New Sony studio Firesprite is making a ‘triple-A horror game’ in Unreal Engine 5 (VGC)

Sony‘s recently acquired Firesprite studio is working on a triple-A horror game, it’s been revealed.

As spotted by a Resetera user, a job listing on the UK-based studio’s website states that a horror game is in development, and will run on Unreal Engine 5.

“We are looking for a narrative director to join our development team for a AAA narrative driven horror-adventure game in Unreal 5,” it reads.

“The narrative director is responsible for the project storytelling, helping establish & consider the game’s universe and lore, with responsibility for the quality implementation of narrative content for project milestones and ultimately the game’s release.”

It’s not clear if the title is based on an existing Sony horror game property, such as Siren, or whether it’s a new IP.

Firesprite is already co-developing a PlayStation VR 2 spin-off of the Horizon series called Horizon Call of the Mountain, in collaboration with Guerrilla Games.

As reported in January, VGC also understands that Firesprite has taken over development of Lucid Games’ unannounced Twisted Metal reboot and poached its game director.

Matt Southern – the director of various Motorstorm games, plus the original pitcher for Drive Club – left his role as game director at Lucid in January to take on the same role at Firesprite.

Firesprite’s job listings also include numerous roles for what’s simply being referred to as a “multiplayer action” game, but the fact that one of these roles is ‘senior designer: vehicle handling’ suggests this could be the new Twisted Metal game.

It was announced last month that NBC’s streaming platform Peacock will be hosting a Twisted Metal TV series, starring Anthony Mackie from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and written by Michael Jonathan (most recently known for his work on Cobra Kai).

I had heard rumours they wanted to remake Until Dawn. I am not an insider... but I've been known to be insider.

I hope it's a game like that but Until Dawn holds up still (it did last October when I last played it). Poach the writer of Until Dawn. I refuse to believe its the same writer for all the Dark Anthology games.

The Dark Pictures games just aren't as good as Until Dawn was. Though Little Hope was decent.

I think Sony's eyes were on David Cage and that went tits up when the drama came out about their studio behaviour. Then it was too late.

Idk why Sony's eyes wouldn't be on both.

They would have both been cheap buys.

Probably less than Insomniac by itself was.

Sony is just cheap af.

You kind of said it yourself. They're niche.

I think Sony was very happy with the relationship with Quantic, but more than a few things happened.

Obviously as mentioned was the studio behavior and behavior of David Gage, but the games were also hitting a ceiling in terms of returns.

Despite the much greater success of the PS4 compared to the PS3, Quantic's PS4 game that was heavily advertised wasn't a blockbuster release. It's also sitting at a 78 on metacritic. Keep that in mind:

Heavy Rain - 87 on metacritic
Beyond Two Souls - 70 on metacritic
Detroit Become Human - 78

It makes it look like the studio is coasting on the revolution that was Heavy Rain.

Not necessarily something you want to break the bank open for, especially with a problematic history.

Compare that to them buying Media Molecule who released LittleBigPlanet which scored a 95 and has a much better batting average.

I'm glad that Unreal Engine 5 games are more and more coming.

I mean, yes, but basically as soon as Unreal Engine 5 is officially launched, every Unreal project will probably be a UE5 project.

It's not a split like it was past-gen where you had to decide and commit hard to a new, unproven but promising technology system, and it's so advanced and so expensive that you need elite staffers working on bleeding-edge devices to use it. People are working in UE 4.2X right now and are expecting to roll right into the final UE5 release; some of the emerging features of UE5 are already pieced into UE4 (plus UE5 Early Access is out to experiment with as well.) Maybe somebody in development could correct me on the differences and the conditions under which you would not "upgrade" your project, but everything I've heard in tech discussions here and in a few other places have the new system as iterative & additive rather than a dividing line. Yes, there's cool revolutionary stuff like Nanite and Niagara and Lumen (I would imagine Lumen is the hard-call, where you either choose now if the game will be lit primarily by Lumen or another solution, and everything else in your graphics approach is affected by that decision,) but UE5 itself still supports all platforms that UE4 did and you're free to use traditional methods if say Nanite doesn't work out for a developer quite as expected. (Lumen has potential drawbacks to think about; I've heard nothing but praise and bliss for Nanite and it's very easy to fall back to previous methods with just a toggle on each object. Neither Nanite or Lumen work in VR currently, though so that's one choice; also Switch or Mobile versions are a factor if they were working with a multiplatform publisher.)

Basically, it's a good thing to have more of the new engine, but UE5 doesn't immediately mean "top-of-the-line". You can make Frame City Killer just as badly in UE5 as you could in UE4 or UE3...

I hope it's not another campfire story like Until Dawn. Don't get me wrong it was great game but the horror aspect felt forced a bit at times.

Who still cares about twisted metal? Why waste resources on this? I u der stand remasters of great games as people buy them but twisted metal ?

If they really make a twisted metal game Sony has to also here too do a new wipeout.

Twisted Metal is the best horror franchise.
