New Reggie interview - IGN (talks revolution)

This Mario 128 business reminds me of the rumored sequel to Mario 64. Miyamoto talked about it in interviews and everyone hoped for it on the N64 but it never saw release.
I remember Miyamoto talking about the 'garden demo' that is used as a playground to test new ideas - he mentioned back during the N64 era, a demo featuring Mario and Luigi, the player controlling both, and the two working in tandem to jump on each others shoulders and to acrobatic moves (kinda like how Mario & Luigi Superstar ended up, but only in 3d).

I'd love for Mario 128 to feature this concept of dual character control - which leads me to a theory I have about Revolution that I don't think anyone has mentioned:

One gyroscope pad for each hand. Could be possible and could be VERY cool.

This would certainly help to control both Mario & Luigi simultaneously.

Boxing games or fighting games - throwing real punches.

I haven't thought about it too much beyond this, but I think it's an interesting concept.

Didn't Nintendo (or was it Shikamaru Ninja?) say they were going to try and make Mario 128 as nostalgic as possible? If the revolution is a new away of playing games then I wonder how it will be like past old Mario games?

3, 4 & 5
I'm not too sure if these are the games they'll "feature" at the top of the show...in 2004 it was a 1ST party game (Metroid Prime 2: Echoes), a collaboration (Star Fox) and then a 3RD party game (RE4) and it'd be nice to do the same again in 2005, but I dunno. I was thinking it might be Zelda (1ST party), PokeMon XD (collaboration?) and then the new Sonic (3RD party), but I dunno about that now, so I put in Fire Emblem instead.

6, 7, 8 & 9
I think Nintendo will focus on the fact that they've successfully launched NDS & exceeded their own expectations, that MS is moving onto Xenon too soon leaving more room for GCN to sustain 2ND worldwide in consoles and of course boast about GBA sales.

10
I put redesigns and pricedrops up there...I dunno if they'll do redesigns, but who knows...since X-BOX & PS2 might go to $99 I suspect Nintendo will go to &79 or even less to drive home the value aspect of the console.

12
I think they'll go further into NDS's online features (including mobile browsing, communication, etc.) as well as non-gaming functions (Nintendo V-Pocket with media functions, downloading demo's/games thru the net or NDS kiosks and the PDA/encyclopedia thing) PLUS there's suppossed to be some kind of GCN peripheral (serial port #2) remember? I'm thinking it *might* be some kind of camera, gimmick or a wireless downloading tool to download media from cheap GCN disc's to the NDS & GBA's Nintendo V-Pocket as an "at home" kiosk or something. Either way, something that helps extend the life of GCN a bit more and makes money for Nintendo (kinda like e-Reader for GBA).

16
This...I see being a problem for Nintendo. In 2004 it seemed like alot of developers were really excited about NDS and quickly did interveiws about it's potential before it was unveiled. Who knows, NDS was put together rather quickly and then shown to game makers right before they were interviewed...they would almost have to have shown off the Revolution to them (as they did with Nitro/NDS) like *last year* for them to get excited about Revolution enough for there to be a comparable amount of video interview support from developers.

20 & 21
After showing off Revolution (with or without those "Revolutionary" features, who knows???) they'll show off Mario 128 running on Revolution...I'm guessing it'll be almost as epic as Zelda was in 2004. It'll have unique 2D/3D gameplay, gorgeous graphics assuring us the power of Revolution and it'll have odd clips keeping us guessing about whatever the revolutionary features are or (if Nintendo has revealled the controller/revolutionary features already) it'll show off those features by Mr. Miyamoto (in Mario garb) walking out playing the game in real-time with the controller being held wirelessly in his hands and him tilting/rubbing/using it in odd ways making us want to rush the stage and take it from him to play it ourselves to see what it's like. If they didn't show the controller off when they unveiled the rest of the system then having Mr. Miyamoto holding it on stage will be the ultimate tease and will make us all wonder what it's all about without revealing too much in case they wanna keep it secret.

The wildcard is the next GameBoy. Do they reveal it with Revolution or what? Who knows?

Does anyone else see the little man at the bottom of the screen? Is it a ad?

edit: nevermind it's Mizaguchi

Hmmm .... so after 10 years of getting schooled by Sony, dare I say it ... could Nintendo (gasp!) finally be getting "it"?

Mario 128 at E3, finally a Pokemon RPG for consoles, an online network albiet beginning wit the DS ... crazy.

Its funny too because in the past GDC has been almost a no show by Nintendo, this year is totally different.

Who the hell is the president of NOA now? It should be Reggie :)

(seriously, I used to remember all that crap. Main, Arakawa, Lincoln...but I have no idea who the prez is today)

Japanese guy...can't remember, probably one of Mr. Yamauchi's friends. He doesn't say much really. He is like older than Mr. Arakawa (former NOA president/Mr. Yamauchi's son-in-law) and wears glasses.

Reggie: Pokemon XD is a brand new Pokemon game for GameCube. It's a true RPG Pokemon. It's isn't a sequel to Collosseum. It's a brand new build. A brand new game that really plays off the RPG aspects. So think of it this way. If you loved Ruby and Sapphire, you're going to love Pokemon XD for GameCube.

For some reason I think this is the true comming of every pokemon fanatic's fantasy. Just look at the name, it's not Pokemon "XD", its Pokemon "OMG OMG TRUE POKEMON RPG ONLINE" face.

XD tee hee

Well it looks like Pokemon DS would almost be a lock for online play now.

Iwata's announcement could have some pretty big repurcussion's for Nintendo fans anyway when you think about the big picture.

Funny you should bring something like that up. I actually had the same idea several months ago and designed the controller to boot. It was right around the time that the "Nintendo 21" "info" was "leaked" and I liked the idea of a grip pad AND a touch pad, so I
threw them in there as well.

I'm having NO luck making this into a link [no remote linking, BAH!] so just copy-paste the URL to see it:

http://tractionjackson.20megsfree.com/images/prevalution_controller1.jpg

In my design, there's a trigger on each pad that you press to activate the gyroscope in each controller. You'd tilt the right controller around to move the camera and the left controller to move your player. (in an adventure of platform game) Then you have a little touch screen on each pad that's developer customisable, and different "grip" areas that you squeeze or twist or whatever instead of buttons.

I would LOVE something like this. You could use it for first person shooters, you could have it so that you physically swing your sword in the next Zelda game. You could pantomime gripping a steering wheel for racing games. Climbing a ladder or closing a door in Resident Evil 5.

Even if the Revolution is nothing like this at all, I hope that some day there'll be a system out there that has controllers like this. If I knew how, I'd build one myself and use it to play current games, but to have games specifically built for it would me stellar.

You pretty much nailed it.

Two separate controllers used at once for new ways to play, and the ability to attach them together to create a more traditional controller.

Imagine.

Yeah I've thought of this also, one controller for each hand (both motion sensing). Being able to attack both controllers into one would be cool too.

This would be cool, seeing as you keep hearing wireless this and that, it's pretty easy to imagine it without cords because the signal would just basically be one "cord" even though there would actually be two controller.

I hope Four Swords is one of the games that uses this new service. It was one of the best multiplayers last year on Gamecube... if FS was an animal, you could say the GBA requirements were holding it back, Normal DS wireless multiplayer would be setting it free, but online multiplayer would be like sicking it on helpless old women! FUN!

Mario 128 has an 80% chance of being a Revolution launch window title and a 20% chance of hitting GameCube. Nintendo knows the importance of having a Mario title at the launch of a system. They won't make that mistake again.

I'm extremely excited by the proactive stance Nintendo is now taking on online gaming; these comments fall directly in line with Reggie mentioning the importance of nurturing a community and how successful Microsoft executed LIVE in that area.

This interview bodes for a very promising future for Nintendo. I definitely intend to be there from day one.

Y'know... I'm really starting to hope that's where Nintendo is going with some of their ideas.

A controller in each hand, wireless, gyroscope-enabled (motion tracking/pitch/yaw), different button configurations, able to attach to each other to create a more traditional-yet still very different-controller.

That would be sweet and would satisfy the need for a traditional controller in some instances. I'm curious to hear about the technology partners Iwata is supposed to mention - we know that ATI is a lock, but will we hear about Gyration Inc? Others...?

Should be pretty enlightening.

Especailly if they could give each controller a sense of force feedback. That would be awesome.

Interesting points:

- Nintendo admits that they dropped the online ball with the GameCube. Won't happen again.

If only Nintendo execs browsed through the GAF forums, they would've seen rigorous, plausible and professional speculation on Nintendo's dangerous position (those days when Nintendo execs were saying people don't really wanna play online) in not majoring on the online capabilities of the Gamecube.
