New Sonic Mania Footage, Mirage Saloon Zone + Tails and Knuckles Gameplay

So they went ahead and reused the Desert Dazzle level concept from Sonic CD 2011 and turned it into a full blown stage. That's pretty cool. Love the WANTED posters of those obscure Sonic characters.

Had to turn off the video because I want to save some surprises for the full game. Loved what I saw though - the disintegrating loop, the water spray platform, the gun-launchers, the beak-style flippers, the bar stool spinners. So good.

Man I'll say it, I like Sandopolis. In fact, Act 2 is one of the most cleverly designed Sonic stages of all-time.

This isn't something that should be a mark of shame tbh, it's just that Sandopolis' existence in a game that has some of the high water marks of the early franchise immediately before and after it makes it hard to think about fondly. :lol

I don't have much of an issue with Act 2, length aside. I do like how the design almost kind of counts on the player panicking and making mistakes.

Act 1 is just boring as all hell, though. Even the gimmicks are kinda (No pun intended) dry.

Game is shaping up extremely well. I really love the sprite work on Knuckles' animations. I mean they are all good, but Knuckles always looked ugly in most of the 2D sprites imo. So it's the biggest improvement for me.

So happy the multiplayer is back and the new zones look great. Got to play the older build at EGX, so I know it plays to perfection, exactly like the classic Sonic games and I cannot wait to get the full game now.

This is amazing.

I wonder if any of the other new Zones are going to be based on some of the famous beta/scrapped/lost Zones of Sonic's history?
Wood Zone? Cyber City Zone?

There's some opportunities for some really awesome callbacks to beta versions of Zones we're familiar with, too.
Let's see some neon signs in Green Hill Zone, or some UFOs in Marble!

19, 65, 09, 17 all emerald quest please

You forgot that you have to press Start right after that, and then Start and A in the Main Menu. Then 04, 01, 02 and 06 and there you have it.

Looking good.

I wish the whole game was nothing but new zones though. I've played Green Hill and such more then enough times.

1, 9, 9, 2, 1, 1, 2, 4, hold A, start a stage.

Sonic 2 was the best sonic because of that debug mode code!

Hope it comes to the Switch sometime soon, but wow, what a gorgeous game - and that scanline filter is actually good! Wow!

Kind of depressing that games like Generations and Mania reference all these dead characters with cameos on posters.

Fang is a cool character and would definitely be fun to play as if he had his pop gun or other mechanics.

I'm loving what I'm seeing here and I'm an old-school, Sega Mega Drive Sonic fan (with S3&K being one of my all-time favourite games). That being said I can't believe I didn't catch onto the Streets of Rage "Pine Pot" re-imagining in Studiopolis Zone earlier. You can see there's a lot of love for that era going on here and I'm all for that.

Hurry up, March!

Sonic CD levels confirmed.

Please for the love of God, no Wacky Workbench

Please, please,PLEASE

All the classic levels are doing is taking the aesthetic, music and level gimmicks and making brand new levels out of them. Wacky Workbench can keep its amazing US music and have equally great level design to match!

Whatever CD stage they choose, I have a feeling the track will be a us/jp remix.

I'm surprised they haven't announced it for Switch yet. Surely it's coming to Switch...
I think it's just a matter of Nintendo not allowing devs to announce all their games yet. That's the only explanation for no devs coming out and announcing their games after the Switch reveal. They announced the 3D one is oming a while back, but I think that's just a matter of Nintendo giving Sega permission to announce that one game. In any case I'm positive this game will be announced for Switch at the big blowout in January.

Not true. Green Hill Zone borrows whole chunks of the original wholesale. And Chris is a Sonic CD fan.

The guy in the video is trying so hard to convince her he's a big fan of old school sonic.

"Finally getting a 2d Sonic game with the sprites and stuff... it's been awhile. Since Sonic CD"

When seeing the Bean, Bark and Nack posters:
"It's the boys! Those dudes"

Another possibility is the team not being able to handle that many versions of the game at the same time.

You mean EU/JP? The people working on this are huge fuckin' Sonic nerds so I imagine they'll do JP for one act, US for another. If we're lucky.

He already said GHZ is by far the least re-designed of the classic stages, and even THAT pivots wildly from the original layout past the half-way point. They're not going to purposefully make a crap WWZ (if they were to make a new WWZ) just because the original is the way it is.

I'm a huge CD fan too. That level is arse.

It's not a cancelled Sonic CD stage. It's a cancelled stage from Chris Whitehead's port of Sonic CD that he completely made up based on rumors that Sonic CD was planned to have a desert stage based entirely on the fact that this image has a couple of cacti in it: http://info.sonicretro.org/images/a/a5/LittlePlanet.png

My bad! I remember people talking about it back in the day and totally got the message wrong.

A fun one, tho

That'd be great lmao.

A poor video in that respect. Scanlines don't play well on YouTube and they didn't even bother uploading at 60fps. Disappointing.

Yeah I agree with that scanlines really don't work well on youtube, and I always thought that scanlines looked kind of weird at a 16:9 aspect ration too. But ah well.

Game is looking nice though, I like that they brought back the scrapped desert level from Sonic CD.

A closer look at Knuck's walk animation

Pink Bot.... nice nod to Streets of Rage...

This game is gorgeous. I could watch the sprites move all day. They're not quite at the sprite animation level of games like Third Strike or Fatal Fury: MotW, but they're close, man.

The level design looks really open. Usually, I feel like Sonic 2D levels only give you a few places where you can switch your vertical path, but these levels so far seem like you can go high or low at a bunch of different places in the level.

The music for Mirage Saloon doesn't really suit the atmosphere and theme of that stage. Sounds too jazzy and casino-like. Shouldn't it sound more... desert-y?

Fix'd. There's a reason why it's the most popular level in Sonic CD...

We just got Stardust Speedway though. I'm kinda bored of racing Metal Sonic

Well, it is a saloon

TBH Wacky Workbench's US music was so much better than the JP version
