New Ratchet & Jak previews @ Gamespot

These last two days have no place for Jak and Ratchet, they must stare blankly into the sea of crazy game news.

Black Video? GTA:LCS? Landstalker? Super Monkey Ball DS? Direct feed images of Sonic on LINDBERGH (aka next-gen Sonic Ps3/360). No place for this.

But I am excited for both of these. Especially Jak X, as I read in OPM that it controls like CTR now, except with damage models and shit.

Ratchet Deadlocked has my skepticism. I loved Ratchet 1, 2 and especially 3, but this direction is just... hmm.

True. And don't forget Burnout reviews, the apparent early release of We <3 Katamari...

See, we can agree sometimes. :P

I've been saying ever since Jak X was announced that as long as it feels somewhat like CTR, it has a great chance of kicking ass. I love CTR.

I picked up the Ratchet Deadlocked, Jak X and Sly 3 demos from my local Gamestop and I played through each of them several times and I must say that my anticipation for all three of them has shot up. Ratchet is a continuation of UYA as far as making it more like a shooter and less of a platformer but with Ratchet, that's not all that bad. Too bad about the boxart though. Jak X is an absolute blast to play. A whole lot of fun and as Amir0x said, it plays quite a bit like CTR. In-game voices are so bad though. I laugh and cringe at the same time. Sly 3 is great as well. Flight mission while simplistic was very fun.

What demos exactly? Is the JamPack out or are there individual demos you can just pick up at GameStop?

Depends on who is doing the voices, I guess. I actually like Chris Cox as Pecker (I dunno if he's in JAK X though), a soft spot for the voices imho. He does a lot of games, and he's really good in them.

Individual demos given out for preorders. I preordered We Love Katamari at the gamestop but the guys who work there know me pretty well so they just gave me the demos. No SotC demo though. :(

Pecker is mentioned in the demo. He is probably in the game AFAIK.

That's the thing though, I have always felt that the stable of voices they have for the Jak universe now is very strong but it's really the writing that I am complaining about. Not even the best voice actors could deliver these cheesy lines and make them sound great. It's no big problem though because the action is fast so the small quips are easy to forget. The music isn't all that great either. Butt rock really.

Circuit Races are straightforward races in which you try to be the first person across the finish line. Deathraces have you racing around a track, killing as many drones as possible within a set time limit. In turbo dash races, you'll pick up power cells that you have to charge up by using turbo, and you get points for each power cell you fire. Freeze rally is a timed race in which you can run over colored icons scattered throughout the track to "freeze" the lap timer for 2 to 10 seconds. Rush hour races are similar, except there are colored cars rushing in your direction, and each one you hit adds time to your lap.

In addition to all these track races, there are arena races that take place in large, open stages. There's deathmatch, which simply requires you to get the most kills to win. There's a sport hunt, which has you destroying creatures like huge construction robots. Whoever kills the most wins, but you also have to watch out for other players, who will steal your kills if you don't keep them in line with a few well-timed missiles or grenades. Finally, there's an artifact race, which requires you to race around the level picking up artifacts. Whoever collects the most artifacts within the set amount of time wins the match. Whether you prefer arena races or track races, there's plenty of variety in the game modes to keep you satisfied.

Screw any haters. That sounds like so much fun. That's like 8 different kinds of gameplay.

4 of them were playable in the demo. Deathmatch, Circuit Race, Deathrace type of mode and artifact race.

I know it probably didnt happen...but did Queens of the Stone Age remain in Jak X?

from the Game Informer preview:

Soundtrack duties are handled by Billy Howerdel, known for his work as the guitarist of A Perfect Circle. Sony also licensed two Queens of the Stone Age songs for the game: “You Think I Ain’t Worth a Dollar, But I Feel Like a Millionaire” and "A Song for the Dead."

Jak X plays like CTR but with damage models? Hmmm...interesting, it's diffinately heading in the right direction as CTR is held into such high regards. Is it online also?
