself, I do not see why I should burn more than 20-30W while running games like Blue Prince, darkest dungeon, hades, pyre, etc.

The significant other doesn't need to know what this update does

The way I handled this. I would buy something and not say anything until she noticed. Once she did, I would just say "I have had that for weeks." I wasn't lying and she would not argue because so much time had passed. Of course, I attribute this behavior to being single today.

That's cool but....this is more of a footnote in a update, so basically nothing new just the ability to not have your control unsynchronized when using it with other devices....

I still have the discontinued official DS4 dongle in my Amazon wishlist since that is the only way to be able to use the headphone jack over BT on PC iirc.

I'm still hoping they will release a DualSense Lite in the same design as DS4. Without any haptics or trigger effects.

Dualsense features only work wired. so if you have no issue playing through USB it works fine generally.
for some non-steam games you might have to use DS4Windows tho to emulate an Xbox controller

That's pretty cool. I've never paired a Dualsense to my PC but I wouldn't mind using my awesome galaxy purple one from time to time.
